China’s viral “cat and mouse” game turns hide-and-seek into a live location-sharing chase: players gather in a bounded public area, share their positions on a map app, and try to evade or catch one another. In the format described by MIT Technology Review in 2023, hiders get a head start, seekers use the shared map to track them, and anyone caught joins the seeking team.
How a round of digital hide-and-seek works
The game is a real-world activity, not a video game played on a screen. Players meet at a public location with agreed boundaries and use group location sharing to add a digital layer to a familiar chase. The map helps seekers narrow down where hiders are, while the hiders move through the space and try not to be caught.
Roles, head start and catching
One reported ruleset starts with most players as “mice” (hiders) and a smaller group as “cats” (seekers). In the version described in MIT Technology Review’s Japanese edition, 90% of participants started as mice, who had five minutes to hide before the cats began searching. When a mouse was caught, that player switched sides and joined the cats, increasing the pressure on those still hiding. These figures describe one reported format, not universal rules.
Location sharing and the play area
Games described in the 2023 coverage commonly used Alibaba’s Amap, also known as Gaode Maps, for live group location sharing. MIT Technology Review reported that Amap added features aimed at these games, including larger groups, random role assignment, customizable rules and some automated role changes. The report also described a group limit of up to 100 people at that time. These are historical details from 2023; they do not confirm what the app currently supports, and not every game necessarily uses Amap.

Organizers set the boundaries and practical rules. The area needs to be large enough for hiding and searching, but clearly defined so everyone knows where play ends. The reporting describes variation in the number of seekers, how long hiders get before the chase, and the size of the play area; there is no single standardized version.
How players and bystanders can tell the game is happening
In the Hong Kong game attended by MIT Technology Review’s reporter, about 40 strangers played in a public park on the former Kowloon Walled City site. Participants wore neon wristbands so passersby could distinguish them from people who were simply using the park. The wristbands were an identification aid in that event, not a required product or universal rule.

For an organizer, the broader lesson is to make participation legible: set a defined play area, explain the rules before starting, and give participants a visible way to recognize one another. The article documents wristbands in one event; it does not establish that any particular item is necessary.
Why the game spread
The format combines physical activity, playful competition and a reason to meet people, while the live map makes the rules easy to grasp. The 2023 report described students and young professionals taking part, including people who attended in hopes of making friends. Dramatic hiding and chasing also made the games suitable for short social-media videos.

MIT Technology Review reported that the trend emerged in February 2023, after videos of players running and hiding began circulating online. The article described weekly events around China and said early videos drew millions of views; those are historical reported claims, not independently audited current measurements. It also recounted one participant’s experience of a game with more than 140 people, which should be understood as that person’s reported largest game, not a general event size.

“Digital hide-and-seek” is a useful shorthand, but the central activity is still physical play. The phone is a coordination tool: it shares positions and helps the seeker team search. The rules and feel depend on the organizer’s choices about boundaries, team balance, head start and how often locations are shared.
