CS2 teams do not appear to use one public rating or universal checklist to decide who to sign. Reported examples show a layered process: define a roster need, use statistics to narrow candidates, study demos, gather staff opinions, and—when possible—try players in team settings. The final judgment is about more than individual fragging: teams also weigh role fit, communication, behavior, lineup compatibility, timing, and the cost of integrating someone new.
How the evaluation process works
Interviews with staff and players describe a practical sequence, not a standardized policy shared by every CS2 organization. Each example reflects a particular team and point in time, and the available accounts do not establish how common any one method is across the scene.
1. Define what the roster needs
A team first has to identify the job it needs a player to do. That means considering roles and responsibilities in the existing system, not simply asking who has the most impressive public numbers. Evil Geniuses Counter-Strike director of athletics Soham “valens” Chowdhury said a team must work out whether a candidate is good “in the role that we need.” GamerLegion coach Ashley “ash” Battye has also described role mismatch as a real roster issue.
2. Use statistics to narrow the longlist
Statistics can make a large pool of potential recruits more manageable. In an account of GamerLegion’s process, ash and assistant coach imd assembled a longlist, used statistics to reduce it, and then identified a smaller set of players whose demos were worth reviewing. In other words, the data helped determine whom to watch; it was not presented as an automatic signing decision.

3. Watch demos and compare staff perspectives
Demo review lets staff examine how a player makes decisions across rounds and situations, while discussion brings in perspectives beyond one analyst’s reading of the numbers. Ash described combining extensive demo viewing, other people’s opinions, meetings, and statistics as a team effort. That makes the evaluation less like sorting a leaderboard and more like building a case for how a candidate might function in the lineup.
4. Trial candidates in team conditions
Trials can reveal qualities that an individual match line cannot fully show. Valens described checking communication and attitude as well as whether a candidate performs in the required role. Player and in-game leader Nathan “NBK-” Schmitt said that playing open qualifiers with different players—even in a mix—gave the group a better sense of how those players behaved. A trial is useful because it puts a candidate in interaction with teammates, though a short or improvised stint is not the same as a full season together.

5. Judge the whole contribution
An HLTV account of Evil Geniuses’ internal EGR rating described several considerations: communication, the quantity and quality of utility, mechanical skill, and performance in moments that can dictate a game’s outcome. This is an example of one organization’s approach, not a universal formula. It illustrates why kills or a headline rating alone may not capture what a team values from a prospective teammate.
6. Decide whether a change is better than continuity
Even when a candidate looks promising, management must compare the expected benefit with the disruption of changing the lineup. G2 general manager Petar “peca” Marković said the organization considered roster changes, discussed the question with the individuals it might replace, and chose to give the team another chance. That account shows that keeping a roster can be an intentional decision tied to stability and smaller improvement goals, rather than evidence that management did not assess the players.

What teams may compare between candidates
Reported practices point to several useful comparison dimensions. They should be understood as a synthesis of examples, not a published scoring rubric: the sources do not establish standard weights or a league-wide formula.

Why a roster change can carry a performance cost
A 2022 study of CS:GO tournament data reported that individual and collective performance declined initially after team switches and then gradually recovered. That finding is a study result, not a guarantee about any particular transfer or a measured prediction for CS2. It nevertheless helps explain why teams may weigh integration time against the possible improvement a new player could bring.

A separate 2020 study, Valuing Player Actions in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, used more than 70 million in-game events to demonstrate a context-aware way to value actions through changes in a team’s win probability. That figure describes the researchers’ dataset; it does not show that CS2 teams use the method, or that it reflects the coverage of today’s scouting.

Public interviews and reporting provide concrete examples of teams using statistics, demo review, staff discussion, trials, and role-fit judgments. They do not show that every professional team follows the same process. The available sources also establish no reliable league-wide rate for these practices, no universal score weighting, and no basis for claiming that a public rating by itself determines who gets signed. The strongest conclusion is narrower: reported teams describe combining evidence about a player with judgments about how that person would function in a specific lineup.
