Yes—many Xbox One controllers work with Dolphin Emulator on Android. Pair the controller with Android over Bluetooth or connect it through USB-OTG, then configure Dolphin’s GameCube Port 1 as a Standard Controller and map the Xbox buttons manually.
The main limitation is Wii input: an Xbox controller is excellent for GameCube games and button-based Wii games, but it does not automatically reproduce a Wii Remote’s infrared pointer, shaking, tilting, or other motion controls.
What you need
- An Android phone or tablet with Bluetooth or USB host/OTG support.
- Dolphin Emulator installed from its official Android distribution channel rather than an unidentified APK site.
- An Xbox One controller.
- For Bluetooth: a Bluetooth-capable controller.
- For wired play: a data-capable USB cable and compatible USB-OTG adapter or hub.
- Legally obtained game files.
Dolphin’s Android menus can vary by build, so labels such as Controllers and Controller Settings may not be identical on every device.
First, check whether your Xbox One controller supports Bluetooth
“Xbox One controller” covers multiple hardware revisions. Some Xbox One-era controllers support Bluetooth and some earlier models do not. Do not assume Bluetooth compatibility from the Xbox branding alone.

If the controller does not appear in Android’s Bluetooth device list, it may lack Bluetooth, already be connected to another device, not be in pairing mode, or need to be reset and paired again. USB is the practical fallback when the controller is not Bluetooth-capable.
Connect the controller to Android
Bluetooth method
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold its pairing/sync button until the Xbox logo begins flashing.
- On Android, open Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device. On some phones this appears under a Bluetooth or Connections heading.
- Select the controller, usually listed as Xbox Wireless Controller.
- Wait for Android to report that it is connected.
These are the standard Android steps; menu names and controller-specific pairing behavior can differ by Android version, manufacturer, and controller revision. See Google’s Android Help instructions for connecting game controllers.
Wired USB-OTG method
Use USB when the controller has no Bluetooth, wireless pairing is unreliable, or you prefer not to manage wireless battery power. You need:
- A USB cable that supports data, not only charging.
- A USB-C OTG adapter or USB-C hub compatible with your Android device.
- An Android device that supports USB host mode.
Connect the adapter to the phone or tablet, connect the controller, and check whether Android detects it. USB-OTG compatibility depends on the device, adapter, cable, and controller, so a wired connection is not guaranteed on every setup.

- Press buttons and move the sticks in an Android game or controller-testing screen.
Supported Android versions may also provide a Game Controller settings area for reviewing or customizing connected controllers. The exact location differs between Android versions and manufacturers.
If Android cannot see button presses or stick movement, Dolphin cannot fix the underlying connection. Re-pair the controller, try another data cable or OTG adapter, or switch connection methods.
Configure the Xbox controller for GameCube games in Dolphin
- Launch Dolphin.
- Open the main menu and choose Controllers, Controller Settings, or the equivalent controller-configuration entry.
- Open GameCube Controllers.
- For Port 1, select Standard Controller or the equivalent Emulated GameCube Controller option.
- Tap Configure.
- In the input-device selector, choose the connected Xbox controller.
- Select each GameCube control field, then press the Xbox button or move the corresponding stick or trigger.
- Save the configuration and start a GameCube game.
Dolphin’s official controller guide describes this process: each GameCube port can use an emulated Standard Controller, and controls are assigned by selecting a device and pressing a button or moving an axis. See the Dolphin controller configuration guide and its official documentation mirror.

Important: GameCube trigger clicks
GameCube L and R controls combine an analog trigger with a full-press digital click. Xbox triggers are analog, so a game may recognize the trigger’s range but not its click at the end.

If Dolphin exposes separate analog and digital trigger fields, map the Xbox trigger to the analog input and assign the digital portion to the corresponding trigger-click input. If the click is unreliable or unavailable, map the GameCube digital trigger action to a bumper instead. Test this in the actual game.
How to bind each control without mapping the wrong device
- Confirm the Xbox controller is selected in Input Device.
- Tap the field for one GameCube control.
- Press the desired Xbox button or move one stick axis.
- Check that Dolphin displays an input from the Xbox device.
- Repeat one control at a time.
- Clear any accidental or duplicate binding before trying again.
A common mistake is attempting to bind controls while the touchscreen, keyboard, or a disconnected controller is selected. Dolphin’s Android interface includes states for selecting a device, handling disconnected devices, clearing settings, and resetting configurations. If no device is selected, reconnect the controller or choose it manually.
Fix stick drift and incorrect analog movement
Test the sticks before launching a long game session. If a character moves while the left stick is untouched, or the camera moves without input, the controller may have physical drift or the mapping may need calibration.
- Make sure the left stick is assigned to the GameCube main stick and the right stick to the C-stick.
- Calibrate the stick if your Dolphin build provides calibration controls.
- Add a small dead zone only when necessary. A large dead zone can make precise movement difficult.
- Check each axis independently and verify that the stick reaches its full range.
- Test the controller outside Dolphin to distinguish configuration problems from hardware drift.
Dolphin’s controller documentation covers axis assignments, calibration, and limiting stick radius. Incorrect or malformed axis assignments can cause centering or disconnect-style problems; clearing and remapping the affected axis is often the quickest recovery.
Save a controller profile
If your Android build exposes profile controls, save the working GameCube mapping. A profile makes it easier to restore the setup after experimenting, changing controllers, or updating Dolphin. You can also maintain separate layouts for different games.

