1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you are asking, “How do I play Steam games if I don’t have a computer?” use a Steam Deck for local play without a separate desktop or laptop, or GeForce NOW to stream supported games to a phone, tablet, browser, TV, or handheld. Steam Link is not enough because it requires a host computer running Steam.
The phrase “without a computer” can mean two different things. A Steam Deck removes the need for a traditional computer but is itself a handheld PC. GeForce NOW is the closer fit when you have no computer-like gaming hardware at all.
Key takeaways
- Steam Deck runs supported Steam games locally, so you do not need a separate desktop or laptop, although the Deck is itself a handheld PC.
- GeForce NOW streams supported games from NVIDIA’s cloud to compatible phones, tablets, browsers, TVs, streaming devices, and handhelds.
- Steam Link does not replace a computer: Valve requires a host computer running Steam and the game.
- GeForce NOW requires an internet connection; NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for HD streaming up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS, and less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center for supported handheld use.
- Neither Steam Deck nor GeForce NOW automatically gives you every Steam game for free; you generally need to own the game, and the title must be supported by the chosen method.
Which option should you choose?
The right answer depends on what you mean by “no computer.” Choose a Steam Deck if you want games to run locally on a self-contained handheld and do not want to buy a traditional desktop or laptop. Choose NVIDIA GeForce NOW if you have no computer-like gaming hardware and want to use a phone, tablet, browser, TV, streaming device, or supported handheld.
| Your situation | Best option | Why | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want local play without a separate desktop or laptop | Steam Deck | Supported games run on the handheld itself. | Compatibility varies, and the Deck is itself a handheld PC. |
| You have no computer and want to use existing screens or mobile hardware | GeForce NOW | Supported games run in NVIDIA’s cloud and stream to your device. | You need a supported game, an applicable membership, compatible hardware, and a reliable internet connection. |
| You own or can access a gaming PC elsewhere | Steam Link | Remote Play sends the game from the host computer to another screen. | The host computer must be running Steam and the game. |
| You want to play Steam Deck games on a television | Steam Deck plus a dock or compatible USB-C hub | A dock can connect the Deck to a TV, controllers, Ethernet, and USB peripherals. | Docking is optional, and a dock does not replace the Deck. |
How do I play Steam games if I don’t have a computer?
If you mean that you do not own a separate desktop or laptop, buy a Steam Deck and run supported games locally. Valve describes Steam Deck as “All-in-one portable PC gaming,” and Valve says “Your entire Steam Library shows up” after you sign in. The Steam Deck is therefore a computer-free solution in the everyday sense, but not a solution for someone who wants no computer-like gaming device at all.

If you mean that you have no gaming computer or handheld and want to use hardware you already own, use GeForce NOW. GeForce NOW runs supported games on NVIDIA’s remote servers and streams the picture and sound to a compatible device. You connect a supported game store such as Steam, verify that you own the game, and launch a title that GeForce NOW supports.
What is the difference between Steam Deck and GeForce NOW?
Steam Deck executes games locally on its own hardware, while GeForce NOW executes supported games in the cloud and sends the resulting video stream over the internet. That difference determines whether you need a fast connection, how you handle compatibility, and whether you can play when you are offline.
| Decision factor | Steam Deck | GeForce NOW |

| Separate desktop or laptop required | No | No, provided you have a supported client device and connection |
| Internet dependence | Installed games can work offline when the game itself does not require an internet connection. | Required for game streaming |

Is Steam Deck a computer?
Yes. Steam Deck is a handheld gaming computer, even though it replaces the need for a separate desktop or laptop. SteamOS provides the operating environment, and Proton allows many Windows games to run through a compatibility layer. Valve uses Deck Verified classifications to communicate how individual titles are expected to perform, but compatibility is not universal.
Before buying a game specifically for Deck, open the game’s Steam page and check its compatibility information. A Deck Verified label is useful evidence that Valve expects the title to work well in the tested configuration, while other classifications may indicate that adjustments, a keyboard, a touchscreen, or manual troubleshooting could be needed. Do not assume that every game in your library will behave identically.

