You cannot detach an Xbox profile from its Microsoft account and move it intact to another Microsoft account. Your Xbox profile, gamertag, achievements, progress, purchases, subscriptions, and balance belong to the Microsoft account used to sign in. The right solution depends on whether you want to remove the profile from a console, change its sign-in email, create a separate account, or delete everything.
First, decide what “separate” means

“Xbox account” is usually informal shorthand for the Xbox profile attached to a Microsoft account. The Microsoft account is the underlying sign-in identity used for Xbox and other Microsoft services. The Xbox profile contains your gamertag, Gamerscore, achievements, game progress, and related ownership information.
Removing a profile from an Xbox console only removes its local sign-in. It does not unlink, transfer, or delete the Microsoft account.
Remove your account from an Xbox console
Use this option when you are selling, lending, or giving away an Xbox, or when you simply want to stop an account appearing on that device.

- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Open Account.
- Select Remove accounts.
- Choose the Microsoft account or Xbox profile.
- Select Remove.
Menu wording can vary slightly by console software version. This procedure removes the account from that Xbox only. Your gamertag, purchases, cloud data, and Microsoft account remain available elsewhere, and you can add the account back later.
Before selling or giving away the console
Removing the profile is not enough for a permanent handover. Use the Xbox Reset console process and choose the option that removes personal data. Also review saved payment methods, your Microsoft account’s device list, and recent security activity at account.microsoft.com.
Change the email address without losing your Xbox profile
If the problem is an old, inaccessible, school, work, or former shared email address, do not create a new Xbox account. Change the Microsoft account’s sign-in alias instead.

Microsoft aliases are additional sign-in addresses for the same account. They share the same password, Xbox profile, purchases, subscriptions, settings, and data. Start at Microsoft’s “How you sign in” page:

- Select Add email.
- Add a new Outlook.com address or an existing address from another provider, subject to Microsoft’s availability rules.
- Verify it if prompted.
- Select Make primary beside the new alias.
- Only remove the old alias after confirming that the new sign-in and recovery information work.
Be especially careful before removing an address ending in a Microsoft domain. Some Microsoft-domain aliases cannot be restored after removal. Changing the alias changes how you sign in; it does not create a new Microsoft account or move the Xbox profile.
Create a genuinely separate Xbox identity
For a partner, child, family member, or separate personal identity, create or use another Microsoft account:
- Create the separate Microsoft account.
- On the Xbox, open the profile menu and choose Add or switch.
- Select Add new.
- Sign in with the other Microsoft account.
- Complete the Xbox profile setup.
The accounts can be used side by side, but Microsoft does not merge them. The new profile starts independently and does not inherit the old account’s Xbox data.
What cannot move to another Microsoft account?
Microsoft says personal Microsoft accounts cannot be combined, and support cannot manually transfer the following assets between them:

See Microsoft’s current policy on combining Microsoft accounts. Creating a new account does not make it the owner of games purchased by the old account. Identify the purchasing account before abandoning or closing anything.
Delete the Xbox profile permanently
There is no separate Xbox-only deletion that preserves the rest of a Microsoft account. The destructive route is to close the entire Microsoft account, which also affects other Microsoft services and associated Xbox content.
To begin, use Microsoft’s account-closure process:

- Read the closure warnings.
- Choose a 30-day or 60-day reopening period.
- Select a reason.
- Select Mark account for closure.
During the selected period, you can generally reopen the account by signing in and completing verification. After the period ends, Microsoft says the account and its data are permanently deleted. That can include the gamertag, Gamerscore, subscriptions, purchased content, balance, and other Microsoft services. Do not use account closure to solve a console-sharing or email-address problem.

If you forgot which Microsoft account owns the gamertag
A gamertag alone is not guaranteed to identify or recover its Microsoft account. Before creating a replacement account, try to identify the original owner:
- Search old email accounts for Microsoft purchase receipts and subscription messages.
- Try email addresses previously used to create or sign in to Xbox.
- Check a Windows device already signed in under Settings > Accounts.
- Review account information on an Xbox where the profile is still signed in.
- Use Microsoft’s account-identification guidance and sign-in recovery tools.
Do not delete or abandon the old account until you know which account owns the games, subscriptions, balance, and progress you want to preserve.
Other common cases
You only want a different gamertag
A gamertag change is not an account transfer. On Xbox One, Microsoft’s documented path is Xbox button > System > Settings > Personalization > My profile > Customize profile, then select the gamertag and edit it. Current availability, eligibility, and any charge should be checked in the live Xbox interface because they can vary.
You want to remove a parent’s or partner’s account
With the owner’s permission, remove that account from the console and add your own Microsoft account. This changes local access only; it does not transfer the other person’s games, subscriptions, or ownership. Do not change another person’s recovery details or close their account to resolve a console-sharing issue.

You are changing country or region
A region change is not account separation. Microsoft warns that balances do not transfer between regions and that subscriptions, games, apps, and media may be affected. Check Microsoft’s country or region guidance first.
The account belongs to a school or workplace
This article concerns personal Microsoft accounts. Work and school accounts are administered by an organization and follow different rules. They should not be assumed to be convertible into, or mergeable with, a personal Xbox account.
The safest answer
Keep the original Microsoft account if you want to preserve the Xbox profile, purchases, progress, Gamerscore, or subscriptions. Remove it from the console for local privacy, change its alias for a new sign-in email, or add another Microsoft account for a genuinely separate user. Only close the Microsoft account when you intend to delete the wider Microsoft identity and everything associated with it.
