How Much Data Does a 24/7 1080p Rain Stream Use per Month?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 24/7 1080p live broadcast uses about 3,240 GB (3.24 decimal TB) in a 30-day month at YouTube’s recommended 10 Mbps H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps. At the recommended 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, it uses about 3,888 GB (3.89 decimal TB). Those are estimates of the broadcaster’s outgoing video payload—not the data a viewer uses to watch the stream.

Broadcasting and watching are different data costs

The phrase “data does a stream use” can mean either the data sent by the channel owner to YouTube or the data downloaded by someone watching. These are different quantities: YouTube transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers, so the broadcaster’s upload bitrate does not tell you how much every viewer will use.

  • Broadcasting: estimate the channel’s outgoing data from its encoder bitrate and how long it streams.
  • Watching: use the streaming service’s delivered-data figure, if it publishes one. A viewer’s usage is not necessarily the same as the broadcast’s upload.

Monthly estimates for a continuous 30-day stream

A 30-day month contains 720 hours (24 × 30). YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 ingest bitrates for these 1080p frame rates. The table applies those bitrate recommendations to 720 hours; the broadcast figures are calculated estimates, while the Netflix figure is the service’s published HD usage basis.

Scenario Reference and basis 30-day estimate
Broadcast at 1080p30 YouTube recommended H.264 ingest bitrate: 10 Mbps 3,240 GB / 3.24 decimal TB
Broadcast at 1080p60 YouTube recommended H.264 ingest bitrate: 12 Mbps 3,888 GB / 3.89 decimal TB
Watching HD on Netflix Netflix reports up to 3 GB per hour per device for HD Up to 2,160 GB / 2.16 decimal TB

The YouTube settings and transcoding explanation are in YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance. Netflix’s per-device figure is described in its data-usage guidance. The Netflix estimate is not a universal measurement for every 1080p rain stream.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How the estimate is calculated

For decimal gigabytes, use:

GB = bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45

The conversion accounts for 3,600 seconds per hour, 8 bits per byte and 1,000 megabytes per decimal gigabyte. For example, 10 Mbps × 720 hours × 0.45 = 3,240 GB. This assumes the stream runs continuously at the stated bitrate for the full month.

These are payload estimates. They omit network protocol overhead and do not include other household or channel traffic. Actual usage can differ if the encoder’s bitrate varies or the stream is not live for all 720 hours. Also, decimal TB here means 1,000 GB; storage systems that report binary units may display a different-looking number for the same data volume.

Why “1080p” alone does not determine monthly data

Resolution describes the video’s pixel dimensions, not a fixed bitrate. The estimate changes with bitrate and duration; frame rate also matters because YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate differs between 1080p30 and 1080p60. A rain scene does not have a separate official monthly usage figure in the cited guidance, so there is no substantiated rain-specific average to substitute for the bitrate calculation.

For a viewer’s connection planning, Netflix recommends a stable 5 Mbps or higher connection for 1080p Full HD. That is a recommended connection speed, not a claim that playback continuously consumes exactly 5 Mbps. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds; its published HD data-usage figure is the separate basis used in the table.

Keeping a YouTube rain stream online without a home PC

If your concern is the outgoing connection at the broadcaster’s location, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. You upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once and go live; the cloud loops the video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. This changes where the continuous stream is sent from; the bitrate arithmetic above is not a statement of StreamNeo’s or any home internet plan’s total data charges.

StreamNeo is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed. Learn more at StreamNeo. The first day is free with no card; start at StreamNeo registration.
