If a channel is monetized and monetization is enabled for the stream, pre-roll and display ads are automatically on; mid-rolls can be automatic, scheduled, or manually inserted. That does not guarantee an ad at every opportunity, a fixed number of ads per hour, or the same ad timing for every viewer.
What a 24/7 stream needs before it can show ads
The channel must be monetized, and monetization must be enabled for the live stream. Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue for long-form or live-stream videos also require accepting YouTube’s Watch Page Monetization Module. Enabling monetization makes a stream eligible for ads; it does not ensure that an ad will be served to every viewer or that every topic will be fully monetized. YouTube’s documentation describes the standard live ad workflow. It does not describe a separate ad system just for streams that run around the clock.
Which ads can appear, and when?
Pre-roll and display ads
YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically turned on when live-stream monetization is enabled. These are separate from mid-roll breaks during a broadcast.

Mid-roll ads
Creators can choose automatic mid-rolls, set a target interval for scheduled breaks, or insert breaks manually. An ad opportunity is not a promise that an ad will appear: YouTube decides whether to fill an eligible slot using multiple factors. If no ad is shown, that viewer continues watching; if one is shown, the viewer returns to the stream when it ends or they skip it.
With automatic mid-rolls, viewers can receive ads at different times. Do not treat a scheduled interval as a universal break shared by everyone watching.

Compare the three mid-roll settings

Interruption fit matters as much as control. For content with natural pauses, automatic or scheduled breaks may fit the format; for uninterrupted material, consider whether mid-rolls make sense. YouTube’s live-ad tips give meditation videos as an example of content where mid-rolls may be inappropriate, a general content-fit caution rather than a special rule for 24/7 streams. Set up monetization and mid-rolls in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live and start or schedule the stream.
- Open Edit → Monetization and confirm monetization is on.
- Choose automatic, scheduled, or manual mid-rolls. For scheduled breaks, select the target interval: 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes.
- If using automatic mid-rolls, use Delay ads in the Live Control Room to delay mid-rolls for 10 minutes during an important moment. A countdown appears before ads resume. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while the delay is on.
- To take a temporary break, configure an away overlay and start Take a Break for 1, 3, or 5 minutes. Eligible viewers may see ads during the break; if no ad is shown, they see the away slate. The break does not end automatically when its countdown reaches zero: end it in the Live Control Room.
- After the stream, review live-stream and replay ad revenue in YouTube Analytics using the Live filter.
YouTube also names an Elgato Stream Deck plugin as an optional way to insert ads. No particular model is specified in the cited help, and a hardware control surface is not required: manual insertion is available through YouTube Studio. Check current plugin and model compatibility before buying a device for this purpose.

What viewers may see
Viewers do not necessarily experience the same ad schedule. A viewer may get no ad at a particular slot and continue watching, while another may receive an ad and return to the stream when it ends or they skip it. Mid-rolls may appear as standard full-screen ads or side-by-side ads. YouTube says side-by-side mid-rolls automatically show on eligible streams, but streams with captions turned on will not show them; neither format is guaranteed for every viewer.
There is an important exception for streams embedded on other sites: YouTube says ads are turned off when a live-stream player is embedded externally with auto-start enabled. This can matter if a channel’s 24/7 player is also embedded elsewhere.

Does automatic mid-roll advertising increase revenue?
YouTube Help reports an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for creators who turned on live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels that did not. YouTube attributes this comparison to January 2024 and an average across 207 countries. It is a group-level comparison, not a guaranteed improvement or earnings forecast for any particular channel. Why monetization may be limited or ads may not appear
- The channel or stream is not eligible or monetization is off: Check channel monetization status and the stream’s Edit → Monetization setting.
- An ad slot is not filled: YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. A viewer may continue watching without an ad.
- Content or topic limits eligibility: YouTube says age-restricted content may be ineligible for monetization, and content that does not comply with advertiser-friendly guidelines may receive limited or no ads. Advertisers may also avoid content they consider misaligned with their brand.
- Manual mode has no inserted breaks: Insert mid-roll breaks in the Live Control Room or switch to another mid-roll setting.
- External embed uses auto-start: YouTube says ads are turned off for an externally embedded live player with auto-start. The normal live experience and the embedded auto-start experience may therefore differ.
- Captions are on: Side-by-side mid-rolls will not show on streams with captions turned on. This does not establish that all other ad formats are unavailable.
