For a 24/7 YouTube stream, size a VPS for sustained outbound capacity above your encoder’s upload bitrate, and make sure its monthly transfer allowance covers the stream. As a planning estimate, every 1 Mbps sent continuously uses about 10.8 GB over 30 days, before overhead and other server traffic. A 10 Mbps stream therefore needs roughly 108 GB for the month, plus a margin.
Throughput and monthly transfer are different requirements
Sustained outbound throughput
Your VPS must continuously send the stream to YouTube at the encoder’s configured bitrate. Allow room for protocol overhead and fluctuations, then test the actual VPS route: a provider’s advertised port speed alone does not establish reliable sustained upload performance. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom multiplier for VPS streams.
Monthly outbound transfer
The same stream also consumes data against the VPS plan’s monthly outbound allowance. Estimate usage from bitrate, then account for overhead, reconnects, background traffic, and the provider’s measurement rules.
Viewer delivery is not VPS upload
The VPS sends the source stream to YouTube; YouTube transcodes it into multiple output formats for viewers. Consequently, the VPS’s source upload is not multiplied by the number of people watching. YouTube’s live encoder guidance explains the transcoding process.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Estimate transfer from the stream bitrate
For a constant bitrate over a 30-day month, use this calculation:
Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 = decimal GB per month

That works out to approximately 10.8 decimal GB per month per 1 Mbps. These are arithmetic estimates, not YouTube or VPS-provider transfer figures; actual billable usage can differ because of overhead, restarts, background traffic, and provider measurement conventions.
| H.264 stream format | YouTube recommended bitrate | Approximate transfer over 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 151.2 GB |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 183.6 GB |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed H.264 formats, not a universal setting for every encoder or codec. YouTube’s table lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC—for example, 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Check the current YouTube table and use the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Check a VPS plan before choosing it
- Choose the stream format. Set the intended resolution, frame rate, and codec, then select the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
- Estimate monthly data. Multiply the selected bitrate by approximately 10.8 GB per Mbps for a 30-day estimate. Add room for overhead and other server traffic.
- Confirm sustained upload. Check that the specific VPS, region, and route can maintain the target upload rate; do not rely on a headline port speed alone.
- Read the plan’s transfer terms. Verify the outbound quota, how usage is measured, whether transfer is pooled or per instance, and what happens at the limit—such as overage charges or throttling. Provider rules differ: DigitalOcean documents pooled outbound Droplet transfer quotas and overage billing, while Amazon Lightsail documents instance allowances and charges for excess outbound transfer. These are examples, not a substitute for checking the current terms of your chosen plan.
- Configure and test the stream. Use YouTube-supported RTMP or RTMPS ingestion settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS for encrypted streaming. Test upload speed and stream health with audio and motion similar to the content you will run. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Test and monitor for a real 24/7 run
A speed test is a useful check, but a long-running stream also needs observation during operation. YouTube recommends testing the upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Run a representative test, then watch for unstable upload or stream-health warnings once the VPS is sending continuously. If performance is inconsistent, check the VPS route and sustained egress rather than assuming that the advertised link speed guarantees the configured bitrate.
