Fortnite does not require a separate activation key. “Activating” an account usually means either creating an Epic Games account or completing the Epic account already associated with a console login. If you have played on a console, sign in to Epic using that same PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account first; it may already hold your Fortnite progress and purchases.
Choose the right account route

Epic advises players who have already played to complete the account tied to their platform login rather than create a separate account. That is the safest way to keep the existing progress and purchases associated with the right account. Epic Games: How to create an Epic Games account
Create and verify a new Epic Games account
- Open Epic Games’ sign-in page and choose Create your account.
- Answer whether you have played Fortnite, Fall Guys, or Rocket League accurately. If you have played, choose the platform sign-in you used rather than starting a separate account.
- Enter your date of birth, then provide an email address you can access or choose a supported sign-in method.
- Complete the requested account details.
- Enter the six-digit security code Epic sends to your email. If it does not arrive, check spam and request another code. If the email address is wrong, change it.
- Link the platform account you want to use if prompted, or finish setup without linking one now.
If Epic says your email address or sign-in method is already in use, sign in to the existing Epic account instead of creating another one. Epic recommends enabling two-factor authentication after account creation. Epic Games account creation instructions
Complete the account created when you first played on console
If you started Fortnite through a console without registering a full Epic account, Epic may have created an account through that console login. It can contain your progress and purchases even if you never chose a separate Epic email or password. Check which Epic account is linked
- Sign out of any Epic account currently open in your browser.
- On Epic’s sign-in page, select the icon for the console or platform you used to play.
- Sign in with that platform account, then check your account details or the Linked Accounts page.
The email on your console account may not match the email on the Epic account, so use the platform sign-in itself to identify the connection. Epic Games: “You haven’t signed in on this account before” error
Fix common sign-in and linking errors

Check Linked Accounts to see whether the console account is connected. If it is missing, link it to the Epic account that holds your Fortnite data. If it is listed but the error continues, you may be signed in to a different Epic account. Epic Games troubleshooting for this error

“This account for [platform] is already linked to another Epic Games account”
Sign in to Epic using the platform login to find which Epic account owns the link. Do not assume the platform account’s email is the same as the Epic account’s email. Epic Games: account sign-in errors
Invalid or expired security code
Request a fresh code and enter the latest one promptly. Check your spam folder for Epic’s verification email.

You cannot access the account or your credentials fail
Use Epic’s account recovery process. Creating additional accounts can make it harder to identify which one contains your progress. Epic Games account recovery and sign-in help
Protect your progress before unlinking a console
Do not unlink a console account until you have confirmed which Epic account holds its Fortnite progress and purchases. Epic warns that after unlinking, the console can no longer access that account’s progress and purchases. The data remains on the Epic account, but launching Fortnite on the unlinked console can lead to a new, empty account being created for that console. Epic Games: unlinking a console account

If Fortnite appears to have reset, first check whether you signed in to the wrong Epic account. Epic’s account terms say players waiting for parental consent can continue playing Fortnite, Rocket League, or Fall Guys, while some content or features may remain unavailable until a parent or guardian provides consent and completes account setup.
