How Game Studios Use Generative AI in Game Development

Game developers report using generative AI most often for research and brainstorming, with code assistance and prototyping also appearing in surveys. Adoption, policies and concerns vary, and reported use does not prove AI-generated content is common in released games.

Game studios and their employees report using generative AI mainly for research, brainstorming, routine tasks, code assistance and prototyping—not as proof that AI is routinely making finished games or their player-facing content. Adoption and rules differ across the industry, and available survey figures measure respondents’ reports rather than every studio’s practice.

How widespread is generative AI use in game development?

In the Game Developers Conference’s 2026 State of the Game Industry report, based on more than 2,300 game-industry professionals, 36% said they used generative AI tools as part of their job. A separate measure found that 30% of respondents at game studios reported using AI tools. These percentages have different denominators: the first covers professionals across the game industry, while the second is limited to respondents at studios. Neither is a census of studios or evidence that all employees at a given company use AI. GDC’s 2026 report summarizes the survey.

A commercial survey offers a different picture. Google Cloud’s 2025 games report describes a Harris Poll survey of 615 developers, reporting that 90% used AI in workflows and 95% automated repetitive tasks. Those are vendor-sponsored survey claims, with different framing and a stated sample size; they should not be compared directly with GDC’s figures as if the surveys measured the same population and questions. Google Cloud’s report presents its findings.

What do developers use it for?

GDC’s 2026 survey reports several uses among respondents who use generative AI. These are task-use responses, not mutually exclusive shares of studios: respondents may use multiple tools for different purposes. They describe reported work, not measured savings or proof that outputs are production-ready.

Reported use Share reported by GDC What the figure means
Research or brainstorming 81% Respondents’ reported use for exploring ideas or gathering information
Daily tasks, such as email 47% Reported assistance with routine work
Code assistance 47% Reported help with coding tasks; not a measure of correctness or production readiness
Prototyping 35% Reported use during early exploration of concepts

These percentages are from the GDC 2026 survey summary; they apply to the respondents in the relevant usage reporting, not to all game studios. GDC’s report gives the survey context.

Research, ideation and routine tasks

Research and brainstorming are the most commonly reported use in GDC’s breakdown. This points to AI as an aid for exploring possibilities or handling everyday work, rather than evidence that it makes final creative decisions. Daily-task examples include email. The survey does not establish how much time these uses save.

Code and prototypes

Code assistance and prototyping are also reported uses. They can support experimentation, but the survey does not evaluate whether generated code is correct, secure, maintainable or suitable for a shipped game. GDC’s 2026 Trends Report also recounts conference discussion of automated coding and help with outlining, brainstorming and routine administration; discussion is not a controlled measurement of production outcomes. GDC’s 2026 Trends Report describes those examples.

Art and 3D workflows

In its 2025 report, GDC lists concept-art and 3D-model generation among applications developers see for game work, alongside coding support and repetitive-task automation. Its 2026 Trends Report names more specific examples: a skeleton-generation model from Tencent Games and Adobe Substance 3D Painter’s Warp to Geometry feature. These illustrate tools and techniques discussed in the industry; they do not establish widespread use, finished-asset quality or gains in a production pipeline. GDC’s 2025 report and its 2026 Trends Report provide the examples.

Does that mean AI is making game content for players?

Not on the evidence summarized here. The cited GDC survey and conference reporting establish reported work-tool uses and named examples, but do not establish how extensively generative AI appears in released games’ dialogue, narrative, voices, music or other player-facing content. A demonstration, an internal workflow and a feature shipped to players are different kinds of evidence; one does not prove the others.

How do studios set rules for AI tools?

GDC’s 2025 survey found that 64% of respondents said their company had some form of internal generative-AI policy, compared with 51% in its 2024 report. Among respondents at AAA studios, the 2025 figure was 78%. These are survey responses, not a count of companies independently verified to have policies. GDC’s 2025 report describes the categories and results.

The reported approaches vary. Some organizations make tools optional, permit only selected tools, prohibit their use or mandate it; some respondents reported no policy, while others were unsure or said the question did not apply. The figures therefore point to company-level choices, not one industry-wide rule. The cited reports do not establish a universal legal standard, contract requirement or distribution-platform obligation.

Why is generative AI contested in games?

GDC’s 2026 survey summary says 52% of respondents viewed generative AI as having a negative impact on the game industry, while about 7% viewed its impact positively. These figures describe respondents’ opinions; they are not legal findings or technical evaluations. GDC’s 2026 report gives the results.

In its 2025 report, GDC records concerns including intellectual-property theft, energy consumption, generated-content quality, potential bias and regulatory issues. These concerns help explain why policies differ: a studio’s choice to allow a tool for a limited internal task is not the same as approving its use for every asset or for content delivered to players. The cited survey records concerns and policy responses, but does not resolve jurisdiction-specific legal questions. GDC’s 2025 report covers the concerns.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

  • Survey responses: GDC’s figures show what respondents reported or believed, not a census of companies, independently audited usage or a measure of output quality.
  • Named examples: Conference reporting identifies particular tools and approaches, but does not by itself show how widely they are deployed or whether they improve cost, speed or quality.
  • Vendor-sponsored results: Google Cloud’s Harris Poll summary uses its own framing and sample. Treat its figures as that survey’s claims, not a directly comparable estimate against GDC.
  • Unmeasured outcomes: The cited sources do not establish comparable productivity gains, cost reductions or shipped-game quality improvements across studios.
