Rockstar has not disclosed how much Grand Theft Auto VI cost to develop. The widely repeated figure of up to $1.5 billion is an estimate attributed to unnamed industry analysts—not a budget confirmed by Rockstar or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Without an official figure and comparable accounting, it is not established that GTA 6 will be the most expensive game ever made.
Did Rockstar confirm the GTA 6 budget?
No. GameSpot reports that neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has disclosed a production-budget figure. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has described the game as expensive, but has not attached a number to it. GameSpot’s report also reproduces Zelnick’s description of the company’s approach: “We try to give them unlimited financial, creative human resources and then they aim to deliver perfection.” That statement describes a management philosophy, not the game’s cost.
Where did the $1.5 billion figure come from?
GameSpot says the figure came from unnamed industry analysts quoted by Business Insider, who estimated the budget could reach $1.5 billion. It is a reported outside estimate, passed along by GameSpot—not a Rockstar or Take-Two disclosure. GameSpot’s account does not identify the analysts or establish how they calculated the figure.
A widely repeated range of $1 billion to $2 billion is likewise described as unverified in a reference compilation. Repetition of a number does not turn it into a confirmed budget.

Is GTA 6 the most expensive game ever?
That claim is not established. GTA 6’s actual budget is unknown, and published game-budget figures may count different things. A development-only estimate is not directly comparable to a total that also includes marketing, distribution, licensing, or post-launch support. Ongoing content costs and one-time production costs are not necessarily measured on the same basis either.
For context, GamesRadar reports that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas had a reported budget of about $10 million, citing a December 2004 Wall Street Journal report and a contemporary quote attributed to then-Take-Two president Paul Eibeler. That historical figure is useful context, but it is not an audited, like-for-like comparison with any GTA 6 estimate. GamesRadar’s comparison also notes that San Andreas had sold more than 12 million copies about 16 months after its October 2004 launch. Its calculation of about $600 million applies an assumed $50 price to those sales; it is an illustrative gross-sales figure, not publisher receipts, profit, or development cost.

What is confirmed about GTA 6’s release?
Take-Two announced pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI and stated that it will launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two’s announcement gives those platforms and date; Rockstar’s official GTA VI page also lists November 19, 2026. Neither release information nor pre-orders confirm a development budget.
