You can’t host a standard Fortnite dedicated server on your own PC or a rented VPS. Epic runs Fortnite’s game servers. You can still play privately through an eligible Battle Royale custom match or a private Creative/UEFN session, but neither gives you control of a separate server.
“Private server” can mean several different things: a server you administer, a private matchmaking lobby, a restricted island session, or a creator-only island version. Fortnite supports the latter options through Epic’s systems—not the first. Epic confirms that creators cannot host private island servers themselves.
Which kind of private Fortnite game do you want?

A private match is not a private server in the usual game-hosting sense: you do not get server files, console access, arbitrary rules, or control over the underlying infrastructure.
Option 1: Host a private Battle Royale match
Epic’s current support instructions say that the account creating the match must be active in one of Epic’s creator programs. That does not mean every player automatically has access. Program eligibility can change, so check Epic’s private-match instructions and current creator-program requirements rather than relying on old follower, spending, or Creator Code claims.

If you do not have custom-match access, ask an eligible tournament host to create the match, or use a private Creative/UEFN session for a friends-only game. Epic’s documented custom-key flow is for Battle Royale; do not assume it works in every Fortnite mode.
Host steps
- Open Fortnite and enter the lobby.
- Select Battle Royale.
- Make sure you and all participants use the same server region.
- Open the game-mode selection screen and choose Custom Key.
- Create a key and share it only with the intended players.
- Select Accept, then Play.
- Wait for participants to join, then start the match manually.
Custom keys must be 4–16 characters and cannot contain special characters. They are case-sensitive when players enter them. Keep the key out of public posts and hide it on stream; anyone who obtains it may try to join.
How participants join
- Set Fortnite to the same server region as the host.
- Select Change to open the game-mode menu.
- Choose Custom Matchmaking Key.
- Enter the host’s key exactly, including capitalization, and select Accept.
- Select Play before the host starts the match.
Players cannot join after the match has started. The limit is 100 players total. If more than 100 enter, Fortnite randomly selects 100; it does not simply admit the first 100 in order. This makes a custom match useful for a tournament or group event, but not a scalable private server.

Option 2: Play privately on a Creative or UEFN island
For a small group that wants a custom map or a place to build together, a Creative or UEFN island is usually the better fit. Have the host launch the island and invite friends through Fortnite’s party or session flow. Keep the party or session restricted if you do not want strangers to join. Exact menu labels and privacy controls can change, so follow the current in-client options rather than an old button path.
If you are developing an island, Epic’s publishing workflow includes private project versions for controlled testing. A private version is not the same as a public release, and a published island’s availability depends on its release and matchmaking settings. Share an island code only with the people you intend to invite, and check the current access settings before launching.
Private access does not move the island onto your computer. Epic’s publishing documentation describes the island release workflow, while its developer overview presents Creative and UEFN as tools for creating experiences inside Fortnite.

Option 3: Build a custom Fortnite experience
- Creative is the in-game creation route for building and configuring islands.
- UEFN is a more advanced development tool for building Fortnite experiences, with additional workflows for assets and scripting.
- Creator Portal is used to publish and manage island releases.
These tools let you make games within Fortnite, but they do not export an official Fortnite server binary for you to host. Epic remains responsible for the service on which published islands run. A creator’s computer runs the editor, authoring tools, or a client playtest—not the authoritative public Fortnite server. See Epic’s UEFN terms for the platform relationship.

No—not a legitimate, independently administered server for the standard Fortnite client. A VPS or ordinary game-server host cannot become an official Fortnite server by installing a control panel; Epic does not provide the public dedicated-server software that such a setup would require.
Be cautious of offers for “Fortnite dedicated servers,” modified server files, private Battle Royale hosting, or tools that claim to bypass custom-match eligibility. Avoid anything that asks for your Epic credentials, modified game binaries, anti-cheat bypasses, or payment for alleged server files. Epic’s Fortnite license and Developer Rules prohibit unauthorized software and related misuse.
Troubleshooting a private match or island

Best route by use case
- Private standard Battle Royale event: Use Epic custom matchmaking if the host is eligible, and plan around the 100-player cap.
- Friends on a custom map: Launch a restricted Creative or UEFN session.
- Testing an unpublished island: Use a private project version or controlled playtest workflow.
- Building a game inside Fortnite: Use Creative or UEFN and publish through Epic’s creator workflow.
- Running a persistent, modded world with administrator access: Fortnite does not provide the normal self-hosting model for that goal.
