In Donkey Kong Bananza, player two does not control a second full-sized character. Player one controls Donkey Kong, while player two rides on his shoulder as Odd Rock or Pauline—depending on story progress—and uses vocal blasts to attack enemies and clear terrain. Co-op unlocks after you rescue Odd Rock.
What player two controls
The co-op roles are deliberately unequal: player one moves Donkey Kong, and player two controls the shoulder-riding companion. Nintendo’s US product listing describes Pauline using “powerful vocal blasts to clear a path and zap baddies”; Nintendo Support says the second player can control Odd Rock or Pauline according to story progress. The second player is therefore an active helper, not a second independent character exploring the level.
Nintendo Support also says player two may use Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for more precise aiming. Whether that option is useful depends on your controller setup and preference.
When co-op unlocks and how to start
You cannot start a co-op session from the beginning of the game. Nintendo Support says the option unlocks after rescuing Odd Rock. Once it is available, open the pause menu, choose Co-op Play, then select the available play method.

Ways to play together
Nintendo lists three routes. The right one depends on how many systems you have and whether you want an online session.
| Play method | Systems and connection | Game ownership and setup |
|---|---|---|
| Local co-op | One console; players share controllers. | Start from Co-op Play and choose Share Controllers. Nintendo lists one-to-two players on a single system. |
| Local GameShare | Two nearby systems; no online session is needed for local sharing. | Choose an available GameShare option from Co-op Play. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility and terms for the participating systems. |
| GameShare through GameChat | An online session using GameChat. | Nintendo’s product listing says each user needs Nintendo Switch 2 and GameChat, as well as internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership under the stated terms. Availability and terms vary by region. |
For GameShare, Nintendo Support says the host needs a Nintendo Switch 2 and the latest game update. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility and service terms before arranging a session; requirements and availability can vary.

Can Assist Mode make play easier?
Yes. Nintendo lists automatic path guidance, aim assist, reduced damage, and regenerating health in Assist Mode. The company describes it as an option for new players or people who want a more mellow experience. It changes the challenge, but Nintendo does not say it removes all difficulty, and it is not specifically described as a child-only setting.
What parents should know
Nintendo’s US listing gives the content descriptors Fantasy Violence and In-Game Purchases. Its 2025 announcement also points to Nintendo Switch 2 parental controls. Those details can help families make a decision, but they do not predict how a particular child will respond or explain the purchase flow. Review the game’s current rating information and your console’s parental-control settings for your region.

What you need—and what you don’t
The game
The game is Donkey Kong Bananza for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists both digital and physical versions; its US physical listing describes a physical game for that system. A physical copy is not required specifically for co-op, so choose the format that suits your household.
Controllers
Local single-console co-op uses shared controllers, according to Nintendo. The precise controller arrangement depends on what you own and how you want to play. Joy-Con 2 mouse controls are an option for player two’s aiming, not a stated requirement for co-op.
