How Do I Access Save Files for Android Games?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android games do not share one universal save-file location. Progress may be synchronized through a game account or Google Play Games, stored in a visible shared-storage folder, hidden in protected private app storage, or kept entirely on the publisher’s servers. On Android 11 (API 30) and later, ordinary file pickers also restrict access to Android/data and Android/obb. Start with the game’s own sync or export feature, then use the least-invasive local method that fits where the save actually lives.

Check the game’s cloud and account options first

Before browsing folders, open the game and look for Cloud Save, Sync, Account, Export Save, Import Save, Backup, or Transfer to another device. An official transfer is safer than replacing files because it can preserve account links, encryption, and version checks.

Google Play Games Saved Games works only when the game developer implements it. It can cache saves offline and synchronize when connectivity returns, but merely seeing Google Play achievements or a sign-in button does not prove that cloud saves are enabled. See Google’s Saved Games overview and its Android implementation guidance. Guest-mode progress may not follow your account to another device.

Be careful when both local and cloud copies exist. A game may silently select one or overwrite a restored local file with a newer—or empty—cloud state. Preserve both copies before choosing a conflict option.

Identify the game’s package name

Android paths normally use a package identifier such as com.company.game, not the title shown on the home screen. Find it in Settings > Apps > [game], or inspect the game’s Google Play listing URL. With Android Debug Bridge (ADB), run:

adb shell pm list packages
adb shell pm list packages | grep -i game

In Windows PowerShell, use:

adb shell pm list packages | Select-String game

Where an Android game may store progress

These are possibilities, not guarantees. The developer chooses the location and format.

Storage type Typical location or behavior What it may contain
Shared internal storage /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/<package-name>/files/, another game-created folder, Download, or Documents Local saves, profiles, exports, settings, logs, or temporary data
Private app storage /data/user/0/<package-name>/ or /data/data/<package-name>/ Protected databases, preferences, and save data
OBB or asset storage /storage/emulated/0/Android/obb/<package-name>/ Large expansion or game-content files, usually not progress
Cloud or publisher server No usable local save may exist Account-linked progress validated online

Android’s storage model and app-specific paths vary by version and device; see the storage overview and app-specific storage guidance. OBB files are expansion data that should not be renamed or moved; they are not automatically save files (Android’s OBB documentation).

Use a file manager for visible saves

  1. Close the game completely, including from the recent-apps screen.
  2. Open the device’s file manager and select Internal storage (or the correct removable/adoptable-storage volume).
  3. Check Android/data/<package-name>/, a folder named for the game or publisher, Download, and Documents.
  4. Sort by modification date and look for plausible names such as save, savedata, profile, progress, slot, userdata, or player. Extensions such as .sav, .dat, .json, .xml, and .db are clues only; games may encrypt, compress, rename, or split data.
  5. Copy the suspected file or folder to a separate backup location or computer. Copy rather than move.
  6. Verify the backup before replacing anything. Keep the original filename, capitalization, and directory structure unless the game specifies otherwise.
  7. Launch the game and confirm the result.

On Android 11 and newer, the system document picker generally cannot grant ordinary access to Android/data or Android/obb. Manufacturer file managers may behave differently, but no single menu path works on every device. Android’s restrictions are documented at Android Developers.

Back up accessible files with ADB

ADB is a free command-line tool in Android SDK Platform-Tools. You need a computer, a USB cable (or supported wireless debugging), an unlocked phone, and Developer options > USB debugging enabled.

Connect and inspect folders

adb devices
adb shell ls -la /sdcard/Android/data/
adb shell ls -la /sdcard/Android/data/<package-name>/
adb shell ls -la /sdcard/Android/data/<package-name>/files/

If the device shows as unauthorized, unlock it and accept the authorization prompt. /sdcard commonly aliases the user-visible shared-storage area, but behavior can differ by device.

Copy a save to the computer

adb pull /sdcard/Android/data/<package-name>/files/ ./game-save-backup/
adb pull /sdcard/Download/game-save.dat ./game-save-backup/

Restore a copied file

adb push ./game-save.dat /sdcard/Download/game-save.dat
adb push ./game-save.dat /sdcard/Android/data/<package-name>/files/game-save.dat

Use the second destination only when you have confirmed that it is the game’s required path. ADB’s official transfer syntax is documented at developer.android.com/tools/adb.

When ADB says “permission denied”

  • The file is in protected private app storage.
  • The Android version or manufacturer blocks that directory.
  • The game has not created the folder yet, or the package name is wrong.
  • The game is still running and holding the file.
  • Progress is remote rather than local.

