On PS5 Pro, Sony calls its feature PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR); Sony has also announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a performance-focused option for selected games on the base PS5. Neither feature applies to every PS5 game, and the visual result depends on the game’s implementation.
How does AI upscaling work on the PS5?
A game does not always render every pixel at the resolution sent to your TV. It can render an image at a lower internal resolution and then use an upscaler to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. Sony says PSSR analyzes game images frame by frame, pixel by pixel, and uses AI to upscale them. The goal is to produce a clearer, more stable image than conventional approaches while reducing the rendering workload compared with rendering every frame natively at the final resolution. Sony’s explanation of PSSR and QSSR
That description is high-level. Sony has not publicly documented in these sources the complete reconstruction algorithm, the model’s training data, its neural-network layers, or every input used at runtime. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim a specific internal processing pipeline.
Does PSSR render a game natively at 4K?
Not necessarily. PSSR is an upscaler, so a supported game mode can render below its output resolution and reconstruct the image for a higher-resolution display. For example, Naughty Dog described PS5 Pro modes for The Last of Us Part I and The Last of Us Part II Remastered that render at 1440p, upscale to 4K with PSSR, and target 60 frames per second. That is one configuration for those games, not a universal PSSR resolution or frame-rate guarantee. Sony’s developer examples

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Native rendering at 4K means the game renders the image at 4K rather than reconstructing it from a lower-resolution render. Whether a particular PS5 Pro mode uses native rendering, PSSR, or another approach depends on the game and mode.
What are PSSR and QSSR?
| Feature | Console | What Sony says | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) | PS5 Pro | Sony describes it as an AI-driven, machine-learning upscaler that analyzes images pixel by pixel. | Supported games only; the feature and results vary by title. |
| Upgraded PSSR | PS5 Pro | Sony says its newer version improves fine-detail clarity, image and motion stability, and reconstruction precision, while giving developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. | Supported games; availability can depend on system software and game updates. |
| QSSR (Quick Spectral Super Resolution) | Base PS5 | Sony describes this as a performance-focused tier using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5. | Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first supported games in its announcement. |
Sony describes PSSR as the higher-end PS5 Pro feature and QSSR as a separate performance tier for selected base-PS5 games—not as identical implementations with interchangeable names. The named QSSR games and support information reflect Sony’s announcement; game support can change with releases and patches. Sony’s announcement PS5 Pro features and enhanced-PSSR game list

What can AI upscaling improve—and what does it not guarantee?
Sony says PSSR can improve fine detail and image stability. In its March 16, 2026 announcement about upgraded PSSR, Sony also cited more precise reconstruction and better motion stability. These are stated aims and platform claims, not a guarantee that every supported game will look better in every scene or mode. Sony’s product page notes that the result varies by title. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page Sony’s upgraded-PSSR announcement
- Clarity: Reconstruction may make fine details more legible than a conventional upscale in a given game.
- Stability: Sony says PSSR’s newer version improves image stability and motion stability.
- Performance and fidelity trade-offs: Developers choose how to balance visual quality and performance in each mode. The upscaling label alone does not establish a game’s internal resolution, output resolution, or frame rate.
Does AI upscaling work on the original PS5, or only PS5 Pro?
PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. Sony has announced QSSR for selected games on the base PS5, so AI-guided upscaling is not limited to PS5 Pro—but QSSR is a distinct, performance-focused tier, and its support is game-specific. The announcement does not establish that the full PS5 Pro PSSR implementation runs on the base console. Sony’s QSSR announcement

How to check whether a game supports PSSR
- Check the game’s current PS5 Pro feature information on its PlayStation Store page, in-game graphics settings, or the game publisher’s update notes.
- For enhanced PSSR, consult Sony’s PS5 Pro page, which lists supported games. The list is updated over time, so check it for the current lineup.
- Look at the specific graphics mode’s details. Internal resolution, output resolution, and frame-rate target are game- and mode-dependent; do not infer them from the PSSR or QSSR name alone.
Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement described a phased system-software rollout for upgraded PSSR beginning that day and named supported games and planned patches at the time. Because rollout and game support can change, consult Sony’s current support list and the game’s latest patch information for present availability.
