There is no universal number of days or single test that clears a footballer after a minor muscle problem. Return to play is a criteria-based medical decision: the player must be ready for unrestricted training and match selection, based on symptoms, physical and football-specific performance, confidence, and input from the relevant medical and performance staff.
What “return to play” means
A worldwide football hamstring consensus defines return to play as “the moment a player has received criteria-based medical clearance and is mentally ready for full availability for match selection and/or full training.” The definition makes readiness—not a first team session or match appearance—the key milestone. A completed match, finishing rehabilitation, reaching a particular fitness score, or having no symptoms whatsoever is not the definition itself.
Return to training and return to play can also describe different stages. The Italian consensus distinguishes return to training (RTT), which may involve restrictions, from return to play (RTP), meaning training and competition without restriction. A player may therefore take part in some team work before being cleared for unrestricted football.
What clinicians assess before clearance
Symptoms and clinical examination
For hamstring injuries, the worldwide consensus includes no pain on palpation and no pain during strength, flexibility, or functional testing. The player’s response to football-specific actions matters too; a systematic review found that absence of pain during soccer-specific actions was among the commonly reported hamstring criteria.

Strength and flexibility
Clinicians compare flexibility with pre-injury information and/or the uninjured side, depending on what is available and reliable for that player. Strength is another commonly used measure. A 2026 systematic review of male soccer players found that reported hamstring criteria often included comparisons of knee-flexor and knee-extensor strength between limbs. These are frequently used assessment domains, not a universally validated threshold that guarantees a safe return.
Football-specific performance
Field testing checks whether the player can handle relevant football demands. In a Delphi study involving English professional clubs, functional performance received the highest ratings among five criteria domains, and sprint ability was considered particularly important. The Italian consensus also discusses field tests and objective GPS-based criteria. Neither source establishes one numeric target that applies to every player.

Confidence and readiness
Physical testing is only part of the decision. Player confidence and psychological readiness are included in the hamstring consensus criteria. A player’s own assessment should be considered alongside medical findings and performance information.
Who makes the decision?
Return-to-play decisions draw on shared information from the player, sports physician, physiotherapist, fitness trainer, and coach. Their roles are not identical: medical clearance is a clinical responsibility, while performance staff and the coach contribute information about training demands and team context. The decision should reflect the player’s symptoms, examination, functional capacity, and readiness rather than a single observation.

The worldwide hamstring consensus involved 58 experts selected through 28 FIFA Medical Centres of Excellence, with response rates above 83% in each of its four Delphi rounds. A separate English professional-club Delphi study included 20 participants, from a 21.7% participation rate among invited clubs; its authors said further work was needed to establish whether the agreed criteria were valid.
Why training photos and scans do not settle the question
A player appearing in a training photo or completing part of a session does not establish that they have completed testing or been cleared for unrestricted activity. Likewise, being named in a squad does not reveal whether the player has restrictions or is available for selection.

For hamstring readiness, the worldwide consensus says MRI findings should not be used as the measure of return-to-play readiness. Imaging may be part of assessment or care, but a scan alone does not determine whether the player can meet football demands without restriction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why there is no standard return date
The available football-specific criteria do not establish a universal number of days for a “minor” muscle problem. Duration depends on the particular injury and the individual assessment; criteria used for clearance should not be converted into a fixed day-count prediction.

Evidence also varies by muscle group. A 2025 expert survey involving 63 injury-management professionals assessed a 20-criterion protocol for adductor longus injuries across clinical, functional, and performance categories. It represents developing expert work, not a settled universal standard. A 2026 systematic review included 135 studies from 58,057 records and searched databases through 10 March 2024, but commonly reported criteria are not automatically proven predictors for every individual player.
How to interpret a player’s status
- Restricted training: the player may be back with the team but is not necessarily cleared for all training demands.
- Unrestricted training: the player has progressed beyond modified participation, though availability for a specific match remains a separate selection decision.
- Available for selection: the player has received the relevant clearance and is considered ready for match selection; the coach still decides whether to select them.
When comparing two players or updates, look for what each can do, how symptoms respond during and after testing, how strength and flexibility compare with relevant baselines, and whether the status is restricted or unrestricted. A headline saying “back in training” does not by itself answer those questions.
This is general information, not an individual diagnosis or clearance decision.
