A home PC’s cost depends on its measured power draw and your electricity rate: calculate it as average watts ÷ 1,000 × 720 hours × your price per kWh for a 30-day month. Neither option is automatically free of setup, reliability, or account-limit trade-offs.

This compares operating costs, not the cost of buying a computer or the value of your time. There is no single honest home-PC price without the machine’s measured draw and your local electricity tariff.
When Oracle Cloud can be free
Oracle’s detailed Always Free documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists the first 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB-hours each month for VM.Standard.A1.Flex instances. For an Always Free tenancy, Oracle says that is equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. The free compute must be created in the tenancy’s home region. See Oracle’s Always Free Resources documentation for the current limits and conditions.
Oracle’s price list, also accessed October 3, 2026, lists the first 10 TB per month of outbound internet data transfer as free across its listed regional groupings. In a typical cloud-encoder setup, the VM sends one stream to YouTube, so this is outbound traffic. A single conventional 720p or 1080p feed at the example bitrates below is within that listed data-transfer allowance. Check the Oracle Cloud Price List and your account’s usage before relying on a $0 bill.

Free does not mean every configuration is free
- Only eligible resources within the applicable Always Free allowances qualify. Additional VMs, multiple output feeds, other workloads, storage beyond free limits, paid images, or resources outside the allowance can change the bill.
- Oracle documents the Always Free services as available for the life of the account, subject to limits. Its separate free-trial offer includes US$300 in credits for up to 30 days; those trial credits are not the same as Always Free resources. See Oracle Cloud Free Tier for the distinction.
- Oracle says free capacity may not be available when you try to provision a VM. An “out of host capacity” error means the requested free shape is temporarily unavailable in the home region; it does not mean a different region will qualify for the home-region Always Free compute allowance.
- Oracle’s documentation describes reclamation criteria for idle Always Free compute. For an A1 instance, the stated seven-day criteria include CPU utilization at the 95th percentile below 20%, network utilization below 20%, and memory utilization below 20%. Check the current documentation and monitor your instance rather than assuming that a provisioned VM is guaranteed to remain indefinitely.
The detailed Oracle limits and account console are the practical references for your tenancy; a general free-tier page alone does not establish that a particular VM and all related resources will cost nothing.
Estimate the stream’s monthly data transfer
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance lists recommended bitrates of 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. For one continuous feed over a 30-day month, the corresponding outbound volumes are approximately 2.59 TB, 4.54 TB, and 5.51 TB in decimal units. These are calculated values, not figures published by YouTube: bitrate × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8, then decimal unit conversion.

These estimates cover the single encoded feed sent from the encoder to YouTube, before protocol overhead. They do not measure the data YouTube sends onward to viewers. Your total OCI outbound traffic can also include other workloads or simultaneous feeds. YouTube’s bitrate, codec, and RTMPS guidance is in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Calculate a home PC’s electricity cost
Use the PC’s average wall power while it is doing the work, not its advertised power supply rating or idle draw. For a 30-day month:

Monthly electricity cost = (average watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × 30 × your local price per kWh.
For illustration, a PC averaging 50 W uses 36 kWh over 720 hours; one averaging 100 W uses 72 kWh. Multiply the appropriate kWh figure by your actual all-in electricity price. These wattages are examples, not measurements of a particular computer.

- Plug the computer into a wall power meter, or use another reliable method to measure its average draw at the wall.
- Measure during the actual streaming workload, including encoding if the PC encodes the video. Let the reading settle over a representative period; a short idle reading may not reflect the full-day average.
- Apply the formula using the measured watts and the electricity rate on your bill. For a different billing period, substitute its actual hours for 720.
If you would need to buy a PC specifically for the stream, add that purchase and any replacement costs separately. The calculation above is only the electricity used by an already-owned computer.

The cost calculation does not capture the practical difference between a home encoder and a cloud VM. A PC at home relies on your local electricity, internet connection, and the machine remaining available. A cloud VM moves the encoder off the home computer, but it still needs a working route to YouTube and can be affected by regional capacity, configuration, account limits, and platform interruptions.

YouTube says the total outgoing bitrate must fit within your upload capacity and recommends 20% headroom. For example, a 17 Mbps stream calls for more than 17 Mbps of stable upload capacity; allowing the recommended headroom means planning for roughly 21.25 Mbps or more for that feed, with additional room for other outgoing traffic. A speed-test peak alone does not establish that a connection will sustain the stream continuously. See YouTube’s streaming tips for its guidance.
Choose between the DIY options by weighing the actual OCI quota and capacity available to your account, measured PC watts and local tariff, the stable upload bandwidth at your selected bitrate, and how much you want the stream to depend on home power and internet. This is a cost and configuration comparison, not a hands-on test of either setup.
