Critical Role has featured guest players in campaign episodes, and its cast members sometimes miss public appearances. But official sources do not describe one universal rule for what happens when a player misses a game session. The clearest examples are specific: Campaign 2, Episode 26 featured guest Ashly Burch, while the announced 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel went ahead without Sam Riegel.
What is established about absences—and what is not?
Critical Role describes itself as an improvisational, longform tabletop role-playing show guided by a Game Master. Its original founding cast includes Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Laura Bailey. The official show overview identifies that cast, but does not set out a general attendance policy.
Official examples show that guests can appear in campaign episodes and that cast members may be absent from public events. They do not establish how an absent character is handled during a missed game session. The available official listings do not say whether such a character is written out, controlled by the Game Master, or played by someone else.
How have guest players appeared in campaigns?
One clear example is Campaign 2, Episode 26, whose official listing identifies Ashly Burch as a guest. The episode description also says the party wakes to find members missing. That is a detail of this episode’s story, not evidence of a standard way the show handles a player’s real-world absence.

The listing confirms Burch’s guest appearance, but does not explain why she was invited, how long guests generally appear, or what happens to a regular player character when its player cannot attend.
What does the 2024 Comic-Con absence tell us?
Critical Role’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024 event listing announced a panel “sadly minus Sam Riegel” and named Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, and Travis Willingham as scheduled participants. This documents an announced public appearance without Riegel; it does not explain the reason or describe game-session procedures.

Why campaign format matters
It is risky to treat every Critical Role campaign as if it had an identical cast arrangement. The official introduction to Campaign Four names Brennan Lee Mulligan as Game Master and says the campaign’s format would be discussed as West Marches. That campaign-specific description is not a general policy for earlier campaigns or for absences across the show.

For a specific guest appearance or episode detail, start with the relevant episode page on Critical Role’s official site. The show also provides video and podcast routes through its official FAQ, which says captions are used on broadcasts and VODs. Episode listings can confirm who was identified as a guest; they should not be treated as a complete explanation of behind-the-scenes attendance decisions.
