To fix Steam Cloud problems, first confirm the game supports Cloud, then avoid launching it while a sync error is active. Check Steam’s Cloud settings, investigate connection or software interference, and—if Steam shows a conflict—compare the local and cloud timestamps with your play history before choosing a copy. Do not delete or overwrite save files until you know which copy contains the progress you want.
How Do I Fix Steam Cloud Problems?
Steam Cloud is not a guaranteed backup of every file for every game. Developers decide whether a game uses Cloud and which files it syncs. Steam’s Store page shows a Cloud logo for games that use the feature, but that logo does not tell you exactly which saves or settings are included. Check the game developer’s information or community for those details. Steam’s Cloud FAQ
What should I do when Steam says it cannot sync files?
Pause before starting the game. A sync warning means Steam could not sync local files; the cause may be temporary or network-related, but the message alone does not identify it. Steam warns that choosing “Play Game” despite the message could create a conflict between local and cloud files and result in lost data or progress. Address the sync issue first when possible. Steam’s Cloud FAQ
How do I resolve a Steam Cloud conflict?
A conflict means the local and cloud copies differ—for example, because you played on more than one computer, or played offline and syncing was delayed. Steam cannot automatically determine which changed copy represents the progress you want to keep.

- Read the conflict prompt and note the displayed date and time for each copy.

- Choose the local or cloud copy that matches the session you want to keep. The newest timestamp is a clue, not proof that a copy contains the right progress.
- After resolving the conflict, allow Steam to finish syncing before launching the game again.
If the prompt does not give you enough information to identify the desired save, stop rather than selecting at random. Avoid deleting or replacing files that may be your only good copy. Steam’s Cloud FAQ
Where are the Steam Cloud settings?
Cloud synchronization can be disabled globally or for an individual game. Check both settings:

How can I tell if the problem is my network or another program?
Try basic connection checks and change one variable at a time so you can see whether the sync behavior changes. Steam recommends restarting local network hardware, trying a different network, and testing a direct Ethernet connection if you are using Wi-Fi. Its connectivity guidance also recommends checking server status, the router, and firewall settings. These checks can narrow down possibilities; none proves a particular cause by itself. - Check whether Steam’s services are experiencing an issue and whether other internet connections on your network are working.
- Consider whether a firewall, antivirus program, or another application that monitors or modifies disk or network activity could be interfering.
Do not make broad security changes based only on a sync error. Steam advises seeking help from a local IT specialist for advanced firewall, antivirus, or system changes. Steam’s Cloud FAQ

| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs |
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata |
| Linux | ~/.local/share/Steam/logs |

Under userdata, Steam account folders contain game folders identified by App ID. These locations are defaults; your Steam installation may use a different library or data location. If you inspect local files, do not overwrite or remove a copy until you have identified which save you need to preserve. Steam’s Cloud FAQ
What if my save is missing on a new computer?
Check the previous computer before assuming the save is gone. If a file failed to sync, the original may still be there; launching Steam on that computer may allow it to sync. Confirm Cloud is enabled and let synchronization complete before opening the game. This can help only if the old machine still has the desired file and the game’s Cloud setup includes it. Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Cloud conflicts. Steam’s Cloud FAQ

Cloud behavior depends on the game’s implementation. A game may sync only selected files, and cross-platform integration is game-dependent; do not assume that every save or setting will transfer between computers or platforms. If you are moving to a new device, check the game’s Cloud details and verify the save on the original device before relying on the new one.
