Honkai: Star Rail is worth trying if you enjoy turn-based team tactics, character-building and a long-running science-fantasy story—and can live with the pacing and randomized acquisition systems of a free-to-play live-service RPG. Its combat and party synergy drew strong praise in a 2023 PC review, but that review also flagged progression pauses and resource-system complexity. The evidence here supports a qualified recommendation, not a claim that the current version is equally suited to every player or platform.
What kind of game is Honkai: Star Rail?
Honkai: Star Rail is a free-to-play, online-required space-fantasy RPG. The official US PlayStation listing describes its PS5 version as a turn-based RPG built around assembling a four-character team. It calls the combat accessible to newcomers but challenging to master. Optional in-game purchases are available, including virtual currency and a supply pass; free access does not mean the game has no paid progression-related options. PlayStation’s US listing gives the PS5 release date as October 10, 2023.
That platform distinction matters: the official product details and ratings discussed here are for the US PS5 listing. The critical review cited below is for PC, so its assessment should not be read as a review of PS5 performance or as a platform-wide technical verdict.
What did critics like about it?
Tactical turns and team synergy
In a 2023 PC review, Tyler Colp of PC Gamer scored the game 90. He praised combat that makes tactical choices feel quick and consequential, and character abilities that reward building a complementary team. The appeal is less about real-time reflexes than choosing how a party works together and when to use its abilities.

A story that changes tone
Colp also highlighted the contrast between space-opera scale and comedy, describing the game as “a tonal chameleon that switches modes so deftly that it had me cheering it on.” That tonal range may suit players who like a serialized adventure that does not stay solemn throughout. It may be less appealing if you want a consistently serious story or prefer minimal dialogue; the available review evidence does not establish a preferred dialogue volume for every player.
Colp’s overall verdict was: “Despite its gacha systems, Honkai: Star Rail is an impeccable turn-based RPG with a killer visual style.” That is one critic’s published judgment, not a promise that every player will enjoy its combat or monetization.

What might frustrate you?
Progression can interrupt the story
The same review describes story progression roadblocks that prompt players to return to character leveling. If you prefer a story campaign that moves forward without pausing for upgrades, this structure can feel like a chore rather than a reason to refine your team. The review does not quantify how often those pauses occur in the current version.
Gacha and resource-system complexity
Colp also called out the complexity of currencies, rewards and energy systems. Character collection and resource management are part of the game’s progression, not incidental details. If randomized acquisition or tracking several kinds of in-game resources undermines your enjoyment, the free-to-play entry point may not outweigh that friction. The cited material does not establish current character drop rates, expected spending or how much a player needs to spend.

Is it free, and what does the rating say?
The US PlayStation listing marks the PS5 game as free and identifies in-game purchases as optional. It displays add-ons such as Oneiric Shards and the Express Supply Pass; these are digital purchases, and their prices and availability can change. The listing establishes a free way to access the game, not an absence of paid options.
The ESRB rates the PS5 release Teen for Fantasy Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes and Simulated Gambling. Its listing also includes Users Interact and In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). These descriptors apply to the ESRB’s PS5 entry and US ratings context. See the ESRB ratings entry for the applicable listing.

At retrieval, the PlayStation Store showed an average of 4.43 out of 5 from 42,727 ratings. PlayStation says reviews come from verified owners and are evaluated by moderators. This is a changing PlayStation Store snapshot, not a stable score for all platforms or a representative survey of every player.
Two review headlines on the listing show how reactions can hinge on player expectations: “Fun game if you don’t care for Gacha” (May 1, 2026) and “Fun Game if you understand what to do.” (April 28, 2026). They illustrate individual phrasing; they do not establish how common either opinion is.

Who should play it—and who should skip it?
- Try it if you like turn-based decisions, planning a four-person team and watching characters’ abilities complement one another.
- Try it with realistic expectations if a changing, serialized story and a mix of space-fantasy drama and comedy sound appealing, but you are unsure about progression pauses.
- Skip it or approach cautiously if you strongly dislike randomized character acquisition, resource management, online-required play or a free-to-play structure with optional purchases.
Overall, the evidence points to a strong tactical RPG whose main trade-off is not whether it costs money to start, but whether its collection and progression systems fit the way you want to play. The cited PC review used an RTX 3080 Ti, i9-12900K and 32 GB RAM; that is the reviewer’s setup, not a general performance benchmark or a guide to requirements on other platforms.
