Stop launching the game and do not accept a Steam Cloud conflict yet. First preserve any copies you can find. Then check Steam Cloud, the computer where you last played, the game’s local save folders, and your system backups. Steam can restore progress only if a usable copy still exists somewhere; Cloud is not a universal or guaranteed restore point.
Before you try to recover anything
- Exit the game without saving again. If the game is still open, do not make another save.
- If Steam is offering a Cloud conflict choice, do not click Upload, Download, or an equivalent option yet.
- Copy any save folders you find to a separate location, such as an external drive. Keep the original files untouched.
- If you still have the computer where you last played, do not open the game there until you have copied its save files.
- If Steam keeps syncing while you investigate, pause or disable Cloud for that game temporarily. Re-enable it after identifying which copy you want to keep.
Steam Cloud synchronizes files; it is not a universal versioned backup. A game’s developer determines which files are included, and syncing can make a conflicting copy replace another one. See Valve’s Steam Cloud troubleshooting guide and Steamworks Cloud documentation.
1. Check whether the game uses Steam Cloud
Open the game’s Steam store page and look for Steam Cloud support. You can also check the game’s settings in your Library: right-click the game (or select its gear icon), choose Properties, and look for the Cloud synchronization setting. Steam’s global Cloud option is in Steam > Settings > Cloud on desktop; labels can vary slightly by client version.
Support does not mean every kind of progress is synchronized. The developer selects which files Cloud handles, so a game might sync settings or statistics but keep saves only on the computer. Cloud support and cross-platform synchronization can also differ by game and operating system.

2. Try normal Cloud synchronization
If the game supports Cloud and you believe the remote copy contains your progress:
- Sign in to the same Steam account used to play the game.
- Make sure Cloud is enabled globally and for the game.
- Connect to the internet, close Steam completely, and reopen it.
- Wait for the game’s synchronization to finish before launching it.
- In the game, check every profile, character, campaign, and save slot—including autosaves and quicksaves.
If the game still starts at the beginning, do not keep playing in the hope that it will find the old save. Back up local files first, then check the old computer and manual Cloud downloads below.
3. Choose carefully if Steam shows a Cloud conflict
Do not choose based only on the labels “local” and “cloud,” or on which timestamp is newer. Compare the displayed dates and file sizes with your actual play history: which computer was used for the last successful session, and was it online afterward? Offline play can leave a newer save on a computer that has not yet synchronized.
- Before resolving the conflict, copy the local save folder somewhere safe if you can.
- Note the dates and sizes for both versions, and identify which one corresponds to the progress you want.
- Choose the matching version in Steam’s prompt.
- Wait for synchronization to complete, then launch the game and verify the save.
- Keep the other copy until the recovered progress has been tested.
Steam’s guidance treats the more recently modified version as a useful clue, not an infallible answer. A crash, blank profile, or metadata rewrite can make a file appear newer without making it the better save.

4. Download the Cloud files before changing anything
You can view files Steam has stored remotely at Steam Remote Storage. Sign in to the correct account and find the game. A game-specific address follows this pattern: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=APPID; replace APPID with that game’s Steam AppID.
Download available files and keep them outside the Steam folder. A downloaded file might have an unfamiliar name or format, and it is not necessarily ready to drop into the game’s installation directory. Find the game’s actual save location in the developer’s support material or use the search steps below. Back up the current save folder before copying anything into it.
If Cloud immediately replaces a restored local file, temporarily disable Cloud for that game, restore a copy to the correct folder, and test it. Only re-enable Cloud after confirming which version should become authoritative. Manual restoration depends on the game’s expected folder structure, filename, account, platform, and save format; do not assume renaming a file will make it work.

5. Find local saves on your computer
There is no single save folder shared by all Steam games. The locations below are useful starting points, not guarantees.

