Final Fantasy Resonance producer Keisuke Nakashima describes the game’s combat concept as an experiment: combine the job-system inspiration of Final Fantasy V with the distinctive character traits of Final Fantasy VI. In Resonance, that means characters keep personal abilities while Visions let players add job-like abilities and customize their party.
What the FFV-and-FFVI experiment means
In a Kotaku interview published October 2, 2026, producer Keisuke Nakashima said the starting question was: “what if we take the job system from Final Fantasy 5 and the unique characteristics of each character in Final Fantasy 6, what would that look like?” He described the combination as an experiment that required research and innovation.
The aim is to balance two competing goals: let players adapt characters to a situation, without making those characters feel interchangeable. Nakashima said the resulting design preserves distinct characteristics while allowing additional customization. That is the developers’ description of their intention, not evidence that the finished game achieves perfect balance.
How Visions work
Visions are equipment that function like jobs: equipping one gives a character access to associated abilities. The character also retains personal abilities and traits. In an AUTOMATON WEST interview published June 10, 2026, Nakashima gave Cloud’s Vision as an example: equip it on another character and that character can use Cross-Slash.

This structure lets players choose characters they like and pair them with abilities suited to a situation. It is not simply a system in which a Vision replaces a character’s own move set; the intended mix is personal identity plus a customizable set of Vision abilities.
How customization is meant to preserve character roles
Nakashima said the team rebuilt character abilities for Resonance’s combat context while retaining recognizable moves and individual personality. He also said the developers wanted all 26 characters appearing in the game to have a purpose on the battlefield, without particular characters being weaker or harder to use. That count and balance goal are claims from the producer, not independently verified measures of the final game.

The design tension is important: if Vision abilities dominate, distinct characters risk feeling like interchangeable carriers for jobs; if personal abilities dominate, customization may matter less. The developers’ stated approach is to make both layers useful, though interviews alone cannot establish how well that works across the full game.
Where stagger fits into the combat experiment
Nakashima also said the team reconsidered the stagger system, making it part of the combat-design experiment rather than a separate feature. RPGFan’s September 3, 2026 hands-on preview describes one limited-session combat loop: enemies have visible HP and stagger bars, attacks against weaknesses reduce stagger, and staggering an enemy creates follow-up opportunities that can culminate in a Vision-based Resonance Attack.

That account gives a practical example of how character abilities, Vision abilities, and stagger may connect in a fight. It is RPGFan’s description of a preview session; it does not establish the balance, variety, or quality of combat throughout the full game.
What the older-game comparison does—and does not—tell us
The FFV/FFVI pairing is Nakashima’s own shorthand for the concept, not a comparison inferred by a reviewer. The interviews do not provide a detailed, side-by-side account of the complete combat systems in either older game, so the comparison should not be expanded into specific claims about how Resonance reproduces their mechanics. The supported point is narrower: the team wanted job-like customization alongside recognizable character-specific qualities.

Release-date reports conflict
Published reports give different launch dates: Kotaku’s October 2, 2026 interview says October 22, while Nintendo Wire’s September 17, 2026 interview reports October 17. Those reports do not resolve the discrepancy, so neither date should be treated as settled here. Check Square Enix or the relevant platform storefront for the current listing.
