That means a Switch can have up to eight distinct linked Nintendo Accounts—but you cannot link the same Nintendo Account to two users on that console.
How the Switch user and account limits work
A Switch user is a profile on the console, where save data is managed. A Nintendo Account is a separate online account used for features and services such as the eShop. Nintendo recommends creating a user for each person sharing a console and allows up to eight users. Nintendo Switch Support
Nintendo’s account guidance says the same Nintendo Account cannot be linked to multiple users on one console. If you link accounts for all eight users, each must be a different Nintendo Account. Nintendo Account Support
Can two users on one Switch use the same Nintendo Account?
No. Each user on that Switch needs a separate Nintendo Account if you want to link an account to each profile. Nintendo’s rule applies to multiple users on the same console; it does not mean an account can only be used on one console. Nintendo allows an account to be linked to a user on multiple consoles, though using downloads, save data, and other console-specific features across systems can involve separate steps. Is the eight-account family group the same limit?
No. The Switch’s limit is up to eight users on one console. Separately, a Nintendo Account family group can include up to eight Nintendo Accounts, including child accounts. Sharing a console does not automatically place its users in the same family group. Nintendo Switch Online Family Membership is available to members of a family group; simply having profiles on the same Switch does not make them group members. What to check before linking or deleting a user
- Confirm the account before linking. Nintendo says a linked user cannot be relinked to a different Nintendo Account. Nintendo Account Support
- Do not delete a user to switch accounts without considering the saves. Deleting a user removes its save data from the console, and Nintendo says the deleted user cannot be restored. Nintendo Switch Support
- Keep account details in mind when sharing the console. eShop balance, registered payment details, downloadable purchase history, and Nintendo Switch Online status are managed per Nintendo Account; they are not shared just because users are on the same device. Nintendo Account Support
- Check service requirements separately. Online play and other internet features require the relevant Nintendo Account; online play also requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online subscription where applicable to the game or service. Nintendo Account Support