You still need to own or purchase the games you want to install. Valve also says that all Steam Deck models support microSD expansion and that games stored on a microSD card appear in the library. A microSD card for Steam Deck can therefore be a practical storage accessory when your installed library outgrows the built-in storage, but it is not an alternative to the Deck.

How does GeForce NOW let me play Steam games without a PC?
GeForce NOW lets you connect supported storefront accounts, including Steam, and stream eligible games that you already own. NVIDIA describes the service as allowing users to “Connect your supported game stores and subscriptions—like Steam, Epic Games, GOG, PC Game Pass, and Ubisoft Connect—and stream the titles you already own.”
According to NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW product page (2026), the service supports more than 4,500 PC games. That figure describes NVIDIA’s advertised supported catalog, not every game sold through Steam. A Steam game must be available through GeForce NOW, and some titles have additional publisher or catalog conditions.
What do I need for GeForce NOW?
For GeForce NOW, you need all of the following:
- A GeForce NOW account and an applicable membership tier.
- A supported game that you own through Steam or another supported storefront, unless the specific title is available under an applicable free or Install-to-Play arrangement.
- A compatible client device, such as a supported phone, tablet, browser, TV, streaming device, or handheld.
- A stable internet connection with low enough latency for responsive play.
- A compatible controller for many phone, tablet, television, and streaming-device setups.
According to NVIDIA’s system requirements (2026), GeForce NOW lists 15 Mbps for HD streaming up to 60 FPS and 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 FPS. NVIDIA recommends less than 80 ms of latency to an NVIDIA data center for supported handheld use. These are published service guidelines, not a guarantee of identical performance in every home: Wi-Fi congestion, distance from the data center, packet loss, and other network conditions can still affect play.

GeForce NOW does not automatically make every Steam game playable or free. You generally connect the store account where you own the game, and the game must also be supported by GeForce NOW. NVIDIA says its Install-to-Play feature applies to Steam games that publishers have opted into Steam Cloud Gaming and is available to premium members under the applicable service rules.
Check the game in NVIDIA’s catalog before relying on GeForce NOW for a particular title. A game appearing in your Steam library is not, by itself, proof that GeForce NOW supports it. Account linking, membership features, publisher participation, and supported-device requirements can change, so verify the current listing and plan conditions before paying for a game or membership specifically for cloud play.
Can I use Steam Link if I do not have a computer?
No. Steam Link is remote play, not a cloud gaming service that supplies the computer. Valve’s Steam Link requirements say that the app needs a computer running Steam, and Valve’s setup instructions require the host PC to be turned on, running Steam, and logged in.
Valve explains in its Steam Remote Play documentation that the game runs on one computer while the audio and video are captured and sent to another device; the other device sends controller or keyboard input back to the host. Steam Link can therefore be excellent when your gaming PC is in another room, but Steam Link alone cannot solve the problem of having no computer anywhere.

- You have a gaming PC at home but want to play on a television, phone, tablet, or another screen.
- You have access to a friend’s or family member’s computer and have permission to use remote play.
- You want to move play away from the desk while leaving the host computer responsible for running the game.
Do not buy a controller, Steam Link-compatible device, or television expecting the accessory to run Steam games independently. The controller supplies input, and Steam Link transports the host computer’s game; neither device replaces the host computer.
How can I play Steam games on a TV without a computer?
If you have no computer at all, use GeForce NOW on a supported smart TV, streaming device, browser, or compatible handheld, then pair a compatible controller. If you want local play, use a Steam Deck connected to the television through the official Docking Station or a compatible USB-C hub.
Valve says the Steam Deck Docking Station supports TV and external-display connections, controllers, Ethernet, and USB peripherals. The dock is optional for handheld play, and Valve also says third-party hubs and docks may be used. A dock is consequently a convenience for large-screen play, not a required purchase for every Steam Deck owner.

