Astro Bot uses the PS5 DualSense’s haptic feedback, built-in speaker, adaptive triggers and motion controls to make actions feel more tactile. Sony and developer Team Asobi describe those features as part of the game’s design, with examples ranging from sensing different surfaces to feeling the thrust of a character’s booster.

What the DualSense adds to Astro Bot

Sony’s official Astro Bot page says the DualSense’s haptic feedback and built-in speaker help make Astro’s universe feel alive. It also describes adaptive triggers as conveying the force of power-ups and the tension of tools. These features give the controller a role beyond standard vibration: the game can use touch, sound and trigger resistance to reinforce what Astro is doing.

Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet said in the May 30, 2024 PlayStation Blog announcement that the new abilities were designed to take full advantage of haptics and adaptive triggers. His examples explain how that intent plays out in specific moments.

Surface textures and movement

Doucet said the game expands the textures players can feel through haptics, so movement across different surfaces can have distinct tactile feedback. The controller’s vibrations are intended to complement what appears onscreen rather than simply repeat one generic rumble.

Playstation 5 DualSense Wireless Controller - White (Renewed)
  • Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
  • Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
  • Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
  • DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

Barkster’s booster

When Astro uses Barkster, the bulldog booster, Doucet describes its thrust as rattling against the player’s finger in sync with the animation. The example combines a game action with a physical sensation transmitted through the controller.

The Dual Speeder

The Dual Speeder combines motion control with adaptive triggers and haptics. In Doucet’s description, steering and trigger resistance contribute to the feel of piloting it, rather than relying on motion input alone.

Which Astro Bot details are current?

Sony lists Astro Bot as a PS5 game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with a release date of September 6, 2024. Its current game page describes more than 50 planets and more than 150 PlayStation heroes. Those figures differ from the May 2024 launch announcement, which described six galaxies and over 80 levels. They count different things and come from different publication contexts; the earlier level and galaxy figures should not be treated as replacements for the current page’s planet and character counts.

Can you turn off the controller effects?

Yes. Sony lists options to play without controller vibration and without adaptive trigger effects. It also lists play without touch controls and adjustable stick inversion. These options let players reduce or avoid particular inputs and tactile effects; the page does not establish that every option is a separate in-game toggle, so check the game’s settings and PS5 system settings for the controls available on your setup.

Does Astro Bot require a new DualSense controller?

Astro Bot is a PS5 game, and its official feature description is specifically about the DualSense controller. That makes a compatible DualSense relevant to experiencing the features described here, but it does not mean every player needs to buy an additional controller. If you already have a controller for your PS5, check that setup before considering another purchase.

What the official descriptions do—and do not—establish

Sony and Team Asobi explain how the game is designed to use controller features, but those descriptions are not independent testing or a measured assessment of haptic quality. The evidence here supports the concrete examples above, not a claim that every player will experience the effects the same way or prefer them enabled.
