Performer Makoto Koji made up many of Hornet’s sounds herself, shaping them to fit each moment rather than voicing every line of text.
How Makoto Koji created Hornet’s voice
Koji was an animator, not a trained voice actor. She came to perform Hornet through her proximity to Team Cherry and an opening in the role: the performer initially expected to voice Hornet planned to move overseas. Koji’s work on the character grew out of that opportunity, and she developed many of its short vocalizations herself.
“I did a lot of making up my own gibberish,” Koji told The Verge in an interview published September 28, 2025. She chose sounds that felt natural and instinctive, often using only a word or two to express what a scene called for.
What the gibberish does—and what it doesn’t
Hornet’s vocalizations are not a full, consistently translated language. They are brief performances that convey the beat or feeling of an interaction, while the written dialogue provides its fuller verbal content. The two layers work together: a short sound can make a line feel urgent, confident, or playful without having to reproduce the entire sentence aloud.

That design fits an early statement from Team Cherry. In a June 25, 2019 development update, the studio wrote, “Hornet has a voice! Though she isn’t the type to speak at length, Hornet’s not afraid to engage in conversation where necessary.” The post also noted that giving the protagonist dialogue increased the writing demands. It describes the design premise at that stage, rather than establishing how every line works in the finished game.
What “gek tuu” means
Koji said “gek tuu” was created for a scene in which Hornet tells the character, “Now is the moment. Do it now.” That was the direction she received for the vocalization, she explained to The Verge. The popular “git gud” interpretation is a joke from players, not Koji’s stated meaning for the sound.

A character with more than one side
Koji described Hornet as confident, stoic, and sure of herself, but also goofy. That mixture matters to the performance: Hornet’s sounds do more than announce that she can speak. Their delivery helps make room for different facets of her personality, from firmness to levity.
For Koji, voice is one part of a much larger process of bringing a character to life. She described the work as running from the initial sketch through drawing each frame, implementing behavior, and weaving together the narrative. “The voice / sounds of the character, or lack of, is only the final icing on the cake,” she said.
