Steam says it sends Steam Guard emails immediately, but delivery to your inbox can take longer. Steam’s code-help page says to wait up to 30 minutes; if the email still has not arrived, try signing in again to generate a new code. If it remains missing after three hours, Steam’s FAQ says to contact Steam Support.
Why a Steam Guard email may be delayed
There are two separate steps: Steam generates and sends the message, then your email provider delivers it and puts it somewhere you can see. Steam says it sends the email immediately, but provider processing or filtering can delay its arrival. The 30-minute wait is Steam’s troubleshooting threshold, not a guarantee that every email will arrive within that time. Steam’s Steam Guard FAQ explains the delivery distinction.
Steam sends the code to the last email address registered to your account, which may not be the inbox you normally check. It could be an older personal, school, work, or internet-provider address, or the mailbox behind a forwarding address.
What to do while you wait
- Check the registered email address. Make sure you are looking in the mailbox currently attached to your Steam account.
- Search your mailbox. Search for “Steam,” “Steam Guard,” or
[email protected]. Check spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and other filtered folders. - Trust Steam’s sender addresses. Add
[email protected]and[email protected]to your contacts or email client’s trusted-sender list, as Steam recommends. - Check that the mailbox works. As practical checks, confirm the account is active and has storage available. A school or work mailbox may also have administrator-controlled quarantine or blocking that a personal allowlist cannot override.
- Wait up to 30 minutes. Keep checking the correct mailbox and its filtered folders. Steam’s Steam Guard Code Help page gives this wait time before recommending a new login attempt.
After 30 minutes: request a fresh code
If the message has not arrived after 30 minutes, exit Steam and start a new login attempt. Steam says signing in again generates a new verification email. Avoid submitting login attempts repeatedly in quick succession: multiple delayed emails can make it unclear which code to use, and Steam does not specify a resend limit in the cited guidance.

If several messages arrive, enter the most recent code. Steam says older codes will not work. If the newest one is rejected, start a fresh login attempt and use the latest message rather than trying older codes.
If the email is still missing after three hours
Steam’s broader FAQ advises contacting Steam Support if a verification email has not arrived after three hours. You do not need to wait that long if you have lost access to the registered mailbox or suspect someone else has changed or accessed your account; use Steam’s official account-recovery and Steam Guard help flows instead. Steam’s three-hour guidance is a point to contact Support, not a promise about how quickly Support will reply.

If you can no longer receive mail at the registered address, repeated code requests will not fix the underlying problem. Follow Steam’s recovery process and be prepared to verify account ownership. Use Steam’s official site rather than third-party code or account-recovery services.
Make sure you are checking the right Steam Guard method
Steam Guard can send a code by email or use the Steam Mobile Authenticator. If you enabled mobile authentication, the sign-in may ask you to approve it in the Steam Mobile app or enter the app’s code instead of sending an email. Steam says authenticator codes change automatically every 30 seconds; email delivery delays and SMS delivery delays are separate issues. See Steam’s Mobile Authenticator guidance.

For email-based Steam Guard, Steam’s documented client path for enabling it is Steam → Settings → Security → Manage Steam Guard → Get Steam Guard codes by email. Steam says the account email must be verified and that changing the setting requires signing in again. Client labels may vary by build.

A repeated code prompt does not necessarily mean the email is arriving late. Steam may treat a device as unrecognized if its remembered login information has been removed. Steam specifically notes that programs which clear browsing history, cookies, or other files can cause the same device to be treated as new again. Check whether your browser or cleanup utility deletes Steam-related cookies or saved login data, whether you have deauthorized the device, and whether the browser or Steam client is allowed to retain sign-in information.

If repeated email delays are a recurring problem, you can consider the Steam Mobile Authenticator instead of email-based codes. Steam describes it as its strongest account-security option among the methods in its documentation. Users who set it up can also obtain recovery codes; store them somewhere safe and follow Steam’s recovery-code instructions.
