To clear Steam’s download cache, open Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache, then confirm and sign in again. Steam says this built-in troubleshooting step does not affect installed games. Use it for certain stuck downloads, update or installation errors, and some launch problems—not as a guaranteed way to increase download speed.
How to clear the download cache
- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Select Steam in the upper-left corner, then choose Settings. On some platforms or in some languages, this may be labelled Preferences.
- Open Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm the prompt.
- Sign in to Steam again, then retry the download, update, installation, or game launch that prompted you to clear the cache.
Steam confirms that installed games are not affected, but says you will need to log in again. Have your password and, if applicable, access to Steam Guard ready before confirming. If a download was active, check its queue and progress afterward rather than assuming it resumed exactly as before. Steam’s clear-cache instructions
If you are using Steam Deck Game Mode and cannot find the control, switch to the desktop Steam client and look under Settings → Downloads. Interface labels can vary by platform, language, and client revision.
What clearing the cache does—and does not do
Steam’s installation and update guidance describes the operation as clearing locally cached Steam configuration data so Steam can retrieve that data again from its servers. The control is specifically for the download cache; it is not a command to clear every Steam cache or remove Steam from your device. Steam’s installation and update troubleshooting guidance

- Installed games: Steam says they are not affected.
- Sign-in: You will have to log in again.
- Active downloads: Steam’s instructions do not guarantee that every queue or partial download will retain the same state, so check it after signing in.
- Other local files: Do not assume this control clears saves, game settings, browser data, or every other Steam file. Those are separate from the download-cache action.
Do not confuse this with uninstalling Steam, deleting a library or the steamapps folder, or using Steam Deck recovery options. Those are different operations, and some can remove local data or games.
When it is worth clearing the cache
Try it when the problem appears tied to Steam downloading or preparing content, especially if the same download repeatedly fails and you have not found an obvious connection or storage issue. Steam lists cache clearing among its troubleshooting steps for some download, installation, update, and launch problems. It is a targeted repair attempt, not a universal fix.

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
- A download will not start, repeatedly pauses, or gets stuck.
- Steam reports an installation or update error.
- A game will not download or install despite adequate free space and a working connection.
- Steam’s download behavior became inconsistent after a client, network, or download-region problem.
- A game occasionally will not start and stale or corrupted Steam download data may be involved.
Before clearing it, save work in other applications and avoid interrupting an important active download unless troubleshooting requires it. Steam does not recommend a routine schedule for clearing the cache; use it when there is a relevant problem rather than as regular maintenance.
When it probably will not help
Clearing cached data cannot fix every cause of a download or launch failure. It is unlikely to solve the underlying issue if the limit is elsewhere:

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Slow or unstable connection: Poor Wi-Fi, router trouble, ISP behavior, or a managed school or workplace network can disrupt downloads. Steam notes that proxies and university networks may block required ports, and that ISP shaping or time-of-day conditions can affect connectivity. Steam’s network and download-speed guidance
- Regional server trouble: A content server may be unavailable or overloaded.
- Storage limits or faults: A full drive, failing disk or SSD, or slow SD-card writes can prevent installation or constrain performance.
- Library access: Permissions or write problems in a Steam library folder may block updates.
- Installed game corruption: Missing or damaged files in one installed game call for file verification, not just download-cache clearing.
- Software or compatibility issues: Antivirus, firewall, VPN, proxy, unsupported operating systems, or hardware below the game’s requirements may be responsible.
In particular, do not treat cache clearing as a broadband speed boost. Steam says that on Steam Deck, observed download speed can be affected by CPU load, installation work, and SD-card write performance as well as the network. Steam’s download-speed guidance
What to try if the problem remains
1. Restart Steam and check basic constraints
Fully exit Steam and reopen it; if needed, restart the computer or Steam Deck. Check available drive space, whether Steam is online, and whether the problem affects one game or every download. If security software, a VPN, proxy, or managed network could be involved, check its settings or test on a different connection where practical.

2. Test a different download region
In Steam → Settings → Downloads, find Download Region and select the closest region. If it is already selected, test the next-closest region, then retry the download. Steam recommends this when a content server may be unavailable or overloaded. Steam’s download-region guidance
3. Repair the library folder for write or permission errors
If Steam can see a game but cannot write to or update its library, open Steam → Settings → Storage, select the … menu beside the relevant library, then choose Repair Folder. This is separate from clearing the download cache. Older guides may show a former Downloads-based library path; labels can differ across client versions. If every Steam download is affected, check your connection, firewall rules, storage health, and Steam service status; try a wired connection if possible.
