To fast-forward temporarily, use DeSmuME’s speed-up control for your platform. The official FAQ lists holding Tab on Windows, = on Mac, and O on Linux GTK as defaults, though hotkeys can vary by version. If DeSmuME is struggling to maintain normal speed, try frameskip gradually instead. Fast-forward and performance tuning solve different problems, and neither setting is ideal for every game.
Choose the fix for the problem you have
- You want to get through gameplay faster: Use fast-forward or increase the execution speed limit. DeSmuME still has to emulate each frame; at high speeds it may drop video or audio frames. DeSmuME’s FAQ explains the speed-up controls and their limits.
- The game is slow at normal speed: Try performance settings such as frameskip, then check smoothness and compatibility in the game you are playing. Frameskip can improve speed by displaying fewer frames, but may make animation choppy or cause problems in some games.
Use fast-forward on your platform
The keys below are defaults listed in DeSmuME’s official FAQ, not guarantees for every release or port. Check the installed build’s controls if a key does nothing or behaves differently.

| Windows | Hold Tab to disable the speed limiter. The FAQ also lists – and = to decrease or increase the multiplier, with a documented range of 0.0625× to 4×. | Open Config > Hotkey Config and look for Fast Forward, Increase Speed, and Decrease Speed. |
| Mac | Hold = for 2× speed, according to the FAQ. | The FAQ describes assigning Set Speed hotkeys and choosing a multiplier in Settings; it also refers to an Execution Speed Properties panel. |
| Linux GTK | Hold O to disable the speed limiter; the FAQ calls this command Boost. | Open Config > Edit Controls to change it. |
These controls change the speed target, not the amount of emulation work. On Windows, the manual says the framerate limiter caps operation at 60 FPS, and the FAQ identifies 1× as 60 FPS for the speed multiplier. Disabling the limiter can therefore make a game run much faster than intended if your computer can keep up. For more on the distinction between emulation speed and displayed frames, see the official FAQ and the Windows manual.
If DeSmuME is slow at normal speed
Try frameskip in small steps
Frameskip gains speed by not displaying selected frames. Start low, test during the game, and increase only if the improvement is worth the choppier picture. The Windows manual says fixed skips of 1 or 2 may help when you accept less-smooth visuals; it also warns that some dual-screen 3D or capture-heavy games may fail or behave poorly. Automatic frameskip, where available, attempts to skip frames when the emulator is slow and render all frames when it can. The Linux GTK manual describes frameskip as selecting frames not to display for a speed gain. See the Windows manual and Linux GTK+ manual; exact menu locations depend on port and version.

- The DS Lite system is a region free device, it can plays all Nintendo DS Lite games and Gameboy Advance Games
On Windows, check the dynamic recompiler
The official DeSmuME project site recommends enabling Use dynamic recompiler in Config > Emulation Settings, or launching with --cpu-mode=1. The captured guidance does not specify a version, so first confirm that the setting or command-line option exists in your installed build.
Other settings to test cautiously
An older DeSmuME FAQ suggests experimenting with OpenGL versus software rendering, sound options, scaling or resize filters, laptop power settings, and core-detection settings on older Linux or macOS builds. These are version-specific suggestions, not guaranteed current controls. Change one setting at a time and restore it if graphics, sound, or compatibility get worse. The older recommendations are in the FAQ 096. A 2024 forum discussion also cautions that frame skipping can affect sensitive games; treat that as secondary, build-specific advice rather than a universal rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no best speed setting for every game
Fast-forward is useful when you want to advance through a game; frameskip is a possible compromise when normal-speed emulation is too slow. Their results depend on the game, port, version, and the computer running DeSmuME. A higher speed target may reduce smoothness, while skipping fewer displayed frames may preserve a better picture at the cost of speed. Test in the specific game rather than assuming one multiplier or frameskip value will suit every title.
