How MLB Teams Choose a Game 1 Playoff Starter

MLB teams choose an eligible, available Game 1 starter based on their plan for the whole series. The ace does not automatically have to open.

MLB does not require a team to start its ace—or its best regular-season pitcher—in Game 1 of the playoffs. The club chooses an eligible, available pitcher and builds the decision around its plan for the entire series: the format, rotation sequence, rest, workload and the role it wants the starter to fill.

Who is allowed to start?

Eligibility comes before preference. MLB’s 2026 postseason roster explainer describes a 26-player roster for each series and the eligibility framework, including a restricted process for replacing an injured player. The 2024 Major League Rules text says clubs submit an active roster of 25 to 26 eligible players before each postseason series; Rule 41 also addresses eligibility and players being physically able to perform during the series.

These rules determine who can be considered, not who must start. Exact eligibility language can change, so check the rulebook for the season in question if a particular player’s status is at issue.

Why the whole series matters

A Game 1 starter’s rest and next possible start affect how the rest of the rotation lines up. The choice may depend on whether the series is best-of-three, best-of-five or best-of-seven, and on which pitchers the club wants available for later games. There is no single rotation pattern required across teams.

A 2025 example: the Dodgers’ Wild Card plan

In its September 30, 2025 preview, MLB reported that the Dodgers expected a four-man postseason rotation of Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow. For that best-of-three Wild Card Series, the plan was Snell and Yamamoto for the first two games, with Ohtani for a possible Game 3. It is an example of one club’s sequencing in one season, not a template for other teams.

How rest, workload and role can shape the choice

Teams weigh who is ready to pitch, how much rest candidates have, and how a start affects the remaining schedule. They may also value a starter expected to work deep into a game, or arrange the rotation to give other pitchers more rest. Those are club-specific considerations, not a league-wide formula.

A 2025 example: balancing rest and sequence

ESPN reported on October 12, 2025, that the Dodgers chose Snell for NLCS Game 1 and were not concerned about pitching Ohtani before a day off; the report described the club as preferring to maximize rest for other starters. This illustrates a team-specific scheduling decision, not a rule for how every postseason rotation is set.

How to compare two candidates for a specific Game 1

For a particular matchup, the useful questions are practical rather than a search for a universal ranking:

The cited reporting shows rest, expected length and sequencing being discussed, but does not establish a common priority order for these factors across MLB clubs.

What the rules do—and do not—say

Major League Rule 40 says postseason games use the playing rules governing the championship season, subject to the stated exception for Rule 17(a) of the Official Baseball Rules. Rule 41 covers postseason eligibility and the active roster submitted for each series. Neither the roster guidance nor the located Rule 40–41 text assigns Game 1 to a named role such as “ace” or sets a performance threshold for the starter. That conclusion describes the scope of those cited materials; an individual player’s availability can still be affected by applicable rules or circumstances.
