Yes—but only if your emulator can reproduce the connection method used by your specific Pokémon game. The most faithful option is to use two compatible game instances with separate saves, trade in-game, and save normally. If the emulator cannot connect them, you can edit a backed-up save or use a trade-evolution patch instead; those alternatives do not create the same trade history.

Start with the game and connection type

Trade evolution is not one universal emulator feature. Older games may use a link cable, some Game Boy Advance titles use a Wireless Adapter, Nintendo DS games rely on local wireless, and later titles use different systems. Compatibility also varies by emulator version, device, and game. First identify the exact title, emulator and version, platform, save-file location, and whether the Pokémon needs an item or a special trade partner.

For many Game Boy Advance cases, mGBA’s feature list is a useful place to check supported connection modes; read it alongside the mGBA FAQ, which qualifies link support as partial. The required item must be attached before the trade begins. If the game requires a particular counterpart or another special condition, an ordinary trade may not trigger the evolution.

Protect the save before opening a second instance

The biggest avoidable risk is having two emulator instances write to the same save file. Make a separate backup before testing multiplayer, and never run two active instances against one .sav file. A save state is not a substitute for the game’s normal save: it can restore an older snapshot even after you have saved in-game.

1. Close the game cleanly and locate its normal save file. If the emulator keeps save states as well as a battery save, back those up separately.
2. Copy the save to an untouched backup folder. Keep that copy until the traded save has been reopened and verified.
3. Create a second working copy of the save for the other game instance. Configure separate save paths if the emulator derives save locations automatically.
4. Use compatible game versions and separate saves. The exact title, language, region, and multiplayer requirements vary by game.
5. Do not copy or replace save files while an emulator instance is still open. Rename a save only if the target emulator requires its filename to match the game file.

Trade using two connected game instances

The labels and menus differ between emulator versions, so look for the documented function that opens a second multiplayer instance or selects the game’s link or wireless mode. Historical mGBA support guidance describes opening a multiplayer window and loading a game in each one, but its menu wording is not a universal current path. The required outcome is two compatible, independently saved games connected through the right emulated method.

1. Open two emulator instances or windows and load the compatible games with their separate save files.
2. Select the connection mode used by the specific title: cable link, Wireless Adapter, local wireless, or a documented network-link mode. Do not substitute one mode for another just because it is available.
3. Advance both games to the in-game trading facility and unlock multiplayer if the story requires it. Depending on the title, this may be a Pokémon Center, Cable Club, Union Room, or another facility; follow the game’s own instructions if it is unavailable.
4. On the sending game, check the Pokémon and attach its required item, if any. Offer it for trade and accept the exchange on both sides.
5. Wait for the entire exchange and evolution animation to finish. Confirm that the evolved Pokémon appears in the receiving party or storage.
6. Return to normal gameplay and save through each game’s regular save system. Close both instances, reopen the receiving save, and verify the Pokémon before moving that save back to your usual device.

What to expect from mGBA, DS emulators, and mobile

Game Boy Advance and mGBA

mGBA’s project README lists local same-computer link-cable support, networked multiplayer link-cable support, and Wireless Adapter support. The FAQ describes link-cable support as partial, so treat mGBA as a starting point rather than a promise that a particular game will work. Confirm that the current build supports the connection method your title needs, especially for games that use the Wireless Adapter.

Nintendo DS and other later systems

For DS games, the emulator has to reproduce the local-wireless behavior used by the particular title. Opening two windows alone may not be enough, and support can differ between desktop and mobile builds. DeSmuME, melonDS, and other emulators should not be treated as universal trading solutions: check current documentation for the exact title, version, and communication mode. For 3DS and later games, use the same title-by-title caution rather than assuming that original online or local systems are available in an emulator.

Mobile saves

Mobile is often less convenient, but not categorically impossible. Some apps lack the needed link or wireless feature, and locating or transferring their saves may be difficult. If your mobile emulator cannot trade, exporting its normal save and temporarily using a compatible desktop emulator may be simpler than experimenting with undocumented settings. Confirm that the desktop emulator recognizes the save before changing or deleting anything.

If a genuine trade will not work

Edit a backed-up save with PKHeX

If you only need the evolved species and do not need a genuine trade record, PKHeX can edit compatible Pokémon saves. It supports multiple save formats, but the save must be in a compatible, unencrypted format. Its official project describes it as a save editor and warns against using significantly hacked Pokémon in trades or battles without disclosure. Editing a species directly may not reproduce every consequence of an actual trade, and a manually altered Pokémon is not guaranteed to pass transfer, online, competitive, or legality checks.

1. Make and preserve an untouched save backup; locate or export the emulator’s actual save file.
2. Open a working copy in PKHeX and select the Pokémon to edit.
3. Change it to the intended evolved species using the Pokémon-editing controls. Where available, an evolution-related function may better reflect the intended change than a direct species edit.
4. Review level, moves, held item, trainer details, and any legality warnings. Do not assume the editor can create a valid history for every change.
5. Save to a new output file, load that file in the emulator, and verify it in-game before deciding whether to keep it.

PKHeX is primarily a Windows application; macOS and Linux users may need a compatible runtime or a different save editor. If it cannot open the file, first confirm that you exported the normal save in a supported format rather than a save state or an emulator-specific container.

Use a trade-evolution patch for a new playthrough

Some ROM patches and randomizers replace trade requirements with level-based or item-based evolutions, or provide another in-game method. This is usually a better fit for a new run than an established save. A modified game may no longer match the original save’s identity or mechanics, and the save may depend on continuing with the same patched ROM revision and settings. Keep an unmodified backup and do not switch back and forth without checking compatibility.

Troubleshoot the symptom

The two games cannot see each other

• Confirm that both instances use compatible game versions and different save files.
• Check that both games are in the correct trading area and have multiplayer unlocked.
• Verify that the emulator supports the title’s required cable, Wireless Adapter, or local-wireless mode in the build and platform you are using.
• If using network link, check that local network or firewall settings are not blocking communication. Run both games at normal speed while diagnosing timing problems.

If those checks do not establish a connection, stop changing unrelated settings. Use a documented compatible setup or switch to a save-editor fallback.

The trade completes, but the Pokémon does not evolve

Check that the exchanged Pokémon met the exact game’s species, item, and paired-trade conditions. Make sure the full trade and evolution sequence finished; some games or emulator implementations may fail to handle the event correctly. If the requirements were met but the game returned the Pokémon unchanged, try the trade again with a verified connection, then save normally and reopen the save to check the result.

The save rolls back, disappears, or is not detected

A rollback often means an older save state or save file was loaded, or both instances wrote to the same file. Close the emulator before copying saves, restore the untouched backup if necessary, and work with a new output filename for each attempt. Check the emulator’s save directory and expected extension; a mobile app may store saves somewhere different from its exported files. Do not delete the original until the updated save loads and verifies correctly.

PKHeX reports a legality warning

A warning means the edited Pokémon’s data may not match a valid in-game history; it does not establish that the entire save is unusable. Do not treat a successful edit as proof that the Pokémon will pass a transfer, battle, or online check.
