MIT and Microsoft researchers’ Ekho system tackles a specific cloud-gaming problem: video and related audio can reach separate devices over networks with different delays. Ekho adds faint acoustic timing markers to game audio, detects them in sound captured by a microphone, and uses the resulting delay estimate to adjust audio playback. The system was evaluated in a 2023 research paper; the reported results are not a guarantee for consumer services.
Why cloud gaming audio and video can drift apart
A cloud game may send video and audio to a screen while a controller microphone or controller-connected headset forms another endpoint. If the streams travel over different network paths, they can arrive at different times. That mismatch is called inter-stream delay: it concerns how well related media stays synchronized, not how quickly a button press reaches the game or how much overall latency the service has.
Measuring the gap through network timing alone can be difficult. Ekho’s authors explain that room audio is also an imperfect reference because background noise and audio compression can obscure timing. Their system instead puts a known acoustic reference into the game audio and listens for it after playback.
How Ekho measures and corrects the delay
1. Add faint markers to game audio
Before streaming, Ekho inserts very low-volume pseudo-noise sequences into the audio. These markers provide a recognizable timing signal. MIT News reports that participants in a user study could not hear them; that finding applies to the study, not necessarily every listener, device, or listening condition. MIT News’ account of the study describes the approach for general readers.

2. Listen for the markers at the player’s end
Audio played in the room is captured by a microphone and sent back. Ekho looks for the known marker sequences in that recording, despite the noise and compression that can affect ordinary room audio. The paper also considers a configuration in which screen audio is muted and the player uses a controller-connected headset; it discusses constant-amplitude markers for that video-to-audio synchronization case. This is a design described and evaluated by the researchers, not a claim that ordinary headsets or controllers already support Ekho.
3. Estimate the gap and adjust playback
The system has two parts: Ekho-Estimator detects the markers and calculates inter-stream delay; Ekho-Compensator uses that estimate to alter the audio sent by the server. Depending on the mismatch, it can skip a few milliseconds of sound or insert a few milliseconds of silence. These corrections target synchronization between streams, rather than cloud gaming’s overall latency.

The method and system design are detailed in the Ekho paper hosted by Microsoft Research, “Ekho: Synchronizing Cloud Gaming Media Across Multiple Endpoints,” by Pouya Hamadanian, Doug Gallatin, Mohammad Alizadeh, and Krishna Chintalapudi. ACM SIGCOMM published the work in 2023. The MIT repository lists the final published version and an issue date of September 10, 2023; the MIT DSpace record provides the publication metadata.
What the paper’s results show—and what they do not
In the authors’ end-to-end tests over Wi-Fi and cellular links, which included frequent packet loss and playback disruptions, Ekho kept inter-stream delay below 10 milliseconds for 86.8% of tested session time. The paper describes that threshold as human-imperceptible. In the same test context, delay exceeded 50 milliseconds throughout without Ekho. The authors also report sub-millisecond accuracy for estimating inter-stream delay. That is the estimator’s accuracy, not a claim that the system kept streams below one millisecond of delay.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
These figures describe the paper’s evaluation, not a service-level promise. The paper compares Ekho with other tested methods and reports those methods did not get below 50 milliseconds under the evaluated conditions; that result should not be generalized to all synchronization techniques or networks.
Ekho is published research, not a documented feature of a named cloud gaming service. The sources describe potential applications beyond gaming, including AR and VR, but do not establish a commercial deployment there either. They also do not show that buying a generic gaming headset or controller adds Ekho or reproduces its results. A microphone is part of the evaluated endpoint setup, but hardware alone does not implement the marker detection, delay estimation, or server-side compensation.

Does Ekho remove cloud gaming lag?
No. Ekho addresses the timing difference between related media streams delivered to separate endpoints. It does not claim to reduce controller-input-to-screen delay, eliminate network latency, or make every part of a cloud gaming session faster. Its contribution is narrower: use an acoustic timing reference to help audio and video arrive in sync despite unequal delays.