Steam Cloud’s local files
Steam commonly keeps local Cloud files under userdata:
- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata
Inside are account and game folders, typically in a structure like Steam/userdata/[SteamID]/[AppID]/. The AppID is the game’s Steam identifier; for example, Valve’s FAQ uses 570 for Dota 2. Look for a remote folder and recently modified files. remotecache.vdf may also be present, but it is not itself necessarily the save you need.
userdata is not the universal location for a game’s working save. Depending on the developer’s setup, the game may instead use Documents, AppData, Saved Games, its installation folder, macOS Application Support, or a Linux data directory.
Search the game’s ordinary save locations
- Windows: check Documents or My Documents,
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocal,%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLow,%USERPROFILE%AppDataRoaming,%USERPROFILE%Saved Games, and the game’s installation folder. - macOS: check
~/Library/Application Support/and the game’s documentation for other locations. - Linux and Steam Deck: check
~/.local/share/, the home directory, and any game-specific path documented by the developer.
Search for the game title or developer name, and inspect files with recent modification dates or familiar save extensions such as .sav and .dat. Filenames and formats vary. For an additional clue, inspect Steam’s Cloud log:

- Windows:
C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogscloud_log.txt - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt - Linux and SteamOS:
~/.local/share/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt
The log can help show which paths Steam accessed; it does not restore a save by itself. Valve lists these folders and the log in its Cloud FAQ.
6. Recover from the computer where you last played
An old computer may have the newest save even when Steam says Cloud is up to date. If it is available:
- Keep Steam from syncing while you inspect the computer, and do not launch the game.
- Find and copy the entire save folder to a separate drive or location.
- After the backup exists, reconnect to Steam. If this computer has the desired progress and the game supports Cloud, let Steam synchronize it.
- On the new computer, wait for the download to finish, then verify the save in-game.
If the game has no Cloud support, transfer a copy of the save folder to the new computer only after confirming the correct destination and any account or platform requirements with the developer.

7. If Cloud was disabled or the game does not use it
Look for local copies on the old computer and check backups that were already configured. Depending on your setup, these might include Windows File History, OneDrive version history, macOS Time Machine, a backup drive, or another system backup. Check the game for additional profiles, autosaves, backup slots, or a restore option. If you cannot identify the save format or location, ask the game’s developer; Steam Support may not know how that title stores progress.

Steam’s separate Backup Feature is primarily for game files. Do not assume that a game backup contains or can restore its save data; check the game’s save location and the backup contents separately.
8. If the save file exists but the game will not load it
Keep the original file untouched and troubleshoot a duplicate. Common causes include:
- The file is in the wrong folder, or the expected folder structure or filename changed.
- The game has opened a different profile, character, or Steam account.
- The save is from another version or platform, or is tied to a particular account or user ID.
- The game requires mods or DLC that were present when the save was made.
- The save is damaged, or Steam Cloud replaced it with another copy.
Exit the game, temporarily disable Cloud if it is replacing files, and restore the duplicate using the game’s original folder structure. Keep its filename unless the developer says otherwise. Test the game, then make a fresh in-game save and exit normally if the old progress appears. Re-enable Cloud only after confirming which copy should sync. Some saves are encrypted, account-bound, platform-specific, or corrupted; the game’s developer is the right source for format-specific repair advice.

If the save is gone from Steam Cloud, every device, local save folders, operating-system backups, and in-game backups, there may be no copy to restore. Steam Support is not a general save-data recovery service, and Valve warns that lost progress may not be recoverable. Contact the developer if you need help locating files or understanding a game-specific backup, but no support team can guarantee reconstruction of a deleted save.
Quick Recap
Prevent the next loss
- Keep Cloud enabled for games that support it, but treat it as synchronization rather than your only backup.
- Periodically copy the full save folder to a separate drive or backup service.
- Keep dated copies before major updates, mod changes, or a move to a new computer or operating system.
- Before switching devices, confirm the old computer has finished syncing and retain its local save until the new copy has been checked in-game.
- For cross-platform play, confirm that the developer supports syncing the relevant saves between Windows, macOS, Linux, or SteamOS.
