There is no single monthly price: Google Cloud Compute Engine cost depends on the virtual machine, region, disk and network use, while a mini PC’s electricity cost depends on its measured power draw and your local electricity rate. Compare both over the same runtime, then account separately for hardware, internet service, reliability and maintenance.
How to estimate the cost fairly
Use 730 hours as a normalized month (about 30.4 days), not as the length of every calendar month. For each option, state the stream settings and identify which costs are included. A useful comparison separates recurring operating costs from one-time hardware purchases.

Cloud compute alone is not an all-in cloud bill. Google’s Compute Engine pricing page lists rates by machine family and region; choose the actual region and machine type, then verify current prices and applicable charges. The E2 machine-family documentation describes E2 as cost-optimized general-purpose machines, but that does not establish that a particular small VM can sustain your chosen stream workload.

1. Choose a VM that can handle the stream
Specify the machine type, region, operating system if relevant, and encoder settings. Do not assume that the cheapest VM can encode a particular resolution, frame rate or codec: capacity depends on the workload, and the cited machine-family information does not certify an individual VM for continuous streaming.

2. Calculate compute, then add the rest
For a 730-hour estimate, multiply the selected VM’s hourly price by 730. Add persistent disk, expected outbound data transfer and any other resources your configuration uses. Show the compute subtotal separately from the estimated total so readers can see what is—and is not—included. Rates and billing details can vary by region and change over time.
3. Keep the stream’s role in perspective
YouTube receives the configured ingest stream and creates viewer playback formats. Its guidance says: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” The host does not need to generate every viewer rendition; it must reliably send the stream you configure.

Mini PC: calculate electricity from a real measurement
Measure the complete setup under load
A mini PC can run encoder software, but power draw varies by model and workload. Measure the computer at the wall while it runs the intended encoder settings, ideally over a representative period, rather than assigning a generic wattage to all mini PCs. A plug-in power meter can help you obtain the input for the calculation; no particular meter or accuracy claim is established here.
Convert watts into monthly electricity cost
Use: average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × 730 hours = monthly kWh. Multiply that energy use by your electricity price per kWh. As arithmetic illustrations only, 10 W sustained for 730 hours equals 7.3 kWh, and 20 W equals 14.6 kWh. These are hypothetical inputs, not typical mini-PC measurements or predictions.

Show the mini-PC purchase price separately from electricity. If you want a monthly total that includes the hardware, state the purchase price and the period over which you spread it; there is no universal amortization period. Keep internet service visible as a separate cost rather than treating it as free or attributing the entire household connection bill to the stream without explanation.
Stream settings affect capability and reliability
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 options, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. Recommended ingest bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Check the current table for your exact combination instead of treating one bitrate as universal.

YouTube also recommends testing the stream and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips advise running an upload speed test and leaving headroom above the stream bitrate; 20% is the stated recommendation. A network disruption can interrupt a live stream, so an inexpensive VM or efficient mini PC does not by itself make the connection reliable.

- Capability: Check that the chosen VM or mini PC can sustain your codec, resolution and frame rate. Do not infer encoding capacity from price or processor category alone.
- Power and connection: A mini PC uses local electricity and depends on the local network and upload connection. A cloud VM avoids relying on the home computer’s power, but still depends on a suitable cloud configuration and network path to YouTube.
- Reliability and upkeep: Account for monitoring, restarts, software updates and recovery. These are operational considerations, not benefits that can be assigned a universal numeric value.
- Scope: Make clear whether your totals include disk, egress, computer purchase, internet, and any other resources. A comparison that omits different costs on each side is not an all-in comparison.
