Set Minecraft’s render distance to the highest value that stays smooth on your device, in your world, and on your server. There is no single chunk count that works for everyone: higher distance shows more terrain but makes the client render more, which can lower frame rate. If performance suffers, lower render distance and test again.
What render distance changes
Render distance is how far from the player or camera Minecraft draws blocks, entities, and other visible content. A chunk is 16 blocks wide by 16 blocks long. Increasing the distance gives you a longer view, but also asks the client’s graphics engine to do more work; Microsoft Learn warns that this can reduce performance and frame rate in its Simulation Distance, Render Distance, and Ticking Areas guide.
Render distance and simulation distance are different
Render distance determines what is drawn on screen. Simulation distance determines where game activity is processed, including entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth, and fluid movement. Lowering simulation distance can reduce gameplay-processing load, but activity outside that radius may not behave as you expect. In Bedrock, simulation distance cannot be set higher than render distance, and Microsoft Learn says it can add work for both the client and server.
Java also has a separate simulation-distance control. In the 2021 Snapshot 21w38a notes, Mojang described its purpose as allowing “higher render distance with less CPU load.” That historical note explains the distinction, but it does not establish a current Java maximum or a universal recommended setting.

Bedrock chunk ranges depend on device and world
Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock documentation, updated September 23, 2025, lists a render-distance range of 4–96 chunks. It says PC can reach up to 96 chunks, while defaults on other devices may be as low as 4. Those are documentation figures, not a promise that every device, server, or world exposes the same options.
The same guide lists Bedrock simulation distance as 4–12 chunks depending on device, with a default of 4. For Realms, it describes a typical maximum render distance of 20 chunks; a Realm can differ from a local world.

How to find your smoothest setting
- Begin with the render-distance setting currently available on the device and edition you actually play. Do not treat the Bedrock ranges above as Java specifications.
- Play in the world and situation where you notice performance problems. Lower render distance by a few available steps and compare how smooth play feels.
- If you want to retain longer sightlines, also try reducing particle density or turning off Vibrant Visuals. Microsoft’s creator guidance identifies these as comparatively high-effort visual effects.
- In Bedrock, consider simulation distance separately if active gameplay processing is also contributing to load. Reduce it only if you are comfortable with game activity being processed over a smaller radius.
- For multiplayer, account for the server limit. Microsoft Learn says the effective distance is the lesser of the client’s render setting and the server’s
view-distance; raising the client setting cannot make the server send a greater distance.
There is no official cross-hardware benchmark in the cited documentation that maps a particular chunk count to a guaranteed frame rate. Your best setting is therefore the highest one that remains smooth in your own play conditions.
