How Do I Resize a Windowed Game?

Switch a game to Windowed mode, adjust its in-game size or resolution, or drag its frame. Learn what to try when a game window will not resize.

To resize a windowed game, select Windowed in the game’s Video, Display, or Graphics settings, then use its window-size or resolution control if available. If the game has a standard resizable frame, drag a corner or border. Some games lock their window dimensions, so the available controls depend on the title.

Choose the right display mode first

Open the game’s Video, Display, or Graphics menu and select Windowed. If there is a separate window-size or resolution selector, choose the dimensions you want and apply the change. The exact menu labels and options vary by game; there is no universal path or keyboard shortcut.

Windowed, borderless windowed, and exclusive fullscreen are different modes. A regular windowed game usually has a frame you can grab. Borderless windowed removes the standard frame, and some games size that presentation to the desktop. Exclusive fullscreen takes over the display. If you want a smaller game view, regular Windowed mode with an in-game size or resolution control is usually the most direct option.

Try resizing the window with Windows

If the game displays a standard frame, move the pointer to a corner or edge until the resize cursor appears, then drag. Windows window resizing is constrained by what the application allows, including its minimum size; a game can set fixed dimensions or handle resizing poorly. Microsoft’s guidance on windowed app behavior describes resizing for Windows apps, but that does not guarantee every game supports it.

Understand window size versus resolution

Window dimensions are the rectangle the game occupies on your desktop. Rendering resolution is the pixel size at which the game draws its image. A game may link these settings or expose them separately, so lowering its resolution does not always change the outer window dimensions—and making the window larger does not necessarily increase the rendering resolution. Check whether the game’s control is specifically for window size, display resolution, or render scale.

Use Steam launch options only for supported games

Some games accept launch switches for window mode or resolution. Steam documents options such as -startwindowed, -sw, -windowed, -window, and -win for supported Valve/Source games, along with width options such as -width # and -w #. Its examples include resolutions such as 800×600, 1024×768, 1280×1024, 1920×1080, and 2560×1440; these are not a list of resolutions supported by every game. Check Steam’s video and display options documentation for the game and switches in question.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

For a compatible title, add a supported option in the game’s Steam Properties under launch options. Do not assume that a game recognizes Valve/Source switches just because it is sold on Steam. If a switch prevents the game from launching or causes problems, remove it from the launch-options field.

Optional workaround: PowerToys Grab And Move

If the game allows resizing but its narrow border is hard to grab, Microsoft PowerToys’ Grab And Move can resize a window by holding its activation modifier and dragging inside the window with the right mouse button. The tool uses the nearest edge or corner. Microsoft notes that it may not work reliably with some touchpads, and the setting Do not activate when Game Mode is on can affect its availability. This is a general window-management workaround, not guaranteed game support. See Microsoft’s Grab And Move instructions.

Why can’t I resize my game window?

  • The game is borderless: There may be no visible frame to drag. Switch to Windowed in the game’s display settings.
  • The game fixes its window size: Some titles do not let Windows resize their windows. Look for an in-game size or resolution control, or check the game’s documentation for supported options.
  • The game’s minimum size is larger than you want: Windows cannot drag the window below the minimum size the game permits.
  • You are changing the wrong resolution: A rendering-resolution or render-scale control may affect image quality without changing the desktop window rectangle.

Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games setting is not a resize control. Microsoft says it improves presentation and performance for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Details are in Microsoft’s Windows 11 windowed-game optimization guidance.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Leave fullscreen or borderless mode: Change the game’s display mode to Windowed. Alt+Enter may toggle modes in some games, but check the title’s controls rather than assuming it will work.
  2. Set a smaller in-game size: Choose a smaller window size or resolution if the game provides one, apply the change, and restart if prompted.
  3. Test the frame: If the game shows a standard border, try dragging a corner or edge. If there is no frame or resize cursor, the title may use fixed-size behavior.
  4. Check game-specific launch support: For a compatible Valve/Source game on Steam, consult the documented switches and use only options that the title supports.
  5. Try a border-grab workaround if needed: PowerToys Grab And Move may help when the game supports resizing but the border is difficult to reach; it is not reliable for every setup.
