Where to find the First Sinner
The First Sinner is in The Slab, beyond the bottom-most Heretic door, according to the route described by Silksong.codes’ guide. Start from the Slab Bellway Bench and follow the key-and-door route shown on your map; access to the lower area is associated with the Apostate Key and Heretic Key. The exact route may depend on your progression, so use your own map rather than assuming every player reaches the door in the same sequence.
How to beat the First Sinner
The fight is about recognizing brief cues and avoiding long commitments. The attack names below are descriptive; the community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki notes that most names it uses are not canon. Its encounter details are community-sourced, not official boss documentation.
Read the needle patterns before attacking
When the First Sinner channels, needles appear in the background before launching. The wiki describes crossed diagonal needles, five vertical needles, a three-needle diagonal pattern, and paired horizontal needles with a gap in the middle. Read the pattern, move into its safe lane or gap, and use the brief preparation window for a quick hit only if you can leave before the needles launch. The wiki also reports layered patterns later in the fight; treat those pattern descriptions as community-wiki terminology.

Stay ready for charges and aerial slashes
A forward charge includes claw swings. The boss can also teleport or jump into an aerial lunge followed by two diagonal slashes. Avoid starting a long attack string while it is repositioning. Prioritize evasion, then punish after the move has passed if the boss is within safe reach.
Interrupt Bind to prevent healing
During Bind, the First Sinner channels for about two seconds and heals if the channel completes. Treat the animation as a priority opening: use a quick melee hit when close, or a ranged Silk attack if crossing the arena would expose you to danger. The wiki lists Silkspear, Silkshot, Straight Pin, and Threefold Pin as possible ranged interruptions; none is established as a universally best choice.

Change your approach when the second phase begins
The wiki says the boss feigns defeat at a health threshold, then returns with a faster pace. In this phase, Rune Rage marks parts of the arena with circles that explode one after another. Move out of marked areas and keep track of the open floor rather than chasing damage through the sequence. Attack when both the floor and the boss’s position give you room to retreat.
A practical plan for the fight
- Watch first, then choose a lane. When the needle-channel cue begins, identify the pattern’s gap or safe side before committing to an attack.
- Use short hit-and-run attacks. The boss retreats and repositions quickly, so favor brief punishes over long combos.
- Make Bind your interruption priority. Take a quick close-range hit if safe; otherwise use a ranged Silk option rather than rushing through a dangerous position.
- Use mobility to cross or evade. The wiki specifically recommends Clawline for closing distance while striking and gaining height against horizontal needle attacks. It is a suggested tool, not a required loadout.
- In phase two, protect open space. Leave the marked Rune Rage circles, follow the successive explosions, and attack only when you have a clear escape path.

What does the First Sinner drop?
The community wiki reports that defeating the First Sinner grants the Rune Rage Silk Skill. A video result uses the name “Rune Fury,” but the wiki identifies the reward as Rune Rage; check the in-game reward label rather than treating the video title as authoritative.
