Gunnar Turnquist’s clamshell portable shows how compact a real Nintendo 64 can become when its original motherboard is trimmed and the PIF chip is relocated. It plays original N64 cartridges through a rear slot and integrates USB-C power delivery, battery charging, and digital audio. It is a demanding custom project—not a Nintendo product—and, despite its small footprint, Hackaday says it is still too chunky for a pocket.
What makes this portable N64 different?
The build is based on original N64 hardware rather than emulation. Its central engineering move is to physically reduce the motherboard and relocate the console’s Peripheral Interface (PIF) chip. Because the PIF sat near the board’s outer edge, moving it gave Turnquist room to trim the board smaller, according to Tom Nardi’s March 27, 2020 Hackaday feature.
The original cartridge format remains part of the design: a slot at the back accepts N64 games. Hackaday describes the unit as only a little larger than its cartridges, but also cautions that the completed portable is too bulky for a pocket. “Ultimate” is the article’s headline judgment, not a measured ranking against every N64 portable.
How the featured build handles power and audio
A custom PCB integrates USB-C power delivery and charging for the build’s 4250 mAh battery, and carries digital audio over I2S. That capacity is a specification reported for Turnquist’s 2020 project; it does not establish runtime. The feature does not provide a complete-device weight or exact dimensions, so the build’s portability is best understood from its relative size and the stated pocketability caveat.

How other N64 portable builds differ
Portable N64s are individual engineering projects, not one standardized design. Screen choice, cartridge orientation, battery arrangement, enclosure, board revision, and wiring all affect the result. A separate BitBuilt worklog illustrates one alternative configuration; its parts and specifications should not be attributed to Turnquist’s build.
| Design detail | Turnquist’s Hackaday build | Separate BitBuilt worklog |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware and cartridges | Trimmed original N64 motherboard; original cartridges load through a rear slot (Hackaday, 2020). | Original controller hardware and a 90-degree cartridge slot are reported by the maker (BitBuilt, 2021). |
| Screen | Specific screen size and resolution not stated in the Hackaday feature. | 4-inch, 320×240 S-video screen, as specified in the 2021 worklog. |
| Battery | 4250 mAh battery, as reported by Hackaday in 2020; runtime not stated. | Two 2500 mAh lithium-ion cells, as specified in the 2021 worklog; runtime not stated. |
| Other reported choices | Custom PCB for USB-C power delivery, charging, and I2S digital audio. | Advanced board trimming, a memory expansion swap, a custom PIF PCB, and a 3D-printed case, according to the maker. |
The BitBuilt figures describe that maker’s worklog, not a standard portable-N64 recipe or a head-to-head performance comparison. Neither source establishes comparative runtime, weight, price, or measured performance.

What to know before attempting a build
Trimming an original motherboard is irreversible: a bad cut or soldering mistake can destroy the donor console. Downing’s 5th GeN64 portable kit manual is useful for understanding the general scale of the work, but it documents its own kit—not Turnquist’s design. Its sequence covers board preparation and trimming, solder work, cartridge-slot relocation, power and signal wiring, and assembly.
Test the donor before cutting
The Downing’s 5th GeN64 manual recommends confirming that the N64 works before trimming: check reliable power, audio and video output, and the player-one controller port. This is a practical safeguard because faults in an untested donor can be difficult to distinguish from problems introduced during a complex modification.

Plan for tools and board-specific details
The manual identifies a soldering iron, flux, desoldering braid or pump, and a rotary tool among the equipment used in its build. It labels some work moderate difficulty and includes a board-revision-specific C81 clearance issue. That warning applies to the kit design; it is not evidence that the Hackaday build has the same clearance requirement. Check the documentation for the exact design and board revision being built rather than assuming parts or instructions are interchangeable.
Specialist parts are not universal upgrades
The AkiraFlex RDRAM termination flex PCB is a community component intended as a low-profile replacement for the stock expansion-port and trimmed-jumper-pak combination used in some N64 portables. Its author designed it around a NUS-CPU-03 board and warns that other revisions may need trace and via preparation. The README also warns that leaving expansion-port pads may cause boot or in-game stability problems. Treat it as a board-specific design with compatibility caveats, not a drop-in solution for every portable.

Is this a practical way to get a portable N64?
For someone who wants original N64 hardware and cartridges in a custom handheld enclosure, Turnquist’s build is a compelling demonstration of what motherboard trimming and PIF relocation can achieve. For someone seeking an easy or pocketable gaming device, the project is a poor fit: it requires advanced modification of a working console, and the featured unit is still described as too chunky for a pocket. The published sources do not provide enough information to compare its runtime, weight, or exact size with other builds.
A first step for anyone considering a similar project is to identify a specific build guide and compatible motherboard revision, then verify the donor console before any destructive work. The 5th GeN64 manual can illustrate the preparation and skill involved, but it is not a direct recipe for recreating Turnquist’s portable.
