How Much Bandwidth Do You Need for Reliable Live Streaming?

Reliable streaming needs sustained upload capacity above your encoder bitrate. Compare platform recommendations, calculate headroom, and test for network instability.

For reliable live streaming, your sustained upload capacity needs to exceed your encoder’s configured bitrate. Twitch’s general guidance is to leave 30% headroom: a 6 Mbps stream therefore calls for about 7.8 Mbps of sustained upload capacity. That margin is a planning guide, not a guarantee; choose settings for your platform and verify the connection with a representative test.

Start with the stream’s upload bitrate

The encoder’s configured bitrate is the main load your streaming connection must carry. Compare it with stable upload capacity—not download speed—and leave room for normal variation. Twitch recommends upload speed equal to the configured bitrate plus 30% as a general practice (Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines). For example, 6 Mbps multiplied by 1.3 is 7.8 Mbps.

That arithmetic is a useful starting point, not a universal platform requirement or promise of stability. Your target depends on destination, resolution, frame rate and codec, as well as whether the computer and encoder can sustain the settings. The route to the selected ingest server matters too: a headline speed-test result does not establish that the connection will remain steady during a broadcast.

Use the destination’s bitrate guidance

YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, vary by resolution and frame rate. Use the settings for your intended output rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream.

Output YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 30 Mbps
4K at 60 fps 35 Mbps

These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or encoder will work. YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 using minimum and maximum ranges rather than the same H.264 recommendation column; check its live encoder settings for the codec you plan to use.

Is 10 Mbps upload enough?

It may be enough for some lower-bitrate settings, but it is below YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30 (10 Mbps before any headroom) and 1080p60 (12 Mbps). It also leaves no margin at a bitrate equal to the measured upload rate. Whether it works depends on sustained available capacity and the chosen platform settings; a single speed test cannot confirm reliability.

What upload speed do I need for 1080p60?

For YouTube H.264 at 1080p60, YouTube recommends a 12 Mbps stream bitrate. Twitch’s general 30% planning margin applied to that bitrate would suggest 15.6 Mbps of sustained upload capacity, but that is an illustrative calculation—not a YouTube requirement. Test your actual setup and check stream-health indicators.

Test the connection before going live

  1. Check upload speed. Run a speed test on the computer and connection you intend to stream from. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, but a speed test is only a snapshot, not proof of sustained stability.
  2. Choose the platform’s recommended bitrate. Set resolution, frame rate and codec first, then use the applicable platform guidance. Confirm the encoder can maintain those settings.
  3. Run a representative test stream. Include the motion and audio expected in the actual broadcast. A static screen may not expose the same encoding load as gameplay or other fast-moving content.
  4. Watch stream health. Monitor the platform and encoder indicators during the test and broadcast. YouTube recommends pre-stream testing and live stream-health monitoring.

Diagnose dropped frames and disconnections

OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server (OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting). A sufficient nominal speed does not rule out a problem on that route.

  • Frames drop or the stream disconnects: Check encoder and platform health indicators, confirm the configured bitrate is appropriate, and investigate the connection to the ingest server. Twitch points streamers to Twitch Inspector for connection analysis.
  • Wi-Fi may be unstable: If possible, compare a test over wired Ethernet with one over Wi-Fi. A cable can help identify a local wireless problem, but it cannot increase the capacity of your ISP plan and is not a guaranteed fix.
  • Speed looks adequate but problems persist: Re-test during representative use, check whether other activity is competing for upload capacity, and verify the route and stream-health status. Household contention is a practical factor, not a universal fixed deduction.
  • The chosen output is demanding: Reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a supported recommendation, then test again. Twitch notes that higher resolution requires higher bitrate and higher frame rates require more encoding power; it advises CBR where possible.
