It is not the same as a DFA, an outright assignment or a waiver claim: each move has different roster effects, timing rules and player rights.
What does it mean when a player is optioned?
The club assigns the player to a minor-league team, taking him off the active roster while keeping him on the 40-man roster. Because the player remains on the 40-man, the club does not have to expose him to waivers just to make this move. MLB’s glossary entry on options describes the process.
An option is generally charged as an option year when the assignment lasts at least 20 days during a season. Several trips to the Minors in the same season normally use only one option year, not one for every trip. The number of trips is separately limited: MLB says that after a player has been optioned five times in a season, sending him down again requires outright assignment waivers.
How many options does an MLB player have?
Players on the 40-man roster generally receive three option years. A fourth may be available in certain circumstances to a player who has used the first three but has fewer than five full seasons under MLB’s counting rules, which include Major and Minor League time. Option years do not have to be consecutive. Eligibility can turn on a player’s individual record, so the club’s roster determination matters.

Having an option year available does not mean the club can always send the player down without his consent. A player with more than five years of Major League service must consent to an option, according to MLB’s glossary.
How long must a player stay in the Minors?
After an option, a position player generally must remain in the Minors for at least 10 days before recall. Pitchers and two-way players generally have a 15-day minimum. MLB lists exceptions when the player is recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader or to replace a player placed on the injured list. These waiting periods apply to recall timing; they are separate from the 20-day threshold used to determine whether an option year is charged.

What happens when a player has no options left?
A club cannot ordinarily use another standard option once the player has exhausted his available option years. To remove him from the 40-man roster, it may designate him for assignment (DFA), then trade him or place him on waivers. This is not an automatic minor-league assignment: waivers give other clubs an opportunity to claim the player, and service-time or prior-outright rights may affect what happens if he clears.
What DFA means
DFA means “designated for assignment.” The move removes the player from the 40-man roster while the club resolves his status. MLB says the club has seven days to trade him or place him on outright or unconditional release waivers. A DFA is therefore a roster status and a process, not a synonym for being sent to the Minors.

What happens on waivers
If another club claims the player, the claiming club adds him to its 40-man roster. Depending on his remaining options, it may put him on its active roster or option him to the Minors. If he clears outright waivers, the original club may assign him to the Minors, subject to his rights.
MLB says a player with more than five years of Major League service may reject an outright assignment to the Minors. A player with more than three years of service, or one who has previously been outrighted, may reject an outright assignment and choose free agency. Which rights apply depends on the player’s circumstances; not every DFA ends in an outright assignment.

How the 26-man and 40-man rosters differ
The active roster is the group eligible to play for the club at that point in the season. The 40-man roster is the larger roster from which the active roster is drawn, and it also includes some players in the Minors and players on certain injured or leave lists. A player must be on the 40-man roster to join the active roster.
If the 40-man roster is full, a club must create a spot before adding a player to it. MLB lists possible routes including a trade, release, DFA or transfer to the 60-day injured list. An option does not itself open a 40-man spot because the optioned player remains on that roster.

How active-roster limits change during the season
MLB’s glossary currently describes a 26-player active roster through August 31, a 28-player roster from September 1 through the end of the regular season, and a 26-player roster in the postseason. A club may also carry a 27th player for a doubleheader; that player returns to the Minors after the game. These limits are season-sensitive and should be checked against MLB’s current roster rules for the season in question. See MLB’s active roster glossary.
How to tell which roster move applies
When a player leaves the active roster, the label of the transaction—and the player’s status—determine what can happen next.
| Move | Leaves active roster? | Leaves 40-man roster? | Key consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Option | Yes | No | Generally uses an option year if the assignment lasts at least 20 days; recall waiting periods usually apply. |
| DFA | Yes | Yes | Club has seven days to trade the player or place him on waivers. |
| Outright assignment | Yes, if on the active roster | Yes | Usually follows cleared outright waivers; player rights may allow rejection or free agency. |
| Waiver claim | Depends on the claiming club’s choice | Player joins claiming club’s 40-man roster | Claiming club may use an available option or place the player on its active roster. |
Why Rule 5 protection matters in the offseason
Rule 5 roster protection is a separate issue from optioning a player during the season. MLB says players signed at age 18 or younger generally must be added to the 40-man roster within five seasons, while players signed at age 19 or older generally must be protected within four. A Rule 5 selection goes directly onto the selecting club’s 26-man roster and comes with restrictions on removing the player. See MLB’s Rule 5 Draft glossary.
