GOG’s Preservation Program tests and maintains selected games so they continue to run on modern Windows PCs. Players can help by signaling which games they want to see preserved and, optionally, supporting the work through GOG Patrons. The effort addresses compatibility for chosen titles—not every lost or historically important game, and not every operating system.
What is the GOG Preservation Program?
GOG describes the program as an effort to keep selected games playable on modern systems after developer support ends. Its work centers on compatibility and ongoing maintenance. GOG also advertises DRM-free games and dedicated technical support, but the program stamp refers specifically to titles that have passed its preservation process.
At launch in 2024, GOG said the program began with 100 classic games, using updated, improved, or quality-tested versions. GOG’s live program page displayed 283 games when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is a changing catalog count, not a promise to cover all older games.
To explain the larger preservation problem, GOG’s launch announcement cited the Video Game History Foundation as saying that 87% of games created before 2010 were inaccessible at the time. That figure is attributed here to GOG’s announcement; the underlying Foundation study and its definition of “inaccessible” are not established by the cited announcement.

How does GOG test and maintain a game?
GOG says a candidate must pass its quality tests. If it does not, the team updates or improves it until it meets the company’s standards. GOG then applies the Preservation Program stamp and commits to maintenance. The company notes that Windows updates and graphics-driver changes can introduce compatibility problems, and asks players to report issues so GOG can investigate and, where possible, fix them for everyone.
The stated goal is to preserve the original experience. GOG says it does not automatically fold community modifications into its maintenance work, in part because it does not want responsibility for keeping a game working to shift onto fans. That focus is useful but narrower than complete historical preservation: the program is not a claim that every build, platform, source-code artifact, or legally unavailable game has been recovered.

Will a GOG Preservation Program game work on a modern PC?
GOG says the program is currently Windows-only. Its FAQ frames support for other operating systems as a future priority, so the program stamp should not be read as certification for macOS or Linux. It is also not a guarantee that no compatibility issue will ever arise; GOG’s maintenance commitment and issue-reporting process are intended to address problems as they occur.
Before buying or installing a specific game, check its current store listing for supported operating systems and requirements. Program membership alone does not establish that a title runs on every PC configuration.

How can the community help preserve old games?
Signal interest through Dreamlist
GOG’s program page includes a community route for expressing interest in games. Such signals can help show which titles players want considered; they do not guarantee that GOG can obtain the rights, restore a game, or add it to the program.
Support the work through GOG Patrons
Patrons is an optional monthly support program. GOG says contributions help it restore, maintain, and improve more classic PC games through the Preservation Program. The company has described recognition benefits including a Patron-only Discord with video content, credit on program game pages, and a profile badge. Those are acknowledgements and community access, not exclusive game content. Current prices, tiers, and terms are not specified in the cited announcement, so check GOG’s live page for current details.

Does delisting remove a game from the program?
GOG says no: a game that is delisted from sale remains in the Preservation Program, and the company intends to continue compatibility maintenance for it. This is a maintenance commitment, not a guarantee that the game will remain available to buy, or that it will be offered in every country.

GOG’s approach is practical compatibility preservation: test a selected game, improve it when needed, and maintain it as modern Windows environments change. Community interest and optional funding support that work. The program does not establish that every classic can be restored or distributed, nor does it claim to resolve licensing barriers or preserve every version and platform.

The catalog changes over time. For comparison, PC Gamer reported 250 program games on November 1, 2025, while GOG’s live page displayed 283 on October 8, 2026. The later figure is the more current snapshot of those two sources, not a fixed program limit.