ADB copies files it can access; it does not automatically bypass Android’s app sandbox.

Why Android/data is difficult to open

Scoped-storage changes introduced restrictions from Android 11/API 30 onward. Even an app granted broad MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE access is not thereby given unrestricted access to other apps’ app-specific directories. Read the platform explanation at AOSP scoped storage and the all-files access documentation. Shizuku and specialized file managers can help with some shared-storage operations on some devices, but they are not guaranteed to expose private /data files.

If the save is private app data

Normal file managers cannot generally read /data/user/0 or /data/data, and ADB access is not equivalent to root. Try these safer alternatives:

  • Use the game’s export/import or account-transfer feature.
  • Use Android’s built-in device migration during setup of the new phone.
  • Check whether the game participates in cloud sync.
  • Restore an eligible Android backup.

Android Auto Backup can include internal files and preferences for apps targeting Android 6.0/API 23 or later, but developers can exclude data or disable backup. The standard per-app file-based limit is 25 MB. Restore normally occurs during setup or an eligible reinstall; it is not usually a downloadable, browsable save archive. Details are in the Auto Backup documentation and backup overview.

Root may expose private directories, but it carries security, update, banking-app, DRM, and data-loss risks. Treat it as a last resort, especially for competitive games whose progression is server-validated. If no supported export, backup, or account recovery exists, the publisher may be the only realistic source of recovery.

Move a local save to another Android device

  1. Install the same game, preferably the same version or a version the developer documents as compatible.
  2. Launch it once, then close it so the destination folders are created.
  3. Sign in to the same game or Google account when applicable.
  4. Back up the newly created destination folder before changing it.
  5. Use the game’s import or cloud-restore function, or copy the old file into the matching path.
  6. Preserve the exact filename, capitalization, and folder structure.
  7. If appropriate, test offline first so an empty cloud state cannot immediately replace the local restore.
  8. Verify progress, then reconnect and resolve any cloud/local conflict carefully.

Different store editions (such as Google Play, Amazon, Samsung, direct APK, or an emulator), regional builds, package names, accounts, and game versions may not accept the same save.

Editing or replacing a save file

Manual editing is unreliable. Saves can be encrypted, compressed, checksummed, signed, tied to a device or account, or rejected by a server. Modified files can cause corruption, rollback, crashes, or account penalties; multiplayer and competitive games commonly validate progression online.

  1. Make two independent copies of the untouched original.
  2. Record its filename, location, and modification date.
  3. Change one thing at a time.
  4. Keep the game closed while replacing files.
  5. Test offline when that is appropriate for the title.
  6. Restore the original immediately if progress resets or the game crashes.

Do not assume a third-party “save editor” or “save fixer” can decode a particular game.

Troubleshooting common failures

The game starts from zero

Confirm the package, game version, account, and profile slot. Check whether the game has downloaded a cloud state over the local file, and verify that you copied the actual save rather than cache or assets.

The write speed is lower and varies: the capacity, the usage conditions, the file size, the number of files in the folder will affect the transfer speed. Generally about 2.5m for 10GB single file, which means the average write speed is about 54-83MB/s in good condition
  • USB-C USB-A Dual Head: With USB-C and USB-A connectors, this flash drive work with almost any USB device. Easily transfer files between your phone, computer, and other devices via usb flash drive
  • Thick Alloy Shell: Robust zinc alloy flash drive provides excellent heat dissipation, ensuring stable operation for extended use. Performance remains solid even when flash drive 92% loaded

The folder or file is invisible

It may be under private storage, restricted Android/data, another storage volume, or a server account. Try the game’s export option, device migration, or ADB for an accessible path.

The restored file is overwritten

Close the game before copying, preserve the original, and test with network access disabled when suitable. Recheck cloud-account selection before reconnecting.

The save is corrupted

Restore an untouched backup made before editing. Do not repeatedly rewrite the damaged file; contact the publisher if account recovery is available.

Safety checklist

  • Back up before uninstalling; uninstalling can remove private app data.
  • Keep two copies in different locations.
  • Never delete or rename OBB assets while troubleshooting a save.
  • Do not share files that may contain account tokens or personal data.
  • Do not assume a large file is progress; caches, logs, thumbnails, and downloadable assets can be regenerated.
  • For online-only games, use the publisher account rather than searching for a nonexistent local save.

The Bottom Line

The safest path is: use the game’s account or export feature, then check visible shared storage, use ADB for files it can access, and consider root only when private app data is the only remaining copy. Android has no universal save location, and copying a folder is never a guarantee that progress will transfer.
