You must also account for the Mumbai-region data-transfer allowance, outbound overage, the stream’s bitrate, and any currency conversion or taxes. As a current AWS example, Linux Lightsail bundles start at USD 5 per month, but Mumbai receives half the headline transfer allowance. At a constant 3 Mbps, a 30-day stream sends about 972 GB before overhead—already close to the Mumbai allowance associated with the smallest example bundle.
What a 24/7 VPS stream costs in practice
A VPS provider charges for the virtual server; a continuous stream also sends video data out to viewers and YouTube. Compare the actual region’s included transfer with your estimated monthly output, then account for any outbound overage. The published AWS prices below are USD prices checked on 2026-10-03, not a guaranteed final rupee bill. AWS does not provide an individualized INR total here, so conversion and applicable taxes may affect what you pay.
Amazon Lightsail lists these general Linux/Unix bundles. AWS documentation says Mumbai plans receive half the transfer allowance shown for other regions, and excess outbound transfer is billable. Check the current Mumbai plan and overage rate before purchase rather than treating the general allowance as the India allowance.

How much bandwidth does a 24/7 stream use?
For a constant encoded bitrate, a useful estimate in decimal gigabytes is: monthly GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 × days. This follows from 1 Mbps equalling 0.125 MB/s and 86,400 seconds per day. It excludes protocol/container overhead and any other outbound traffic, so leave headroom.

These are arithmetic estimates, not provider statistics. A 1 TB headline allowance might appear sufficient for a 3 Mbps stream, but it is not safe to assume that figure applies in Mumbai or that the full allowance is available for this stream alone. Actual use varies with bitrate, protocol overhead, other egress, and billing-period length.

Choose a bitrate before choosing a VPS
Bitrate largely determines monthly transfer use. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; it also recommends constant bitrate, keyframes every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart), and RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. The recommendations are general encoder settings, not a requirement that every devotional program use those exact resolutions or rates. A mostly static image with devotional audio may be acceptable at a lower resolution and bitrate, but judge picture quality and stream health with an actual test rather than assuming a minimum.
YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. Use the codec and settings your encoder supports, and make sure the outgoing stream is compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest configuration. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance before configuring a production stream.

Will the VPS only loop a file, or encode it?
The CPU requirement depends on what the server does. Sending an already encoded file repeatedly is a different workload from decoding and re-encoding video in real time. The latter can demand more CPU; a plan’s vCPU count alone does not establish that it will encode reliably at your chosen settings.
- Pre-encoded file: Prefer a workflow that loops or stream-copies the prepared media without transcoding when that meets your needs. Confirm the output remains valid and monitor CPU and stream health.
- Real-time encoding: Test the exact source, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and encoder on the candidate instance. Watch CPU load and dropped frames under sustained operation before relying on it.
- Static visual with audio: A modest video setting may suffice if the picture is acceptable, but test the real program and confirm the stream remains healthy.
A VPS is not itself an uninterrupted YouTube feed. The process can stop, the server can encounter problems, or YouTube can drop the ingest. Use process supervision and alerts if you need to notice a stopped encoder and recover it promptly.

Set up a self-managed VPS workflow
The exact commands depend on the operating system, encoder, file format, and whether you are re-encoding. The essential sequence is to prepare compatible media, configure the YouTube live event and ingest credentials, run a persistent loop, and verify the feed before leaving it unattended.
- Confirm channel readiness and recording rights. Check that the channel can go live and that you have permission for every recording and its use in a livestream. A devotional or religious recording is not automatically free to rebroadcast. Get current guidance from YouTube and the relevant rights owners; the available topic-specific guide flags these as prerequisites but is not a legal determination.
- Create the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and select the appropriate stream configuration. Copy the stream key and ingest details from YouTube’s live control room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or paste it into a public support post.
- Prepare the VPS in the region you intend to use. Select a Linux plan, verify its current regional transfer allowance and overage rules, and install an encoder or playout tool suitable for your workflow. Keep the media file on the server or another source your process can reliably read.
- Configure output settings. Set the chosen resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, constant bitrate, and keyframe interval. YouTube’s cited H.264 recommendations are 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30, with keyframes every two seconds and no more than four seconds apart. If you choose a lower setting for a static visual, check quality and health during a test.
- Start the loop and verify it in YouTube Studio. Confirm that audio and picture are present, the stream-health indicator is acceptable, and the event is actually live. Test for long enough to expose errors that do not appear immediately.
- Keep it running and recoverable. Run the playout process under a supervisor that can restart it after a process failure, configure alerts, and periodically check both server resource use and YouTube stream health. A restart does not replace checking whether YouTube has accepted the stream again.
- Review transfer use after launch. Compare actual outbound usage with your estimate and the region’s allowance. Increase headroom or change settings if the stream is approaching a billable threshold.

Common cost and reliability mistakes
- Using the worldwide allowance for Mumbai: Apply AWS’s documented half-allowance rule to the relevant general figure, then confirm the current region-specific terms.
- Budgeting only for compute: Estimate continuous outbound traffic from bitrate and days, add headroom, and check the provider’s overage rate. Do not assume excess inbound and outbound traffic have the same billing treatment; AWS says excess outbound transfer is billable.
- Assuming a loop is always CPU-light: Stream-copying prepared media and real-time re-encoding are different workloads. Test the specific workflow on the candidate plan.
- Leaving recovery to chance: A server does not ensure the encoder process or YouTube ingest stays connected. Use supervision, alerts, and stream-health checks.
- Streaming recordings without clearance: Verify rights for the specific livestream use instead of assuming that devotional content is exempt.