Profile names, storage behavior, and portability can differ between Android builds. Do not assume a desktop Dolphin profile path or an older Android mapping will transfer perfectly. Dolphin changed its Android input system substantially in 2023, and older configurations may need to be recreated in newer builds. See the Dolphin 2023 progress report and the current controller-profile documentation.

Configure the Xbox controller for Wii games
Wii games use the Wii Remotes configuration area, not just the GameCube controller port.
- Open Dolphin’s controller settings.
- Open Wii Remotes.
- Choose Emulated Wii Remote for the required slot.
- Open its configuration screen.
- Map the available buttons, D-pad, directional inputs, and motion-related controls.
- Save a separate profile where possible.
An Xbox controller can work well for traditional button-based Wii games and for some carefully designed custom mappings. However, it does not physically provide a Wii Remote’s infrared pointer, shaking, tilting, or other motion gestures. Games that depend heavily on those inputs may be awkward or effectively unsuitable with an ordinary Xbox pad.
Games requiring a pointer, Nunchuk, Balance Board, unusual motion gestures, or other Wii peripherals may need a compatible Wii Remote setup, a different controller with supported motion sensors, or a per-game workaround. Adding the Xbox controller’s second analog stick does not automatically reproduce infrared pointing or physical shaking.

Common problems and recovery steps
The controller is not found by Android
- Confirm the specific controller revision supports Bluetooth.
- Turn off Bluetooth on previously paired devices so they cannot reconnect first.
- Remove the controller from Android’s saved devices.
- Restart the controller and Android Bluetooth.
- Enter pairing mode again and search for it.
- Try USB-OTG with a known data cable if the controller supports wired data.
Android sees it, but Dolphin does not list it
- Close and reopen Dolphin after pairing or plugging in the controller.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller.
- Open the controller configuration instead of relying on automatic mappings.
- Select the Xbox device manually in the input-device menu.
- Reset the affected configuration and remap it.
- If the mapping was created on an older Dolphin Android build, recreate it.
The controller works in menus, but buttons do nothing in a game
Menu navigation does not prove that the game’s emulated controller is configured. Check that GameCube Port 1 is set to Standard Controller and that the Xbox device is mapped in that port’s configuration. For a Wii game, configure an Emulated Wii Remote instead.
Buttons or sticks are mapped incorrectly
Clear the affected field and remap it with only the Xbox controller selected. Verify that the right stick is assigned to the C-stick, and check whether the game needs a digital trigger click in addition to analog trigger input.
The Wii game needs motion or pointer controls
Try a custom emulated-Wii-Remote mapping only if the game’s controls remain practical. Otherwise, use a compatible Wii Remote setup or choose a title designed around conventional controller input. An Xbox controller is not a universal Wii Remote replacement.
Bluetooth, USB, or another controller?
| Option | Best when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Your controller supports Bluetooth and you want a cable-free setup. | Pairing, battery, and device-connection issues can occur. |
| USB-OTG | The controller lacks Bluetooth or wireless input is unreliable. | Requires a data cable, compatible adapter, and Android USB host support. |
| Another Android-compatible gamepad | Your Xbox controller is not Bluetooth-capable or is unsuitable for your device. | Compatibility remains model-specific; verify Android support before buying. |
If you already own an Xbox One controller, try Bluetooth first and USB-OTG second before buying anything. If you are purchasing a controller, confirm Android compatibility, Bluetooth availability, and USB data support for the exact model. An Xbox Wireless Controller is a reasonable choice when those specifications match your device; premium features such as paddles do not solve Wii motion-control limitations. Model-specific alternatives from 8BitDo and GameSir should be checked individually rather than treated as universally compatible.
