How Does Multistreaming Work? The Technology Explained

Multistreaming sends the same live program to multiple platforms through local encoder outputs or a cloud relay. Here’s how bandwidth, latency, transcoding, and platform rules differ.

Multistreaming—also called simulcasting—is broadcasting the same live program to more than one platform at the same time. You can send a separate output from your computer to each platform, or send one output to a cloud relay that forwards it to your chosen destinations. The first approach needs enough upload capacity for all outputs; the second reduces the number of feeds leaving your setup but adds a relay between you and the platforms.

What happens to the stream?

Your camera, microphone, game, and other sources enter an encoder. The encoder turns them into a streamable signal and sends it over the internet to a platform’s ingest server. Twitch describes this encoder-to-platform path using RTMP; YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live. Exact protocol and configuration requirements depend on the destination.

Multistreaming changes where the signal is copied and sent onward. It does not automatically combine audiences or create one shared chat: each platform remains a separate destination with its own account, rules, and viewer experience.

Local outputs: your setup sends to every destination

With local multistreaming, encoder software or hardware sends an output to each platform’s ingest destination. In simplified form, the path is sources → encoder → platform A, platform B, and so on. You configure each destination, and each outgoing feed uses upload capacity. If you encode separate outputs, the computer may also have more encoding work to do; the exact load depends on the software, hardware, and output design.

Cloud relay: one feed goes up, then gets distributed

With a cloud relay, your setup sends one stream to a service, which forwards it to the destinations you select: sources → encoder → relay → platform A, platform B, and so on. YouTube describes this as a cloud service receiving one high-quality live stream and distributing it to selected channels, resolutions, or platforms. This can simplify destination setup and reduce the upload capacity needed from your connection, but adds a network hop. Service limits, destination support, and available output options vary, so check the service’s current terms.

Local outputs or a cloud relay?

Consideration Local outputs Cloud relay
Upload capacity Plan for the sum of the bitrates sent to each destination. Your connection sends one feed to the relay, according to the service’s description; the relay handles onward distribution.
Computer and setup More outputs can mean more configuration and, if you encode them separately, additional processing demand. Can reduce local distribution work. YouTube presents cloud encoding as an option for simpler setup and lighter demands on an older or slower computer.
Control Separate outputs can allow destination-specific settings, with added setup complexity. Output settings and transcoding options depend on the service and plan.
Latency There is no relay leg, but each platform still processes and delivers the stream. The relay adds a network leg. Restream says its own service adds under two seconds of delay; destination platforms may add more. That is a Restream-specific claim, not a general guarantee.
Reliability and rules You must keep the local setup, connection, account access, and destination settings working, and follow each platform’s rules. You rely on the relay as well as the destination platforms. Check its limits and support for your destinations, and follow each platform’s rules.
Cost and limits Costs depend on your existing equipment and connection; no universal amount is established. Services may have different free or paid tiers, destination caps, and features. Check current terms and pricing before choosing.

How much upload speed does local multistreaming need?

Add the target bitrates for all the outputs leaving your setup. YouTube Help gives this example: a 6 Mbps output plus a 4 Mbps output makes a combined target of 10 Mbps. For that example, YouTube advises aiming for 1.5 to 2 times the combined target upload speed for stability—15–20 Mbps. This is YouTube’s guidance for its example, not a guarantee or a universal requirement for every setup.

  1. List each destination’s target bitrate. Use the settings appropriate to that platform, resolution, and frame rate.
  2. Add the outgoing bitrates. For example, 6 Mbps + 4 Mbps = 10 Mbps of target stream traffic.
  3. Allow headroom. YouTube’s example guidance suggests 1.5–2 times that total, or 15–20 Mbps for the 10 Mbps example.
  4. Test under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends a speed test with typical audio and video movement. A speed test result alone does not guarantee a stable live stream.

Restream’s 2024 Help Center guidance advises a minimum bandwidth of 10 Mbps and recommends 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD, for its service. Treat those as Restream’s service recommendations, not universal requirements. A relay changes how many feeds your connection sends; it does not remove the need for a stable connection or destination-appropriate settings.

Multistreaming is not transcoding

Multistreaming sends a program to several destinations. Transcoding takes one source feed and creates other versions, often at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. As OBS Project explains, those alternate versions can give viewers options suited to their devices or connections. Transcoding availability depends on the destination platform; do not assume that a multistreaming tool provides it or that every platform offers the same quality choices.

Likewise, sending to several platforms does not mean every platform receives the same settings. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers its own supported resolutions, frame rates, bitrates, and protocols. Choose settings for each destination rather than treating one bitrate or resolution as universal.

What to prepare before going live

  1. Confirm each account can stream. YouTube says a channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. The first activation can take at least 24 hours after the request, so do not leave it until just before an event.
  2. Choose local outputs or a relay. For local outputs, check the encoder’s destination support and whether your computer and upload connection can handle the configuration. For a relay, check that it supports every destination you intend to use and review its current limits and settings.
  3. Configure each destination. You may need the platform’s server URL and stream key, unless your encoder or service handles them. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish them or share them with people who should not control your stream.
  4. Check each platform’s current requirements. Confirm its ingest protocol, encoder settings, account eligibility, and content rules. YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live; requirements may differ elsewhere and can change.
  5. Run a realistic test. Check audio and picture, connection stability, the correct destination on every platform, and any delay that matters to your show. A test helps reveal configuration problems before a public broadcast.

Platform rules still apply to every destination

Multistreaming does not override platform policies. Twitch permits simulcasting under its guidelines, but says the Twitch experience must not be degraded and restricts using Twitch to direct viewers to another live stream in the ways described in its FAQ. Check the current Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ and any agreement that affects your eligibility. YouTube and other destinations have their own rules, which you should check separately.

Common problems and what to check

  • One destination works, another does not: Confirm that the failing platform is enabled in your encoder or relay, and recheck its server URL, stream key, account eligibility, and ingest settings.
  • The stream buffers or drops frames: For local outputs, recalculate the combined target bitrate and compare it with a realistic upload test; reduce output demands or use a relay if your connection cannot sustain them. Check for other activity using the connection.
  • The computer struggles: Check encoder load and whether you are producing multiple separate encodes. Consider reducing the local workload or using a cloud relay, while verifying its destination support and output options.
  • The picture looks different across platforms: Check each destination’s supported settings and whether it provides transcoding. A destination may not offer alternate quality versions, and multistreaming itself does not create them.
  • There is more delay than expected: Separate the relay’s contribution from destination processing. Restream’s under-two-second statement applies to its own service; it does not describe end-to-end delay on every platform.
  • You cannot start a YouTube live stream: Verify the channel and live-streaming eligibility, and allow for YouTube’s stated first-activation wait of at least 24 hours after requesting access.
