On an eligible, monetized YouTube channel, a 24/7 stream can earn through advertising, one-time viewer purchases in live chat, and recurring channel memberships—but each feature has separate eligibility rules, and none guarantees a particular income. Ads can run before and during a stream; Super Chats and Super Stickers appear in live chat; memberships give paying viewers recurring access to creator-defined perks. For a continuous broadcast, also plan for the replay: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
How the three revenue features differ

These are distinct mechanisms. Meeting the requirements for one does not automatically make a channel eligible for the others.
How ads work on a 24/7 live stream
When a channel is monetized and monetization is enabled for a livestream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Mid-roll ads can be automatic, scheduled, or inserted manually through Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.” YouTube’s systems decide whether a slot receives an ad; viewers who do not receive one continue watching, while viewers who receive an ad return to the stream when it ends or they skip it. An interval or enabled slot is not a guaranteed impression or revenue amount.
Choose how to manage mid-rolls

YouTube describes automatic controls that can limit ad disruption to channel members, temporarily pause mid-rolls for viewers who send gifts, Super Chats, or Stickers, and snooze mid-rolls during high engagement. Creators can also delay automatic mid-rolls for ten minutes through Live Control Room. These controls do not guarantee identical ad timing or viewing experiences for everyone.

What YouTube’s published uplift figure means
YouTube reported in January 2024 that creators who selected live automatic mid-roll ads had over 20% average uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour compared with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a forecast for an individual channel or proof of what a 24/7 stream will earn.
Horizontal and vertical stream differences
YouTube’s feature table lists live ad pre-rolls and mid-rolls for horizontal live streams, but not for the vertical live feed. It lists memberships and gifted memberships for both orientations. If your broadcast is vertical, do not assume it has the same live-ad features as a horizontal stream.
How Super Chats and Super Stickers work
Super Chats are paid messages highlighted in live chat; Super Stickers are paid animated images shown there. They are one-time fan-funding purchases, not general donation buttons that work in every player context. Because these features depend on live chat, they are unavailable when live chat or comments are turned off.

YouTube also excludes age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos from Super Chat and Super Stickers. The creator must meet YouTube’s minimum fan-funding requirements, accept the relevant commerce terms, and satisfy the feature’s channel and location criteria.

How channel memberships work during a live stream
Memberships are recurring monthly payments in exchange for channel perks. Badges and emoji are examples; creators define the perks they offer. Unlike a Super Chat or Super Sticker, a membership is ongoing and renews monthly unless cancelled or otherwise ended under YouTube’s rules. Eligible viewers can use memberships in connection with horizontal and vertical live streams, subject to YouTube’s feature and channel requirements.
A channel designated as made for kids cannot offer memberships. Memberships also have additional audience and eligible-content criteria beyond the broad fan-funding requirements.

Eligibility: YPP thresholds are only part of the check
YouTube’s current monetization table lists these channel thresholds for entry to certain fan-funding features: 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours on long-form videos in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. For Watch Page ads, the table lists 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. See YouTube’s YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility for its current thresholds.
Those figures are channel thresholds, not a complete eligibility decision. Broadly, fan-funding features require YouTube Partner Program participation, that the creator be at least 18, residence in a supported country or region, acceptance and compliance with the applicable Commerce Product Module or legacy addendum, and activation of the feature. Individual features have extra rules, and availability can vary by location, audience designation, content, account status, and stream settings. Check the channel’s Earn tab and YouTube’s current feature requirements before relying on eligibility.
Made-for-kids settings and other stream restrictions
Audience settings can change which earning tools are available. A made-for-kids designation disables memberships and Super Chat/Super Stickers, and personalized ads are also disabled. Other restrictions apply as well: for example, Super Chats and Super Stickers are unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, or private streams, on YouTube Giving fundraisers, and whenever live chat or comments are off. Check the stream’s visibility, audience designation, and chat settings before planning around these features.

Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Not reliably. YouTube says it can automatically archive a livestream if it is less than 12 hours; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. Continuous broadcasting does not guarantee a usable replay, so if preserving the full program matters, arrange and verify a local recording workflow. The archive limit is about capture: it does not mean a stream over 12 hours automatically loses monetization or must be stopped at 12 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I run mid-roll ads on a livestream?
There is no universally correct interval. Choose automatic frequency, a scheduled interval, or manual insertion based on how much control you want and how often interruptions suit your program; an ad slot does not guarantee an ad.
Do Super Chats work on a 24-hour stream?
They can work if the channel and stream meet YouTube’s requirements and live chat is available. A 24-hour duration alone is not the eligibility test.
Can viewers join memberships during a live stream?
Memberships are available for eligible channels and viewers, subject to YouTube’s location, channel, audience, and content rules.
