It depends on whether you mean watching a 1080p video or broadcasting one. For playback, Netflix recommends a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps, while Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download speed for watching at 1080p60. For a YouTube Live broadcast, the recommended outgoing encoder bitrate is 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60 with AV1/H.265; with H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps and 17 Mbps, respectively. Those are platform-specific recommendations, not guarantees or universal broadband-plan requirements.
First, distinguish watching from broadcasting
When you watch a stream, the video comes down to your device, so download speed is the relevant direction. When you broadcast, your encoder sends video out to the platform, so upload speed is the relevant direction. A download-speed result does not tell you whether your upload can carry a live broadcast, or vice versa.
The numbers below describe different activities and should not be treated as interchangeable: playback recommendations are connection speeds, while YouTube’s live figures are recommended encoder bitrates.
Bandwidth for watching 1080p video
Netflix playback
Netflix recommends a stable internet connection of 5 Mbps or higher for Full HD (1080p) playback. Its guidance is specific to Netflix; it is not a minimum that applies to every streaming service. Netflix also lists 3 Mbps or higher for 720p and 15 Mbps or higher for 4K. Netflix’s recommended internet speeds notes that several factors can affect video quality.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Twitch playback
For watching Twitch at 1080p60, Twitch recommends 7–12 Mbps or higher download speed. This is a viewer-side recommendation for that resolution and frame rate, not a universal threshold for all 1080p streams. Twitch explains: “When watching Twitch, your download speed determines video quality.” Twitch playback troubleshooting also notes that low download speed can cause playback problems even if your upload speed is high.
Upload bandwidth for broadcasting live in 1080p
For a live broadcast, compare your actual upload capacity with the encoder bitrate recommended for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s recommendations for 1080p are:

| Output | AV1/H.265 recommended encoder bitrate | H.264 recommended encoder bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These values are YouTube’s recommended outgoing encoder settings, not a promise that a connection at the same measured speed will deliver a stable stream. YouTube advises broadcasters to “run a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for its guidance.
How to decide which number applies to you
- If you are watching: check the download speed you actually receive, then use the recommendation for the service and playback mode you care about. Netflix’s 1080p guidance is 5 Mbps or higher; Twitch’s 1080p60 guidance is 7–12 Mbps or higher.
- If you are broadcasting: check actual upload speed and compare it with YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your frame rate and codec. Do not use a download result as a substitute.
- Allow for real household use: other people or devices using the connection can compete for capacity, and measured speed can vary. The platforms do not establish a universal extra safety margin, so avoid treating any single speed-test result as a guarantee.
- Choose settings your setup can sustain: Twitch notes that higher resolution needs higher bitrate and higher frame rate needs more encoding power. Select settings based on both your internet connection and computer hardware. Twitch’s broadcasting guidelines discuss those trade-offs.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream live around the clock, StreamNeo can run the uploaded video from the cloud rather than relying on a computer or home connection staying on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
