To trade an eligible item at GameStop, check its current value and whether a participating store accepts it, bring the item with the parts needed to use it, and let store staff inspect it and make a final offer. GameStop advertises cash or store credit, but eligibility, value and available payout methods depend on the item and current program terms.
1. Check the item and participating store
Start with GameStop’s trade-in page to look up an estimate and find a store. The program covers select products—including games, consoles, controllers, phones, tablets and wearables—but applies only to select products and select stores in the United States and Guam. Check your exact item and location before making a trip.
A displayed estimate is not a guaranteed final offer. GameStop assesses the item in store and determines its condition, eligibility and final value. The official pages reviewed do not provide a complete list of eligible products or participating locations.
2. Bring the parts needed to use the item
GameStop’s guidance is: “If it came with your original purchase and is required to use the item, bring it.” For a console, that can include the original controller, power cable, HDMI cable and other included cords or chargers. Missing components may reduce the value or cause the item to be rejected.

Original packaging, printed manuals and paper inserts are not required. Read GameStop’s trade-in requirements if you are unsure which functional parts to bring.
3. Prepare electronics and protect your data
For phones, tablets and other electronics, charge the device, back up anything you want to keep, then remove personal information and accessories that did not originally come with the product. GameStop’s trade-summary instructions say to delete sensitive or personal images and stored or cached data, and remove SIM cards and memory cards. Its terms address liability for data left on traded devices, so do not hand over a device before checking that your personal data is gone.

4. Take the item in for assessment
Bring the item and its functional accessories to a participating store. GameStop staff determine whether it qualifies and assess its condition; the amount you receive may differ from an online estimate. Some item pages may provide a saved summary with an expiration time and instructions to bring it in. Treat that as item-specific: it does not establish that every estimate can be saved or honored in the same way.

Compare the cash and credit offers for your item, then compare the final in-store assessment with the estimate before deciding.
