How League of Legends Works: Roles, Lanes, Objectives, and Win Conditions

A clear beginner guide to League of Legends’ Summoner’s Rift: how lanes and positions work, what Baron and Drakes offer, and how teams win.

In Summoner’s Rift, two teams of five compete to destroy the opposing team’s Nexus. Lanes, champion kills, gold, and jungle objectives all matter because they help a team clear a path to that final target—not because any of them replaces the Nexus as the win condition.

How do you win in League of Legends?

In the popular Summoner’s Rift mode, the first team to destroy the enemy Nexus wins. Riot Games’ League of Legends How to Play guide states: “Destroy the enemy’s Nexus first to win the game.” The game is a 5v5 strategy match, as Riot also describes on its official League of Legends homepage.

The practical loop is to earn experience and gold, use them to strengthen your champions, move minion waves through lanes, and remove defenses that stand between your team and the enemy base. Kills can create an advantage, but they are not a separate victory condition.

What are lanes and how is the map arranged?

Summoner’s Rift has three lanes—top, middle, and bottom—with jungle areas between them. Each lane runs toward an enemy base. Turrets and an inhibitor defend each lane’s route; Riot’s beginner guide describes three turrets and one inhibitor per lane, plus two turrets guarding each Nexus. Map details can change with game updates. Riot’s 2019 map-design retrospective also identifies the three lanes, jungle, Baron pit, dragon pit, and two bases as core elements of the map.

Turrets, inhibitors, and the route to the Nexus

Turrets attack enemy minions and champions and provide limited vision for their team. They are safer to attack when allied minions are nearby, so teams commonly push a wave forward before trying to damage a turret. Inhibitors are the next major lane defense beyond turrets. Clearing a lane’s defenses opens the approach toward the Nexus, though two turrets still guard the Nexus itself.

What are the five positions?

Riot’s beginner guide recommends five positions: top, jungle, mid, bot, and support. These names describe a player’s usual map assignment, not champion classes such as mage, tank, or marksman.

Position Usual location Beginner-level role
Top Top lane Often a tough solo fighter who holds the lane and focuses on powerful opponents.
Jungle Jungle areas between lanes Works among neutral monsters and plants, connecting lane pressure with jungle objectives.
Mid Middle lane Often a high-burst champion who can play alone or join the team and seek chances to outplay opponents.
Bot Bottom lane One of the lane assignments; commonly shares the lane with a support player.
Support Usually paired in bottom lane A distinct team position that works with the bot-lane partner in the standard setup.

Top and mid are described as solo lanes in Riot’s guide. In the common five-position setup, bot and support share the bottom-lane assignment, while the jungler operates between lanes. These are orientation points rather than fixed rules: champion choices and team assignments can vary.

What do Baron and Drakes do?

The jungle contains neutral monsters. Riot’s beginner guide identifies Baron Nashor and Drakes as especially important because defeating them grants team benefits that can affect the game. Baron is described as the most powerful jungle monster: defeating him grants bonus attack damage and ability power, an empowered recall, and greatly strengthens nearby minions.

That makes Baron’s reward useful for turning an objective win into pressure on lanes and structures. Drakes also grant unique benefits, though their exact rewards and the best time to pursue any objective depend on the current game and patch. There is no single mandatory objective order established by Riot’s beginner guide.

How do champions get stronger?

Champions gain experience to level up and gold to buy items. Those gains help a team become strong enough to win fights and advance through defended lanes. A kill may help secure an advantage, but experience and gold are means to the larger goal: destroying the enemy Nexus.

How the pieces fit together

  • Grow: Earn experience and gold to improve champions.
  • Advance: Push minion waves and take down lane defenses.
  • Use the jungle: Contest neutral objectives when doing so helps your team gain an advantage.
  • Finish: Reach and destroy the enemy Nexus.

This is the basic structure of Summoner’s Rift, not a script every match follows. Exact objective rewards and tactical priorities can shift with patches; the central distinction remains that kills and objectives help create a route to the Nexus, while destroying it wins the game.
