Publishers also set rules for sharing leaked footage and spoilers. The documented examples below come from specific companies, platform guidance, and service providers—not a single industry-wide standard.
Confidentiality can continue after an announcement
Announcing a game does not necessarily make every detail public. Ubisoft’s Code of Conduct says employees must continue to protect unreleased confidential information after an announcement. It also directs employees who are not official spokespeople to send media, analyst, or investor inquiries to the appropriate communications team.
The same code recommends secure processes for logins, device configuration, and third-party services. These are Ubisoft’s stated expectations; they should not be read as a universal rule for every studio.
How studios can control access to confidential builds
Set up a confidential Steam playtest deliberately
Steamworks documents a method for testing an unannounced game through release override keys on the unreleased base app. A key alone does not place its recipient under the developer’s nondisclosure agreement (NDA), so developers need a separate way to register participants and obtain agreement before distributing access. Steamworks also suggests considering a nondescript codename and planning how to manage the keys after the test ends. See Steamworks’ Steam Playtest documentation.

Use layered controls with external testers
PlaytestCloud describes options it offers for external testing: requiring NDA acceptance before build access, applying an optional visible watermark linked to a unique player ID, disabling access after a test, and checking that a build does not inadvertently reveal the studio or project. These are provider-described capabilities, not proof that every studio or playtest uses them. Details appear on PlaytestCloud’s security page.
What watermarks can—and cannot—do
A watermark can make a recording or other material traceable to a tester, user, build, or distribution context. PlaytestCloud says its visible watermark links recordings to a unique tester ID. Denuvo by Irdeto describes identifiers associated with users, builds, or distribution environments in its discussion of pre-release game security.

This is a potential investigative lead, not a guarantee that a leak can be prevented or conclusively attributed. The cited descriptions come from service providers and do not establish how widely these methods are used or how effective they are in practice.
How publisher policies address leaked material and spoilers
Square Enix
Square Enix’s West Material Usage Policy prohibits posting unofficial game content, including leaked or embargo-violating material, and asks creators to clearly mark spoilers. The policy has scope exceptions for certain franchises, so its terms should be checked for the specific game in question.

Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games Support says it will take down footage from leaked copies posted before a game’s official release. It also identifies endings, cutscene compilations, and major story reveals as spoiler material in its policy on posting copyrighted Rockstar Games material. These pages state publisher policies; they do not establish which legal remedies may apply in a particular jurisdiction.
