College basketball has no single NCAA-wide injury-report system for regular-season games. The applicable rules depend on the competition or conference. The NCAA’s 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship pilot uses three availability labels; conference policies can use a different set. The NBA, by contrast, requires league-wide reports covering specified conditions and follows its own filing schedule. Similar labels should not be treated as equivalent without checking the policy that defines them.
There is no universal NCAA regular-season designation system
“College basketball injury designation” can refer to different rules. The NCAA’s 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship availability-report program is a pilot for those championship contests, not a rule for every NCAA game. Conference policies apply separately and vary. For example, the SEC and ACC set out their own statuses and deadlines for conference play.
So a designation is meaningful only in context: identify the season, competition, and conference before interpreting it. The NBA’s requirement, in contrast, is league-wide for NBA teams.
What the 2026 NCAA championship pilot means
For 2026 Division I men’s and women’s championship contests, teams submit public reports on ncaa.com. The NCAA’s October 30, 2025 announcement describes the program as a pilot; it does not apply to other NCAA championships during the 2025–26 season while the NCAA evaluates it. The pilot’s labels are:

Conference rules can use different labels
The 2025–26 SEC men’s basketball policy illustrates how conference rules differ from the NCAA championship pilot. It covers conference contests and asks teams to report players whose participation may be affected for any reason, not just injury.
SEC pregame-day and game-day statuses
Before game day, the SEC associates these statuses with stated chances of participation:

| SEC pregame-day status | Policy chance of participation |
|---|---|
| Out | 0% |
| Doubtful | 25% |
| Questionable | 50% |
| Probable | 75% |
These percentages are policy definitions, not observed injury rates or empirical forecasts. On game day, the SEC uses available, game-time decision, or out. A game-time decision means coaches or medical personnel need to evaluate the player during pregame warmups.
SEC deadlines and reporting scope
The ordinary initial SEC report deadline is 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET on the night before a contest; a game-day update is due no later than two hours before scheduled start. For a team that played the previous day, a special deadline applies: 11 a.m. local time or two hours before the game, whichever comes earlier.

The SEC policy includes injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, and personal matters when they may affect participation. A player who was reported but is later expected to participate must be affirmatively listed as available. Players not listed are generally treated as available unless an exemption applies. The policy allows exemptions for certain players not expected to participate or who rarely play in minimal competition, and calls for good-faith reporting without misleading status comments.
ACC as another conference example
The ACC’s 2025–26 information also uses available, probable, questionable, doubtful, and out before game day, then available, game-time decision, and out on game day. Basketball reports are due the night before and two hours before the scheduled game, with an exception for consecutive-day scheduling. These examples are not a complete list of conference rules; check the relevant conference’s policy.

How the NBA injury-report schedule differs
The NBA’s official 2025–26 injury-report page requires teams to report injuries, illnesses, other medical conditions, or rest when a player’s participation may be affected. Its schedule includes several deadlines, not just a single report before tip:
- Ordinarily: information and participation status are due by 5 p.m. local time on the day before the game.
- Second game of a back-to-back: the deadline is 1 p.m. local time on game day.
- Additional game-day report: due between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, or between 8 and 10 a.m. for games tipping off at 5 p.m. or earlier. This extra report is not required on the second night of a back-to-back.
- Updates: reports are updated continually through the day.
Those NBA deadlines are distinct from the NCAA championship pilot’s venue-local 9 p.m. previous-night filing and two-hours-before-tip update, as well as the separate conference schedules.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | College basketball | NBA |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets the rule? | NCAA championship pilot for specified 2026 Division I tournaments; separate conference policies for conference games. No single regular-season NCAA system is established by these policies. | League-wide NBA reporting requirement. |
| What can be reported? | The championship pilot reports availability. The SEC policy includes injury, illness, suspension, ineligibility, and personal matters. | Injury, illness, other medical condition, and rest when participation may be affected. |
| What labels apply? | NCAA 2026 championship pilot: available, questionable, out. SEC example: four pregame-day labels and three game-day labels. | The NBA page requires participation status, but the official page consulted here does not define each label’s meaning. |
| When are reports due? | NCAA pilot: by 9 p.m. local venue time the prior night and an update by two hours before tip. Conference deadlines vary; the SEC ordinarily uses 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET the prior night and an update by two hours before start. | Ordinarily by 5 p.m. local time the prior day, with separate back-to-back and game-day windows. |
| What is the default? | In the NCAA pilot, players are presumed available unless questionable or out. Conference rules may differ; the SEC requires an affirmative available designation in certain return-to-report situations. | Do not apply the NCAA default to NBA reports. |
Why the labels cannot be converted directly
A shared word does not prove a shared definition. The NCAA pilot’s “questionable” means up to a 75% chance of playing, while the SEC’s pregame-day “questionable” is defined as 50%. The NBA official 2025–26 page establishes reporting scope and timing but does not define each individual status label. Treat an NBA label as a starting point for checking the relevant NBA policy, not as a direct equivalent of a college designation.
Keep availability separate from the reason for a report, too. Under the SEC policy, a player can be listed for matters beyond injury; the NBA requirement explicitly includes rest and other medical conditions. A status tells readers about expected participation under that system, not necessarily the diagnosis behind it.
