It can cost US$0 per month in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) charges after trial credits expire—but only if the stream host and every other resource stay within Always Free eligibility and limits. Paid resources created using trial credits do not automatically become free: Oracle says they are reclaimed unless you upgrade the account. A 24/7 stream’s outbound data also counts against OCI’s monthly allowance, as do other workloads in the tenancy.
When can the cost be US$0?
Oracle’s documented Always Free resources can continue after the trial ends, so an eligible instance running entirely within those resources can have no OCI compute charge. That is a conditional estimate, not a guarantee that an existing trial setup will keep running unchanged. Check the instance shape, region, storage, and other resources against the current Oracle Cloud Free Tier terms before the trial ends.
This figure covers OCI service charges only. It excludes YouTube-side costs, any local production equipment, and the operator’s or viewers’ internet service. The exact all-in cost depends on the stream architecture, media storage, account configuration, and whether any resource exceeds Always Free limits.
What changes when the trial credits expire?
Oracle documents US$300 in trial credits, valid for up to 30 days. Always Free resources can remain available after the trial, but paid resources provisioned with trial credits are reclaimed unless the account is upgraded. Oracle describes a 30-day grace period for paid resources; during that period, new paid resources cannot be created unless the account is upgraded. Before the trial ends, verify in the OCI Console that the host and related resources fit the Always Free allowance. Oracle says free accounts remain active when used within the past 60 days. Its guidance also says excess Always Free Ampere A1 capacity must be reduced before trial end to continue as an Always Free user; excess instances may be disabled and later deleted. Do not assume that trial-funded compute will simply convert to a free instance.
How much outbound data will a 24/7 stream use?
Oracle documents 10 TB per month of Always Free outbound data transfer. A continuous stream sends data out of the OCI tenancy to YouTube, so estimate its usage from the actual outgoing bitrate and add other tenancy traffic.

For scale, a steady 6 Mbps stream sent for 30 days uses about 1.94 decimal TB: 6,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8. This is arithmetic based on an example bitrate, before protocol overhead or other traffic. It is not a YouTube bitrate recommendation or a measured result. Oracle’s allowance and resource limits are described in its Always Free Resources documentation.
Which Always Free compute can host it?
Oracle’s documented Always Free Ampere A1 allocation is 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory total, split across one or two A1 instances. Always Free compute instances must be created in the tenancy’s home region. Oracle also lists up to two AMD E2.1.Micro instances, which are much smaller. These entitlements do not establish that a particular source format, encoder, or workload will perform successfully; test the actual relay or encoding setup rather than assuming either shape is adequate.

There is also an operational caveat: Oracle may reclaim idle Always Free compute if CPU and network utilization—and, for A1, memory utilization—remain below stated thresholds over a seven-day period. A continuously running stream may generate activity, but intended use alone is not a guarantee against reclamation. Check the current instance status and tenancy limits in the OCI Console. Oracle’s idle-resource policy explains the conditions.
Will storing recordings add a cost?
A relay that reads a source and forwards it live may not need to store recordings in OCI. If you keep video files or other media in Object Storage, Oracle documents a post-trial Always Free allowance of 20 GB combined across Standard, Infrequent Access, and Archive tiers, plus 50,000 API requests per month. Storage above the allowance can change the cost estimate, and Oracle warns that objects may be deleted if usage exceeds the post-trial limit at expiry. Review the Always Free resource limits and remove or move files that would exceed the cap before the trial ends.

How to check whether your setup will stay free
- Inventory your resources in the OCI Console. Identify the compute instance, region, attached storage, Object Storage use, and any other trial-funded services the stream depends on.
- Check compute eligibility. Confirm the host uses an Always Free shape in the home region and that total A1 allocation does not exceed 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory. If trial-funded paid compute is in use, plan a rebuild or resize to an eligible shape rather than assuming it will convert.
- Estimate tenancy-wide egress. Multiply the actual outgoing bitrate by the seconds streamed, divide by eight to convert bits to bytes, and account for protocol overhead and other outbound traffic. Compare the result with Oracle’s 10 TB monthly allowance.
- Check storage before expiry. Keep Object Storage within the combined 20 GB allowance and consider the 50,000 monthly API-request limit. Move or delete files above the post-trial allowance.
- Review the expiry and idle policies. Upgrade if you need paid resources to remain available, reduce excess A1 allocation before trial end, and check instance status regularly. Do not budget on uninterrupted operation or exemption from idle-resource reclamation.
What can make the actual cost higher than zero?
- A compute instance, storage allocation, or other resource outside Always Free limits.
- A trial-funded paid resource that must be retained by upgrading rather than replaced with eligible Always Free resources.
- Outbound traffic beyond the included allowance or other paid services attached to the setup.
- Media storage beyond the post-trial Object Storage allowance.
Oracle’s published limits establish the conditional zero-charge case, but not the price of a paid alternative configuration. To compare OCI with a paid VM or a local host, use the actual workload’s CPU and memory needs, software architecture compatibility, included and excess outbound transfer, storage and retention, region availability, and reliability requirements. A precise paid monthly total cannot be calculated without those details.
