The “big mammoth” in Horizon Forbidden West is most likely a Tremortusk. The safest general approach is to scan it, use tear-focused attacks to remove dangerous mounted weapons, then exploit the specific machine’s elemental weakness while staying mobile. The exact mission and Tremortusk variant aren’t established here, so check the machine in your own encounter rather than relying on a fixed loadout.
Start by scanning the Tremortusk
Use Aloy’s Focus to inspect the machine and identify its components and elemental vulnerabilities. Mounted weapons can keep up ranged pressure, so look for them before committing to a damage strategy. Scan again as components are removed; the parts still attached determine what threats remain.
Remove dangerous components before dealing general damage
Tear-focused weapons are useful for detaching components. Side-mounted weapons and the tusks are practical targets to consider: removing mounted weapons can reduce ranged pressure, while targeting parts gives you a more deliberate opening than simply firing at the machine’s body.
There is a trade-off: spending attacks on components may reduce threats, while direct damage prioritizes ending the fight sooner. Choose based on the pressure you are facing. If mounted attacks are making it hard to move or aim, prioritize those weapons; if you already have a safe opening, direct damage may make more sense.

Choose an element for this variant
One guide recommends building the brittle state with Frost, then following up with higher-impact attacks. That is a suggested approach, not a universal rule: Tremortusk variants can differ. In particular, a surfaced guide identifies Apex Tremortusks as weak to Shock and strong against Purgewater and Plasma. Check the weaknesses shown by your Focus and use the status effect that fits the machine in front of you.
Applying an elemental status takes time that could be spent on immediate impact damage. Use the status approach when you can create room to build it; if the machine is already exposed or you have a clear opening, capitalize on that instead.

Stay out of the charge and tusk-sweep range
Keep space between Aloy and the Tremortusk, and dodge sideways when it charges or sweeps with its tusks rather than standing directly in its path. Terrain can help break line of sight when you need a moment to reposition or aim. Keep moving and reassess after each attack; a stationary firing position is risky against a machine with close-range attacks and mounted weapons.

- Ranged pressure is the problem: use tear damage on mounted weapons first.
- You can safely target components: inspect the Focus and choose parts that reduce threats or open a useful attack opportunity.
- You have room to build a status effect: check the variant’s weaknesses before choosing Frost, Shock, or another element.
- The machine is closing in: prioritize lateral dodges and terrain over holding your aim.
These are general tactics, not a guaranteed recipe for every build or difficulty. No single weapon, difficulty setting, or encounter-specific sequence is established for the title’s “big mammoth” fight.