| TV setup | Does the game run locally? | Extra requirement | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce NOW on a supported TV or streaming device | No; the game runs in the cloud | GeForce NOW account, supported game, internet connection, and usually a controller | People with no gaming computer who already own a suitable screen |
| Steam Deck with a dock or USB-C hub | Yes; the game runs on the Deck | Steam Deck, compatible display connection, and optionally a controller | People who want local play and a handheld that can also use a TV |
| Steam Link | No; the game runs on a separate host computer | Computer running Steam and the game, plus network connectivity | People who already own a gaming PC but want to play elsewhere |
Can I play Steam games offline without a computer?
You can play supported installed games offline on a Steam Deck when the individual game does not require an internet connection, but you cannot use GeForce NOW offline because cloud streaming requires an active internet connection. Steam Link also depends on the host computer and the network path between the host and the remote device.
Offline play is therefore one of the clearest reasons to choose a Steam Deck over cloud gaming. Download and install the game before leaving reliable internet access, sign in as required by Steam, and confirm that the particular title’s own launcher, multiplayer service, or authentication does not require a connection. The exact offline behavior belongs to the game as well as the device.

Accessories can improve either solution, but accessories do not create a gaming platform by themselves.
- Bluetooth or USB controller: Useful for GeForce NOW on a phone, tablet, TV, or streaming device. NVIDIA and Valve document controller support for supported setups. Choose a controller compatible with the device you will use; a controller alone cannot run Steam games.
- Steam Deck Docking Station or compatible USB-C dock: Useful when a Steam Deck owner wants television play, external displays, Ethernet, or USB peripherals. The official dock is not mandatory for handheld use.
- microSD card: Useful for expanding Steam Deck storage. Valve says games stored on a supported microSD card appear in the Deck library. Capacity, speed, and compatibility should be checked for the specific card and current Deck setup rather than assumed from a generic listing.
Which choice is best for different budgets and setups?
Choose Steam Deck when you are willing to buy dedicated hardware and want local play, built-in controls, portability, and less dependence on internet quality. Choose GeForce NOW when you already have a compatible screen or mobile device and prefer streaming over buying a handheld. Choose Steam Link only when a separate gaming computer already exists.
GeForce NOW has a lower hardware barrier but shifts more responsibility to your internet connection, supported-device compatibility, membership tier, and game catalog. Steam Deck has a higher up-front hardware requirement but gives you a self-contained gaming computer and the possibility of offline play for suitable installed titles. Neither choice removes the need to check whether the game you want is compatible.

- OLED Display: 1200x800 resolution with deep contrasts and vibrant colors for a captivating visual experience.

For the strictest interpretation of “no computer at all,” GeForce NOW is the closest match because the gaming hardware is in NVIDIA’s cloud and your local device mainly receives the stream. For the practical interpretation of “I do not own a desktop or laptop,” Steam Deck is the more complete local solution. Valve and NVIDIA documentation support these recommendations; no independent performance testing is implied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play Steam games offline without a PC?
Yes. A Steam Deck can run supported installed Steam games locally, and suitable games may work offline when the games themselves do not require an internet connection. GeForce NOW cannot work offline because it streams games from the cloud.
Does Steam Link work without a computer?
No. Steam Link requires a separate computer running Steam and the game. Steam Link sends the host computer’s audio and video to another device, so it is useful for remote play but cannot replace a computer that does not exist.
Do I need to own Steam games to use GeForce NOW?
No. GeForce NOW does not automatically include every Steam game. You generally need to own the title through a supported storefront, and the title must also be available in GeForce NOW’s supported catalog or meet the applicable Install-to-Play conditions.
Do I need a controller to play Steam games without a computer?
A controller is usually useful for GeForce NOW on a phone, tablet, TV, or streaming device, but it is not a standalone gaming solution. The controller supplies input; the game still runs either on a Steam Deck, in the cloud, or on a separate host computer.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Use a Steam Deck if you want to play supported Steam games locally without buying a separate desktop or laptop. Use GeForce NOW if you have no computer-like gaming device and want to stream supported games to a phone, tablet, browser, TV, or handheld. Steam Link only works when a separate computer is available to host the game.
