Short answer: the original disc PS5 is rated for up to 350 W and the launch Digital Edition for 340 W, but that is the power supply’s rated capacity—not what the console normally consumes. Sony’s cited tests put recent PS5 models and PS5 Pro at roughly 214–219 W during tested game play. Rest Mode readings range from about 0.30 W to 4.71 W depending on enabled features.

What does the PS5’s 350 W rating mean?

Watts can describe either a device’s capacity or its real-time power draw. Sony listed the launch disc PS5 at 350 W maximum rated power and the launch Digital Edition at 340 W. Those figures describe the supply rating, not a steady electricity draw. Sony’s launch specifications and the CFI-1118A manual provide those ratings.

For electricity use or backup-power planning, the useful number is the console’s actual AC draw at the wall. It includes losses as power is converted inside the console. A teardown by iFixit identified a 350 W internal supply and reported about 200 W under its own tested full-load conditions; that is a teardown result, not a universal Sony maximum. See iFixit’s PS5 teardown.

PS5 power use by model and activity

Sony’s energy-efficiency page reports measurements by model and configuration. Its gaming figures are averages from tests of three PS5 games, not guaranteed readings for every title, scene, or console revision. The page does not establish one figure that applies to every PS5 ever sold.

These activity figures are from Sony’s PlayStation energy-efficiency measurements. Model numbers and HD/UHD configurations matter; check the model number on your console rather than assuming every Slim, Digital Edition, or Pro has identical readings. Sony’s tested gaming averages do not show a dramatic gap between the cited recent standard models and PS5 Pro.

Why readings vary

A game’s workload, frame-rate mode, disc activity, downloads, installation, and connected USB devices can change a meter reading. A reading during a download or installation is not necessarily representative of steady gameplay. Rest Mode is also a set of power-saving configurations, not a single fixed draw: USB charging, internet access, wake features, and connected accessories can increase consumption.

The PS5 figure also does not include your television or monitor. Add the display’s measured or specified draw, plus any soundbar, speakers, router, external drive, or charger, to estimate the whole setup. Display use varies with size, panel, brightness, refresh rate, and HDR settings, so there is no useful universal TV wattage.

Convert watts into electricity use and cost

Electricity use is billed in kilowatt-hours (kWh), not watts. Multiply watts by hours, then divide by 1,000. To estimate cost, multiply the kWh by your electricity price per kWh:

Cost = watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used × electricity price per kWh

  • At 200 W, one hour uses 0.20 kWh; at 220 W, it uses 0.22 kWh.
  • At 220 W for three hours, the console uses about 0.66 kWh.
  • At an illustrative rate of $0.20/kWh, that three-hour session costs about $0.13 for the PS5 alone. Your rate and the display or accessories will change the total.

A watt is a rate of power use; a watt-hour measures energy over time. For planning from Sony’s cited tests, about 220 W is a practical estimate for the console during demanding gameplay, not a hard maximum.

Measure your own PS5 at the wall

A plug-in watt meter measures the console’s AC input directly. Console software generally does not provide the same direct wall-draw measurement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Plug a reputable plug-in watt meter into the wall outlet, then connect the PS5’s AC cable to the meter.
  2. Record the reading with the console fully powered off, in Rest Mode, and at the home menu.
  3. For gaming, load a demanding game, enter active play, and wait several minutes for the reading to stabilize before recording it.
  4. If relevant, take a separate reading during DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Blu-ray playback.
  5. Repeat measurements under the same conditions. Measure the PS5-plus-display setup separately if you are sizing backup power.

Note the model number, activity, Rest Mode settings, and connected accessories alongside readings. A measurement during downloads or installation describes that workload, not a general gaming average.

Choose a UPS for the complete setup

Do not choose a UPS solely because the original disc PS5 has a 350 W supply rating. Base the choice on the measured combined load and the backup time you need. Check the UPS’s continuous output in watts; its VA rating alone is not enough because VA and watts are related but not interchangeable.

  • Add the PS5, display, and any other equipment you intend to plug into battery-backed outlets.
  • Choose continuous watt output with sensible headroom above that combined load, and check the UPS’s surge capability.
  • Use the manufacturer’s runtime information at a comparable load. Runtime depends on battery capacity and total draw; do not assume a particular model will provide a particular duration without matching-load data.
  • Consider automatic voltage regulation, outlet count, battery replacement availability, alarms, and warranty.
  • A pure sine-wave output is a reasonable compatibility preference for modern electronics, but the cited information does not establish that every PS5 requires it. Follow the UPS maker’s compatibility guidance.

A UPS is usually most useful for bridging a short interruption so you can save and shut down safely, rather than continuing to game through a long outage.

Choose a portable power station

Two separate specifications matter: continuous AC output determines whether the station can run the load, while battery capacity in watt-hours helps determine how long it can run. A unit with ample battery capacity can still fail to power a setup if its AC output rating is too low.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For a PS5 alone, at least 300 W of continuous AC output may cover typical gameplay draw, but leaves less headroom for accessories and transient loads.
  • For a PS5 plus display and peripherals, 500 W or more of continuous output offers more practical margin; check the measured combined load and the station’s surge rating.
  • Estimate runtime using: hours ≈ battery watt-hours × inverter efficiency ÷ total watts. Actual usable energy is lower than the battery’s headline capacity because of inverter losses and reserve capacity.
  • Also check waveform, fan noise, warranty, battery policy, and pass-through or UPS behavior if those features matter to your setup.

Output power, battery capacity, surge capability, and inverter losses are different limits. A station should not be selected by watt-hours alone.

Surge protector or battery backup?

A surge protector does not provide battery power, so it will not keep the PS5 running during an outage. It can protect against some transient voltage events, but no generic joule rating guarantees protection from lightning or every power disturbance. Use reputable, safety-certified equipment and do not daisy-chain surge protectors or UPS units.

For Sony’s broader discussion of PS5 energy efficiency and reduced accessory power features on slim and Pro models, see its energy-efficiency overview and adaptive-charging explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a 300 W UPS run a PS5?

It may cover the console’s typical gaming draw, but only if its continuous watt output is sufficient for the console and any other connected equipment. Check the combined measured load, headroom, and the UPS’s watt rating—not its VA number alone.

Does the TV count when sizing a UPS or power station?

Yes. Add the display’s draw and any other connected equipment to the PS5’s load. A backup device sized for the console alone may be overloaded by the complete setup.

Does a PS5 Pro use more power than a standard PS5?

Sony’s cited tested gaming averages are about 215–216 W for PS5 Pro and about 213–216 W for the listed recent standard models. These are test averages, not universal figures for every game or revision.

Does a surge protector keep a PS5 on during an outage?

No. A surge protector does not provide battery backup; use a UPS or power station if you need power during an outage.

Does a PS5 draw power when turned off?

The cited Sony figures describe Rest Mode settings, not a universal fully powered-off reading for every model. For your console’s fully powered-off draw, measure it with a plug-in watt meter.
